2017: Texas Distance Festival Preview

Boys Elite 5K

Event Info: Saturday, 9:35 p.m.
State of the action: The premier event of the night starts in primetime. Who will win? It's anyones guess. While St. Joseph Notre Dame's Cooper Teare, a Stanford signee, has the race's best seed time at 14:38, Southlake Carroll's Reed Brown, an Oregon recruit, has finished second in this race in back-to-back years. El Paso Eastwood's Daniel Bernal, a Furman signee, could very make a big statement. Don't forget abotu Luis Grijalva of Armijo in California. He could be a surprise pick to win. Carlisle's Noah Affolder, a Syracuse recruit with 2-mile speed in his legs, might be the most ready to win on Saturday. Don't forget about Connor Lane (Stanford recruit), Alex Maier, Seth Hirsch (Wisconsin recruit) or Dan Viegra (Wake Forest recruit). Any of these runners could win. It will depend on how this race plays out. Will anyone go out for the impossible: a sub-14 time? That seems unlikely. But if the pace starts to jump, expect the meet record -- 14:41 -- to be broken. Either way, this will be one of the best races to watch from wire-to-wire all year.
