Region B Championships Highlights
A total of 7 meet records were set at Thursday's Region B Outdoor Track & Field Championships at East Rockingham High School including a pair set by both Amelia County's Jasmine Mitchell and Strasburg's Katlyn Ayers. Mitchell scored 47 points total among 6 events including meet record performances in the high jump with a 5'4.50" clearance and a 56.49 clocking in the 400 meter dash. Mitchell also won the long jump with a leap of 18'4" and finished as a runner-up in the 100 meter dash and 800 meter run. It took a meet record run from Strasburg's Katlyn Ayers to keep Mitchell from fourth individual title on the day. Ayers earlier battled in the 1600 meter run with this fall's Group A state cross country champion Hannah Rose of Wilson Memorial and received some redemption from her state cross country meet loss with a meet record victory of 5:08.88. Ayers again faced major competition later in the 800 from Amelia County's Mitchell and came out in first place again breaking a 14 year old meet record with a time of 2:19.20. Strasburg made a clean sweep of the team titles for boys and girls with Ayers and thrower Taylor Cockerille (discus winner and shot runner-up) leading the girls to a team score of 81 points. Strasburg boys (52 pts) squeezed out a one point win over Stonewall Jackson (51 pts) as a sweep of the distance races and the 30 points from those wins by Anthony Wallis in the 1600 (4:33.72) and 3200 (10:07.39) in addition to Strasburg teammate Dylan Callaway running away with gold in the 800 meter run by a resounding four seconds with his time of 1:59.78. The boys 200 meter dash was the fastest race ever in meet history with two runners breaking the old meet record and the third place finishing tying the old all-time meet best of 22.00. In any other year, Dan River sophomore Antwane Ferrell would be the regional champion with his 22.00 clocking but had to settle for third behind Altavista's Justin Brown rolling a swift 21.62 performance for the title and followed by Nelson County's Rodrell Smith (2nd, 21.95) for runner-up. Brown also took first in the 100 meter dash earlier with a 10.82 clocking, while Ferrell ran a leg on a meet record shattering 4x100 meter relay for Dan River at 43.04. Both 4x100 records went down as the Gretna girls lowered the time set by Appomattox County one year ago down to 50.49. Chatham's Tori McKenzie was a double champion in the sprints with times of 12.24 and 25.64 respectively in the 100 and 200 meter dash. McKenzie is the reigning Group A state champion in both events and looking to match or better her performance from a year ago when she ran personal best times of 11.96 and 24.99 in state competition. William Campbell boys have some talented jumpers as showcased by the 6'7" clearance from Maxie Crews in the high jump and a leap of 45'11" by Marques Adams in the triple jump. Region II Championships Highlights
The Loudoun County boys (84 pts) and John Handley girls (56 pts) were team champions at the Region II Meet on Wednesday at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg. Steven Graham in the sprints and Patrick Joseph in the distance races led the Loudoun County boys with Graham winning individual titles in the 100 (11.00), 400 (48.28), and 200 (22.89), while Joseph doubled with victories in the 1600 (4:15.82) and 800 (1:54.98). After never breaking 40 seconds before in the 300 meter hurdles, Loudoun County senior Teddy Murphy not only broke 40 at the Region II Meet but made a run after a 38 second flat time with a state best FAT performance of 38.44. Murphy was also runner-up in the 100 meter hurdles as he traded wins with Heritage's Marcus Finney in the two hurdle races. Verna Hilaire-Lee and Britani Myers helped the John Handley girls hold off the Louisa County girls and impressive meet from Louisa's Javanique Burruss. Burruss notched 3 regional titles between the long jump and triple jump with marks of 18'11.75" and 37'5" clocking along with a swift 14.73 clocking in the 100 meter hurdles. Verna