In Her Own Words: Alexa Cruz - One Last Hurrah

Hey Flrunners! It's been a little since you heard from me, but obviously a lot has happened since then (aka States). I hope everyone was able to reach their goals and run some great times! Let me give you all a recap on the meet and catch you up on what's going on now.

States was a very "cool" meet (pun intended) to say the least. Us Floridians got a taste of what it's like to run with frost on the ground and cold in the air. Though it was cold, the weather was beautiful and quite a change from south Florida's usual humidity and heat. With the senior speeches from the night before still on our minds, the girls and I warmed up and got mentally ready for what lay ahead. With spikes in hand and sweats still on, we headed to the start line. Excitement and anticipation was all that could be felt on the line. Team chants were roaring and silent prayers were being said.

In those silent seconds before the gun went off, I looked to my left and right, confident that my teammates had my back. In the blink of an eye, the race started. I got out and made sure not to get boxed in. So many things were going through my mind, but I made sure to keep my composure. I ended up finishing third, which was not what I wanted, but you learn something from each race. Though I was disappointed with my performance, I didn't let it bring me down. My team and I placed 2nd place and I couldn't be more proud! We gave it our all, overcame so many obstacles and injuries this season, and ran our hearts out. A special congratulations to Rafaella Gibbons, Sinclaire Johnson, Kayley Delay, and all the other girls who competed in the race. Another congratulations to my teammate Meg Schloss for placing fifth! #chompchomp Our boys' team also did a great job! They placed third and a few of them PR'd. Congrats to Bryce Statham for placing sixth and for representing the Raiders so well!

While States is very fun, it also means that cross country is coming to an end and it's the last meet for the seniors (tears). Thank you Alec, Brianna, Bryce, Jonah, Julianna, Meg, and Michelle for such a wonderful and memorable three seasons! But, now that the season was done, what did a few of us decide to do...why keep training for Footlocker of course! Like many other runners, I'm doing the meet because I hope to PR. I'm excited and can't wait to run in such a competitive race. A final congratulations to all the runners who competed at States and anyone who ran this year. Good luck to anyone running any post season meets. Hopefully I can blog about a PR next week (fingers crossed)!

Until next time, happy running!
