Big Mile Races Out West

  • Brea Olinda, California, senior Austin Tamagno ran U.S. No. 2, 3:44.14, in the 1500m on Friday night at the Hoka One One Middle Distance Classic. He placed fifth in his section against a field of pros. Hassan Mead ran the fastest time of the night in 3:37.65. Tamagno, an Oregon recruit, opted to skip the California state postseason to focus on running at national-level meets. He will race the international mile next weekend at the Pre Classic in Eugene, Oregon, where he hopes to break the four-minute barrier. This season, Tamagno ran 4:03.21--the nation's No. 2 outdoor mile--behind Michael Slagowski's 3:59.53.

  • NXN champion and Arcadia 3200m champion Casey Clinger broke the all-time Utah state record in the 1600m with a time of 4:07.52 at altitude at the Utah State Championship.