Hilaire-Lee and Myers teamed up together for the first place 4x100 meter relay from John Handley, while Hilaire ruled the sprints with the fastest times in the 100 (12.18) and 200 (25.09), while the 500 indoor state champ Myers won a competitive 400 meter dash in 57.27. Another strong individual performance from Handley girls came from sophomore Lisa Meneau posting a performance of 44.04 in a 300 meter hurdles victory. Millbrook's Crystal Nelson, a likely favorite in the Group AA state meet at 3200 meters, tuned up for next weekend with a 1600 and 800 double at the regional meet. She won the 1600 in 5:03 and came back to run a personal best time of 2:15.30 to finish second in a great battle with Woodgrove's Audrey Houghton (2:15.04). Fauquier's Grant Holmes and Fluvanna's Chance Parmly will be duking it out again at Harrisonburg next Saturday for the state title in the pole vault. Parmly is the returning state champ, but Holmes right now is the top performer including a recent 14'6" clearance over Parmly at the regional meet. The Liberty Christian boys were upset by Woodberry Forest in the 4x400 at meet's end, but had the top two finishers in the 400 dash finals earlier with great times from William Miller (48.49) and Duane Cargill (49.39). Trinity boys swept the top 3 places in the 3200 and were led by senior Guy Shelby clocking in at 9:27 for the 8 lap event. Madden wins Southerrn Track 2 mile at UVA with sub 9 clocking, Nelson takes girls race in 10:39
Skyline junior Thomas Madden continued his torrid pace in his races so far this outdoor season in winning a loaded Southern Track Classic high school 2 mile field assembled at the University of Virginia on Saturday night. The recent Penn Relays 3K champ Madden clocked his first sub 9 minute performance of 8:59.62 at the full 2 miles distance to edge out UVA recruit Michael Marsella (9:00.90) from Chario High School in Rhode Island and broke away from the rest of the Virginians including local favorite Adam Visokay (3rd, 9:05.07) from Albemarle. A total of 9 runners went 9:17 or faster in the boys' race. It was a Group AA sweep as far as the race champions with Millbrook senior Crystal Nelson running a lifetime best time of 10:39.97 to lead five others under 11 minutes in a smaller girls' field. Nelson had tuned up for the big 2 mile in Charlottesville with two personal bests at 1600 (4:55) and 800 (2:18) meters two weeks ago at the Apple Blossom Invite. Two sophomores trailed Nelson in between West Springfield's Caroline Alcorta (2nd, 10:41.34) and Ocean Lakes' Nicole Park (3rd, 10:45.25). Wilson Memorial junior Hannah Rose ran one of the fastest times ever by a Group A runner with her fifth place finish of 10:54.43. HS Boys 2 Mile Results HS Girls 2 Mile Results -

Group AAA virtual meet rankings including top 8 in each event and team scores based on performances in the MileStat.com database as of May 10th. A slew of boys' teams are in the hunt as the current #1 ranked squad being the Ahmed Bile-led Annandale squad with 39 points, while the same two schools from the indoor state championships in Cosby and Western Branch are the top two teams in contention for the girls' team title. For Western Branch girls to regain their perch as state track champions over the indoor champs from Cosby, they will need some of their top individuals come through including Tiffany Ellick, who had a big day in the triple jump at the Penn Relays two weeks ago with a third place PR mark of 39'9.25" to become the leading perfomer in Group AAA.

Narrow margins separate the top teams in Group A currently with a one point edge for the Stonewall Jackson boys over George Wythe as well as for the James River girls over Strasburg. Strasburg has two individuals who could rack up a lot of points by themselves in state competition between distance runner Katlyn Ayers and thrower Taylor Cockerille. The Christopher Newport University recruit Cockerille launched a personal best mark of 128'8" in the discus at the Falcon Track Classic last Friday night.

