Wesley Frazier pulled off a stunning comeback in the 5000, netting herself a national record and the highlight of the season.

When Erin Finn, the national record holder in the indoor 500, came off the final turn and headed for the finish line, nobody expected her to lose the race. That's because Wesley Frazier, the second-place runner at that point, was still about 15 meters behind, rounding the banked curve of the Armory's 200 meter track. Then this happened:
Frazier not only stole the race, she also took Finn's national record with her time of 16:18.01. You can see that the full impact of the moment was still hitting her during her post-race interview. It was a family affair, too, as Ryen Frazier ran 17:36.28, moving her into #2 all-time indoors for this state, right behind her sister. Wesley followed her stunning performance by winning the two mile in 10:12.23, which improved her all-time North Carolina record in that event.
Though Frazier's performance may have been the brightest highlight of the weekend, it was certainly not the only tremendous performance by a North Carolina athlete. Tyra Lea (Wakefield) broke the all-time state record in the 200, running 24.00 in the prelims before sitting out the final to conserve her energy for the 4x400. The Wakefield girls continued to perform well on the national stage, finishing second in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Likewise, a Knightdale boys team that some people might have expected to be a bit down this year (after graduation losses the last two years) showed that they haven't gone anywhere, finishing 2nd in both the 4x200 and 4x400. All told, in addition to the three state records, there were 5 performances that rank second in North Carolina history:
- Ryen Frazier's 17:36.28 in the 5000
- Bakri Abushouk (Cary) ran 9:03.53 in the two-mile
- Knightdale's boys posted a 1:28.86 in the 4x200
- Mohogany Baker (Philip O. Berry/Higher Power Athletic Club) threw the 20-pound weight 52' 2"
- Layla White (Cary) ran 54.56 in the 400
