Which State Produced The Most Track & Field Olympians For Team USA?

Phyllis Francis, Allyson Felix and Natasha Hastings will represent Team USA in the 400m at the Olympic Games. The above photo depicts all three in high school; the below photo was taken at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Team USA is represented by 128 track and field athletes at the Olympic Games in Rio, starting this Friday, August 12. Where did these track stars get their start? We investigated the hometowns, high schools and colleges for each member of the USATF delegation.

California tops the state-based list with 16 natives on the Team USA roster. Texas is runner-up with 10 Olympians; New Jersey and New York tie for third with nine qualifiers each. Florida produced seven Olympians in 2016 and Missouri boasts six. 16 states do not have a native Olympian to cheer for this year: Alabama, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

If an athlete was born in another country but attended high school in the United States, they are listed twice in the list below.

Note: Many U.S. based track and field stars will compete in Rio for other countries. The list below includes only those athletes who will compete for the United States.