No Entry Fee for Saturday's MileStat.com Sub-Varsity Invite
This weekend's MileStat.com Sub-Varsity Invitational will now have no entry fee at all to hopefully entice more teams to enter and bring athletes to the meet this Saturday at Dinwiddie High School. We really want to see this meet grow and exist as we think it is a great idea and opportunity for your athletes whose seasons would normally end before the district meet at a ho-hum smaller weekday meet to have a higher quality meet to end their season on a high note with a season best performance and hopefully get a medal as well. We think its important to the growth of track & field in our area's high school programs to keep our younger and developing kids motivated and excited about their future in the sport. This meet is only for athletes who will not be selected by their coaches to compete in the upcoming district and conference championship meets (does not apply to exceptional 9th and 8th graders). The entry deadline has been extended to 8 PM on Thursday. Below you can find meet information and link to enter online. MileStat.com Sub-Varsity Invite - Meet Page & Online Registration -

Virginians @ Penn Relays (Saturday Highlights)
Photo by Don Rich From MileSplit US summary: Westfield (VA) went into the COA 4x800 as the favorite, but nothing is certain on Saturday. Kingston College, St. Jago and Holmwood dominated the first two legs of the relay while being stalked by Cherokee (NJ). During the end of the second leg the pack bunched up with Cherokee taking the lead for the first time. Westfield had moved into 5th at this point but there was still a gap to overcome. Entering the third leg Kingston led with Cherokee closely behind. St. Jago, Chariho (RI) and Holmwood were strung out with Westfield sitting in 6th place. During the first lap of leg 3 Westfield caught back up with the pack, led by Cherokee. Westfield's Nathan Kiley went from 5th to a big first as he closed out his leg before handing off to Tyrone Walker. Kingston College captured the lead again with 500 to go and Walker settled in. With 270 meters to go Walker launched into his kick and took the lead. Kingston College anchor Sanj Powell gave it one final effort with 100 to go but the teams crossed the line with Westfield winning in 7:39.73 with Kingston College clocked at 7:40.52. Splits for Westfield went as followed in the Championships of America finals at the Penn Relays: Max Chambers (1:57.6), Jeff Edmondson (1:56.4), Nathan Kiley (1:51.3), Tyrone Walker (1:54.4). Westfield's performance ranks them #3 all-time in Virginia high school history behind only the national record holders from the 2009 Albemarle squad, who also won at the Penn Relays in 7:30.67 as well as the 2001 South Lakes squad featuring high school mile national record holder Alan Webb at 7:35.33. Video Interview with w/ Westfield Boys 4x800 The state of Virginia also had a winner in the boys' triple jump on Saturday. A 50 foot winner that is. Lakeland senior Anaquan Peterson, an already accomplished triple jumper as a state champion and All-American, finally got that elusive mark which he had been reaching for and he achieved on one of the biggest stages. Peterson propelled himself to 50 foot mark exactly on a wind-aided attempt to win the Penn Relays high school triple jump competition by over a foot. Video Interview w/ Anaquan Peterson In the large school 4x100 finals, Western Branch boys clocked a time of 42.80 for 4th place, while Annandale posted a time of 42.40 but were disqualified in the event.. They were the only two Virginia boys' relay team to advance onto any finals in the sprint relays (4x100 or 4x400) at the 2012 Penn Relays as Western Branch and Annandale were also the fastest VA squad in the 4x400 trials at 3:22.22 for Western Branch (28th overall) and 3:23.30 for Annandale (36th).

Virginians @ Penn Relays (Friday Highlights)
Westfield boys were the fastest qualifiers of all teams in the 4x800 trials with a state best time of 7:48.39 from the indoor AAA state 4x800 relay squad and now insert themselves as a far in the Championships of American finals on Saturday. Splits for Westfield were as followed: Max Chambers (1:59.5), Jeff Edmondson (1:57.8), Nathan Kiley (1:54.8), Tyrone Walker (1:56.3). Another Northern Region relay in Annandale clocked the swiftest time among all Virginians in the 4x100 heats at 42.48 for 11th fastest overall to qualify for the large school finals tomorrow. Another Atom from Annandale in Ahmed Bile was part of a contigent of four Virginians in the Penn Relays high school mile and ended up fifth overall with a season best performance of 4:12.81. Best race of the day from Virginia and a big surprise came from Skyline's Thomas Madden scoring his biggest win so far of his high school career as the Group AA state cross country champion won the 3000 meter title at the Penn Relays in a resounding 5 second victory at 8:25.54. The Skyline junior Madden, who boasts a 3200 meter PR of 9:14, would have chopped off roughly 12 seconds and threatened a 9 minute flat time if he had continued on for another 200 meters. Albemarle's Adam Viskokay, who was a national runner-up indoors in the 2 mile, placed fifth in 8:34, while the state had five of the top 11 finishers with Madden, Visokay, W.T. Woodson's Paul Gates, Lake Braddock's Nick Tuck, and Princess Anne's Matthew Schwartzer. -

