Team Virginia truly showed out this weekend and proved once again that those from the Commonwealth of Virginia are truly the kings and queens of 400s. Representing Virginia were 16 athletes in 19 entered events these past few weeks at the USATF Olympic Team Trials. Out of those 16 athletes, 25% or four of the athletes have advanced to make the Olympic team for the United States.

Against the toughest competition in the world, recent T.C. Williams alum, Noah Lyles raced his best when it mattered most. Though he finished just shy of making the US Olympic team in fourth place, he did cross the line in a wind-legal 20.09 to break Roy Martin's 31 year old 200m national record.

Justin Gatlin Out-Leans LaShawn Merritt For 200m Olympic Trials Victory Dennis Young Jul 9, 2016

In a dramatic lean at the finish line, Justin Gatlin won the 200m final in the second fastest time in the world this year Saturday at Hayward Field. Out of lane eight, Gatlin beat world leader LaShawn Merritt with a winning time of 19.75 seconds. After winning the 400m title earlier in the week, Merritt finished second in 19.79 and was followed by Ameer Webb who closed for third in 20.00.

Tori Bowie and Marvin Bracy are two of the top young sprinters in the USA at ages 25 and 22. This weekend the duo will continue their road to Rio and the 2016 Olympic Games. Bowie has the second fastest seed times in both the 100 (10.80) and 200m dash (21.99) while Bracy's 9.94 is third best behind only Trayvon Bromell and Justin Gatlin. Pure Athletics (Adidas) coach Gary Evans gave us the low down on their workouts for the week before the Olympic Trials which included block work and fine tuning their top end speed.

The road to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for Team USA starts Friday at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Olympic Trials will feature over three dozen athletes who went to high school in the Sunshine State and dozens more with ties to Florida whether it be attending college or training here at the professional ranks.  Here is a look at those who spent their high school years in Florida and will be looking to dawn the red,white, and blue come August.
