In our latest Brooks PR Match-Up, we breakdown the PR's and head to head outcomes between two of the best middle distance runners from the state of Texas in junior Aaliyah Miller from McKinney Boyd and sophomore Julia Heymach from Houston Lamar.
Miller started out high school as a 400 meter specialist, before finding the 800 as an equally strong event for her along with excelling in longer distance events such as the 1600 (4:50) and running cross country in the fall (18:18 5K PR).
Miller has won 4 Texas state titles including 2 wins in the 800 and one in the 400. At the TTFCA Meet of Champions in late May, Miller recorded the nation's third fastest time in the 800 with a personal best effort of 2:05.94 in less than ideal and stormy weather conditions.
Meanwhile, Heymach was more of a long distance geared runner as a freshmen when she was a state runner-up in cross country and ran 10:46 for 3200 meters last spring. She has shown an incredible improvement in leg turnover in year two of high school as evident earlier this outdoor season at the Victor Lopez Classic when she doubled with a 4:23 1500 and 2:07 800 in the same meet with limited rest.
Heymach has not raced at 800 meters since that early April meet, so will be interesting how much improved she can be in over 2 and half months time at the distance. An All-American in cross country and indoor track, Heymach looks to solidify herself again as one of the nation's best in the outdoor season. She could have just as easily jumped in the mile and two mile races at Brooks PR as well with her season best times of 4:40 (a Texas state record) in the 1600 and 10:14 in the 3200.
One may have ran faster than the other in the same meet, but in separate races or divisions in the past. The head to head race is coming at Brooks PR between Miller vs. Heymach in the 800 meter run.