Revised Time Schedule for MileStat.com Track Classic
Revised time schedule for this weekend's MileStat.com Elite Track Classic at Sports Backers Stadium based on meet entries for the 2012 event. Note that the meet will still operate on a rolling schedule and go ahead if possible. This posted schedule is only to be used as a general guideline for athletes and coaches, who must be aware of how the meet is progressing along with events and arrive early enough to the facility in case the meet runs ahead of schedule. Aiming for a 9:10 PM finish on Friday and 6:50 PM on Saturday. -
MileStat.com Elite Track Classic Accepted Entries & Heat Sheets
Within 3 hours of the midnight entry deadline on Monday, an accepted list of entries as well as current heat sheets are now available online for the fourth annual MileStat.com Elite Track Classic. Keep in mind with the heat sheets that we will be redrawing heats on meet day after athletes (or coaches on their behalf) check-in or scratch from their running events approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. We encourage coaches to do this on their athletes behalf as soon as they arrive at the meet on both Friday and Saturday. There will be a table nearing the clerking tent which check marks need to be placed next to athletes who are present to compete and lines through an athlete's name or relay indicates an athlete has been scratched. No mark indicates a no show and the athlete and relay will be scratched out of the event. The developmental 1600s on Friday and morning 3200s on Saturday will not be reseeded as we understand teams and athletes cannot get there early enough to check-in over an hour ahead of time for the first running events of both days. The check-in and scratches table applies only to Friday running events from the developmental 200 onto the last running event of the day and to the Saturday running events from the 100 meter hurdles onto the last running event of the day. Athletes and relays report back to the clerks to receive their section and lane/hip # assignment approximately 30 minutes before their race. So to summarize that check-in is a two-step process for running events, check-in sheets table as soon as you arrive at the meet to declare your intent to compete in an event (w/ check mark) or scratch out of an event (w/ line through). Sheets for individual events get pulled roughly hour before event is to start as we then reseed the event. Approximately 30 minutes before your event, athletes need to return to clerk for their new section and lane/hip # assignment. Understood? State leading 4x800s at Taco Bell Classic
State leading 4x800 meter relays for Virginia were produced all the way down in Columbia, South Carolina this past weekend by the girls from Oakton at 9:26.35 and the boys from Colonial Forge at 7:54.06. During the indoor season, the Oakton girls got down to 9:20 at the indoor nationals while Colonial Forge had finished third at the AAA State Indoor meet with a season best time of 7:56.38. Also breaking 8 minutes in the race at the Taco Bell Classic were the indoor state runners-up Oakton in fifth place at 7:56.41. The Colonial Forge boys were under the old meet record time of 7:54.40, but finished third in a competitive race with 9 teams breaking 8 minutes. The Oakton girls were fourth place finishers in their race and trailed by Colonial Forge in fifth place at a time of 9:34.81. Top leg for the Colonial Forge girls, Frances Morales, won her second major invitational mile race in as many weeks with a VA #1 performance of 4:58.74. The sophomore Morales had to be some of the best milers in the Carolinas in order to earn the victory. One of the state's top freshmen distance runners in Allie Klimkiewicz of Oakton, just missed breaking 11 minutes in the young outdoor season with a third place finish of 11:02.98. Klimkiewicz had ran one of the fastest 3200 meter times indoors for a freshmen in state history with her 10:44 at the AAA State Indoor Championships. Third place finishes were also reserved for the top Virginian performers in the boys' individual races between Colonial Forge's Brian O'Loughlin in the 3200 meter run and Oakton's Michael McNamee in the 800 meter run. Both will teammates together next year at Virginia, O"Loughlin posted a PR of 9:19.74 for third in the 3200, while McNamee also ran a lifetime best in the 800 at 1:54.59 for a third place showing as well. O'Loughlin's current teammate at Colonial Forge, David Pennesi, had a slight improvement of his mile time from the Colonial Relays, but significant improvement in place from sixth to second place at Taco Bell with a time of 4:20.77. With a personal best mark of 