4. Sam Worley became the first high school outdoor miler in 2017 to get within an earshot of beating the 4-minute barrier at the Texas Relays
New Braunfels Canyon (Tx.) senior and University of Texas signee Sam Worley was on a mission at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday.
The senior distance runner, who ran 4:04.59 in the 1600m at the UIL Texas Championships a year ago, brought down the hammer in the final 400 meters of the Jerry Thompson mile field, out kicking a group that included Olympian Leo Manzano, noted college athletes and fellow standout high school runner Reed Brown.
Worley finished in 4:00.61, which was the 15th best effort recorded all-time. Worley was the 11th fastest runner to record a time in boys mile history.
He as in eighth at the start of the bell lap.
In the fall, Worley was a top 10 finisher at Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals and was second overall at NXN. A year ago, he ran 8:51.44 in the 3200m at the state championships
