9/6 High School XC Weekend Recap

Hamilton County Invitational (IN)

September 02, 2014 White River Elementary School in Noblesville, IN

The Hamilton County Invitational on Tuesday was a good indicator of where the nationally ranked Carmel boys and girls are at this point of the season.

The Carmel girls went to work early this week at the Hamilton County Invitational rolling up a low score of 19 points including a top 3 sweep from their top runners Haley Harris (1st, 18:18), Kelsey Harris (2nd, 18:23), and Stacy Morozov (3rd, 18:23). With the graduation of several key runners from their 2013 Nike Cross Nationals 4th place squad, the question was how they would fill those varsity spots. That questions seems to have been answered at the Hamilton County Invite with senior Anna Schmitz (5th, 18:45) and freshmen Madelyn Dalton (9th, 19:09) running well to round out their top five. The US preseason #9 ranked Carmel girls averaged a swift 18:35 team average.

The US #16 ranked Carmel boys were just as impressive in their team performance on Tuesday with 5 of the top 9 finishers individually in the race led by junior Ben Veatch running away with the race in a time of 15:39 from the 9:05 3200 runner and top 30 finisher from 2013 Nike Cross Nationals. This team is in position to not only do great things year, but next year as well with only one senior among their top 5 with sophomore Zac Leinheiser (2nd, 16:07), junior Tedd Browning (4th, 16:11), senior Grayson Jenkins (5th, 16:11), and sophomore Thomas Revard (9th, 16:24). Jenkins is a 9:33 3200/15:23 3 mile transfer from Neuqua Valley High School in Illinois, who will only boost Carmel's rise up the national rankings.