174'11", E.C. Glass sophomore Michael Zajac had bit of an off day in the discus throwing for only 160'4" in South Carolina, but still was able to garner a runner-up finish in the event. Another underclassmen star in the field events, Colonial Forge freshmen Crystal Jones matched her season best clearance of 5'4" in the high jump to take second overall this past weekend. The Osbourn Park girls dominated the sprints with relay victories in the 4x100 and 4x400 C.D. Hylton's Hali Mcfadgen and Heritage's (Leesburg) Marcus Finney both swept the hurdle races with Mcfadgen posting times of 14.99 (100H) and 45.29 (300H) respectively, while Finney defeated previous state leader Chris Blaylock of Battlefield with a VA #1 performance of 38.64 in the 300 meter hurdles. South County distance runner Mary Cate Scully chopped off a whopping 19 seconds from her previous PR in the 3200 meter run with a very surprising and impressive run of 10:54 in the 3200 meter run. Boys 100 meter dash state leader Michael Thomas-Brown was unable to lower his 10.72 season best, but still won the 100 meter dash with another sub 11 clocking at 10.99. Thomas-Brown was able to extend his state leading mark in the long jump though by a half of an inch with his leap of 23'5.50". The girls SMR saw Battlefield and Forest Park loading up with their top two half milers on anchor between Ellison Grove for Battlefield and Brianna Krumholz for Forest Park, which led to some quick times in the rarely contested event with Battlefield as the winners at 4:08 and Forest Park trailing in second at 4:10. Meanwhile, the Forest Park boys were not only able to win the boys' sprint medley in a solid time of 3:38, but also take the 4x100 meter relay as well in 43.62. The throwing events were dominated by two individuals between Battlefield's Galissia Cause and Fauquier's Luca Carrillo as each thrower claimed first in both the shot put and discus. Cause went big with her first throw ever over 40 feet in the shot put at 42'9.50", while Carillo had a breakthrough performance in the shot as well with his first 50 footer at 51'2". Group AA is starting to become the place for quarter milers this spring with Loudoun County's Steven Graham running a 48 second open 400 two weeks ago and now Fauquier's Thomas White knocking on that door as well. White won the 400 meter dash at the Gojekian Twilight Classic with a lifetime best time of 49.17 to follow up his 49.58 victory at the Knights Track Classic last weekend. Northern Virginia Invite - Day 1 Highlights
Looks to be another deep year for the girls 3200 meter run in Virginia with two more girls breaking 11 minutes this spring on Friday at the Northern Virginia Invitational with two sophomores in West Springfield's Carolina Alcorta (10:54.67) and Robert E. Lee's Bailey Kolonich (10:57.20) battling it out for first in the race with Alcorta ultimately the winner. Thomas Edison sophomore Louis Colson won the 3200 convincingly for the boys in 9:31 and was followed by two much much improved runners producing big PR runs in Yorktown's Ryan Hart (9:38) and Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett (9:39). Another Edison excelled on their home track in jumper Anna Williams, who leaped to one of the state's better marks in the triple jump in this young outdoor season with her leap of 37'11" at the Northern Virginia Invitational. Shaquera Leach, a Group AA state title contender at 400 meters from Briar Woods High School, won her specialty with ease in her 57.22 clocking. Leach also showed versatility with a victory in the high jump at a clearance of 5 feet. Westfield's Nathan Kiley finished second to Rajee Dunbar from Gonzaga in DC, but was pulled along to another swift low 49 second performance this season at 49.15 (ran 49.01 last week at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite) as he seeks for his first sub 49. The Lake Braddock girls faired well in the technical events with sophomore Rachel Fasana clearing a personal best height of 10'3" in the pole vault, while junior Jennie Fofi edged out a pair of Thomas Edison hurdles for first place in the 100 meter hurdles at a 15.55 clocking to drop 7 tenths off her previous all-time best. VA State Leaderboard (4/11)
Photo by John Herzog A list of the Virginia state leaders in each event (as well as links to full event rankings) so far in the 2012 outdoor track & field season prior to meets held on April 11th or after. Atlee junior Griffin Carmichael quietly snuck in a state leading time at 800 meters last Wednesday in a quad meet at Douglas Freeman High School. Carmichael, who was All-State indoors at 1000 meters and ran a season best of 2:32 in that event this past winter, dropped considerably time in the 800 last week from his sophomore year best in the event. A 12th place finisher in the 2011 Central Region Outdoor Championships at 800 meters, a much improved Carmichael will be a favorite to win a regional crown this spring with a 3 second PR to open his 2012 outdoor season with a VA #1 time of 1:55.34 at Freeman.

