National Weekend Rundown for November 21

CIF Southern Section Finals (CA)

Austin Tamagno runs 14:50--nineteen seconds faster than at this meet last year--for the D3 boys win. Brea won its third straight team title with 63 points, while this was Tamagno's second straight individual win.

Great Oak swept the boys and girls team titles in the Division 1 races, putting them on the path to defend their state titles at next week's CIF meet.

Impressively, the #2 Great Oak girls won despite top runner Destiny Collins suffering from shin splints and finishing back in the pack.  Led by Evelyn Mandel, the Wolfpack girls won 37-161 over Vista Murrieta. Freshman Chloe Arriaga of Walnut won the individual race in 17:40. In the D2 girls race, #17 Saugus survived an upset bid from unranked Serrano, winning 79-83. Bubble Amanda Gehrich of Tesoro ran 17:24 for the D2 win and the fastest time of the day.

In the D1 boys race, the top-ranked Great Oak boys beat out US #6 Dana Hills in a relatively tight 47-70 battle. Second-ranked Phillip Rocha of Arcadia edged out Great Oak's #19 Spencer Dodds 14:42.7 to 14:44.9, the two fastest times of the day on the famous Mt. SAC course.
