Another Piece to Brooks PR Puzzle: Audrey Belf (MI)

Another piece to the Brooks PR puzzle is Birmingham Seaholm High School (MI) distance runner Audrey Belf. The four-time Michigan state champion and sub 17 minute 5k runner, the junior Belf will bring her US #16 10:16 3200 PR to the 2014 Brooks PR Invitational on Saturday, June 21st in Seattle. Belf has already run under 10:20 three times this spring in her homestate of Michigan and is hoping the trip to the Northwest in two weeks will be the PR race opportunity for her to venture under 10:10 for the first time. When did you first learn that you were invited to the Brooks PR Invite and how did your react?

Belf: I first learned that I was invited when I awakened for my morning run. Before I left, I decided to check my phone and there was a message from my coach telling me about my invitation. I was elated! After receiving the news, I must admit that morning run was one of my best ever.

What does it mean to you to be invited to the Brooks PR Invitational?

Belf: It is such an honor. Ever since my freshman year I have been watching the Brooks PR. Witnessing some of the top runners in the nation, such as Erin Finn, excel and be pushed to amazing times is truly inspirational. Last year, I made a goal to be a part of the meet in 2014. Achieving this goal is one of my biggest accomplishments.

What do you hope to achieve at the meet?

Belf: I have my mind set on breaking the elusive ten minute barrier. With such great competition at this meet, I believe many girls will accomplish this feat.

What music do you listen to before races?

Belf: As crazy as it sounds, I enjoy listening to John Mayer on the way to races.

If you were stranded on an island with three things what would they be?

Belf: Pink running shoes, my dog Petey, and a lifetime supply of Cocoa Krispies cereal.

What would you consider as your best or most favorite race of all-time and why?

Belf: I would have to say racing at the 2013 New Balance Indoor Nationals in the 2-mile taking 3rd place. Although this race does not mark my all time PR, it was the first time I competed at a national level. I convinced myself that I can accomplish any goal I set; the possibilities are endless.

What are some things un-running related people might not know about you?

Belf: Many people do not know that I absolutely love to cook. I enjoy making all types of dishes, especially pastas.

How and why did you get involved in the sport?

Belf: I started running in middle school as a sprinter. In 8th grade, I began focusing on distance but did not become serious about running until high school. Before running, I competed in swimming and soccer. I had always been one of the fastest kids on the soccer field. When our middle school started a cross country team, I truly began to show my potential as a distance runner. It wasn’t until I started high school that I really decided to run. After I made the decision to commit entirely to running, I have never looked back or regretted my choice.

How has your training been leading up to the meet?

Belf: My training has been fantastic. I am doing a lot of long runs with some short intervals mixed in periodically. Along with running, I continue cross training in the pool and strength work.

What are you most looking forward about your trip, race and weekend at the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle?

Belf: I am looking forward to meeting a lot of new girls who share my passion for running. It is so cool being able to develop a nationwide circle of friends. I am also excited to push myself to achieve a new PR.