Wolverine Invitational Highlights
Photo by John Herzog The Central Region invaded the Wolverine Invitational with the Cosby boys and girls winning the team titles at North Stafford High School, while several other individuals and relays from Central Region schools were also winners. The girls 300 meter hurdles matched up two of the Central Region's best in the event between Alea Stevens of Armstrong and De'Nisha Smith of Cosby. Smith is the reigning regional champion in the 300 meter hurdles, while Stevens was the runner-up in last year's regional finals after being the fastest qualifier in the prelims and seed entrant coming into the meet. Stevens was able to get a little revenge on that loss with a decisive near 2 second margin of victory at the Wolverine Invite in her 44.70 clocking (Smith was runner-up at 46.40). After failing to qualifying for the state meet in the 400 meter dash last spring, Claire Tito of J.R. Tucker is looking to return in her senior season. Tito got off to a nice start and could get an auto qualifier before the regional meet following a strong winning time of 57.86 at North Stafford. Her teammate Denise O'Rourke found herself in an excellent discus field featuring fellow Central Region competitor Logan Edwards of Cosby with both throwing over 120 feet, but O'Rourke with the best mark of the day at 125'8". Colonial Forge sophomore Frances Morales did not rest up long after her impressive victory in the high school mile on Friday at the Colonial Relays. After returning back from Williamsburg, Morales followed her 5:02 mile PR on Friday with a 2:20 PR in the 800 meter run at the Wolverine Invite on Saturday. Too bad that Morales was not in the 3200 meter run for Millbrook senior Crystal Nelson who on consecutive weekends has been unable to find competition to push her in the 3200 meter run, but still ran her second sub 11 minute time of the spring with a season best time of 10:53.18 for the AA indoor 3200 meter state champ. The boys' portion of meet was somewhat lacking in terms of performances compared to the girls with many of the event winners coming from a contigent of Maryland and DC schools. However, the 3200 meter run was owned by one Virginia school in Stafford taking the top 3 places all under 10 minutes in Ian Macleod (1st, 9:44.31), Greg Bohmke (2nd, 9:54.83), and Joey Abbatiello (3rd, 9:59.55). All three were key members on Stafford's state cross country champion squad from last fall. More highlights... Wolverine Invitational Complete Results

Vince Bradford Relays Highlights
Matthew Zajac of E.C. Glass is throwing for some of the best marks in state history for an underclassmen in the discus throw. Recently at the Bradford Relays, Zajac threw for a season best mark of 171'1" which was not far off his remarkable freshmen year best of 174'11". Zajac is following in the footsteps of his older brother Michael Zajac who was a state champion thrower at Glass and went onto a successful collegiate career at South Carolina. Matthew Zajac won his first of potentially four state titles in the discus as a freshmen, which was a rare feat in itself much less his attempt of winning four consecutive titles. Other top performances at the Bradford Relays came predominantly in the field events as well including a sweep of the triple jump by Charlottesville athletes David Johnson (46'8.75") and Christen Edwards (37'0.25"), a 40 plus foot throw mustered by Heritage's Lillie Reid in the shot put, and a 14'6" personal best clearance from Ken Ritchey of Jefferson Forest in the pole vault. Best time on the track came from a quartet of Blacksburg boys distance runners challenging a sub 18 minute time in the 4x1600 meter relay with a near 4:30 per leg average with their final time of 18:02.70. The multi-versatile Erika Jackson of E.C. Glass kept her focus narrowed on the hurdles this weekend, which paid off with two W's in the 100 (15.86) and 300 (48.36) meter hurdles. Glass teammate Zakiya Bateman has a sub 12 second hand-time in the 100 meter dash from this spring and is working to legitimate that performance with an FAT time similar following a 12.34 clocking at the Bradford Relays over AA indoor 55 meter champ Latrice Morris of Heritage. With their 3:25.85 victory in the 4x400, the Liberty Christian Academy boys kept E.C. Glass from completely dominating the sprint relays as the Hilltoppers rolled out swift times in the 4x100 (43.10) and 4x200 (1:30.62) meter relays. More highlights... Colonial Relays HS Mile: Bile 4:14 & Morales 5:02
Annandale senior Ahmed Bile and Colonial Forge sophomore Frances Morales were the race winners in the high school miles run on Friday evening at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg. Bile (pictured right by Dave Watt) was looking for a fast time potentially a 4:10 performance or faster to secure his place in the Penn Relays mile, but when his top competition among the entrants in Ned Willig of Great Valley (4:11 1600/1:51 800 runner from Pennsylvania) was a no-show, the race setup was not in the cards for such a time with the returning Group AAA 1600 meter outdoor champion Bile winning in a state best time of 4:14.84. Skyline's Thomas Madden made a nice challenge late in the race to garner himself a big PR of 4:16.51 for third place, while Princess Anne's Matthew Schwartzer was able to nip him for runner-up honors in a PR as well at 4:16.32. Top girls' entrant Kimberley Ficenec of Mountain View was scratched from the race after waking up with illness on Friday, so that opened the door for others to compete for first place. It ended up being a two-person race between Monacan's Kaila Blackburn and Colonial Forge's Frances Morales. Running with a new cast on her hand, Blackburn did much of the pacework before Morales made her pass late to secure the win in 5:02.19 with Blackburn close behind at 5:03.44. In the girls' distance medley relay held on Friday, the Kellam girls won posted an impressive time of 12:34.27 to distance themselves from the second place relay by 20 seconds. Colonial Relays HS mile today features Bile & Ficenec
Photos by Scott Reid The Colonial Relays is one of the longest running and most respected track meets in Virginia. Primarily a collegiate event, the Colonial Relays at William & Mary had offered high school events as well for years in the middle of the meet but several years ago opted to do away with the high school portion. This year marks the return of a limited number of high school events at the Colonial Relays, featuring mainly events offered at the Penn Relays, with athletes and relays hoping to impress the selection committee for Penn to be included. This Friday evening includes a high school mile, which is led in the girls' race by returning New Balance Outdoor Nationals 800 meter champion Kimberley Ficenec of Mountain View and in the boys' race by two-time Foot Locker All-American and sub 4:10 miler Ahmed Bile of Annandale. MileStat.com will hop over to cover this race at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg in the midst of covering the two-day CNU Captain's Classic this weekend in Newport News. Also a great opportunity to check in on some former VA high school athletes competing collegiately. Colonial Relays - Meet Page Colonial Relays - High School Entries Colonial Relays - Live Results

Leslie Sherman Invitational Summary
The Leslie Sherman Memorial Invitational was held on Thursday at West Springfield before many athletes in the Northern Region are off on their spring break vacations. Mount Vernon's Michael Thomas-Brown winning a total of 3 events including two state best performances with his clocking of 10.72 in the 100 meter dash and leap of 23'5" in the long jump. The Mount Vernon junior Thomas-Brown has shown himself to be much improved from last spring when he qualified for state competition in the 100 meter dash and had a sophomore year best of 11.10. He also won the 200 meter dash at West Springfield High School with a time of 22.49. The Westfield boys were impressive throughout the meet with numerous event winners to win the team title over host school West Springfield. In the 800 meter run, Westfield swept the first four places with Tyrone Walker as the winner at 1:57.89 followed by teammates Max Chambers, Steven Mitchell, and Troy Sevachko. Other members of their state champion relays indoors in the 4x800 and 4x400, Nathan Kiley and Jeffrey Edmonson were individual winners in other races with Kiley taking the 400 meter dash in 49.01 and Edmonson crossing the line first in the 3200 at 9:43.02. Not only did Westfield dominate on the track, but Justin Little shined for the Bulldogs in the field events. Little, an 8th place finisher at the AAA State Indoor Meet, extended his best mark from the winter in the triple jump by over 2 feet with a VA #2 performance of 47'5.25" VCU recruit Carina Peter outdid Mount Vernon's Thomas-Brown in terms of event wins on Thursday at West Springfield. The Herndon senior Peter was the fastest in the 100 meter dash (12.77) and 200 meter dash (25.73) and jumped the farther in the long jump (16'5.50") and triple jump (37'7.75"). Her mark in the triple jump was only an inch off the current state leading performance. No debate on who has the top girls 800 meter time in Virginia after an impressive runaway victory by West Potomac's Sarah Jane Underwood at the Leslie Sherman Invite. Underwood, who recently signed with Penn State, posted a swift time of 2:13.88, which is only a second off her all-time best in the event. Underwood is one of more than a handful of girls returning this spring in Virginia who have already run or capable of breaking 2:10 at 800 meters. James Robinson's Chioma Onyekwere, the 2012 Group AAA indoor state runner-up in the shot put, recorded a solid early season mark over 40 feet with her winning toss of 40'2". Onyekwere, who signed with the University of Maryland, was an All-American indoors with a fifth place finish at the New Balance Indoor Nationals last month. Challenge to MileStat.com Visitors: Become more active contributors!
With MileStat.com having to cut back this outdoor season on its budget for freelancers photographers at meets throughout the state due to decreasing subscription revenue, it does not mean that the site has to cut back on the amount of photos and videos found on the website. We go to plenty of track meets and see plenty of parents, athletes, and coaches with quality equipment and technology to capture races in photos or record in video. The site has been setup for sometime to empower the website's visitors to upload their own photos and videos from meets as found on the meet pages with the add your photos and add your videos links. For whatever reason, the many people at each meet taking photos or videos at meets choose not to upload them and this feature has been largely ignored and unused. Now we are giving you a reason to use the user upload features! MileSplit recently added a site feature to keep track and ranking site visitors based on how much they contribute to the website in terms of photos, videos, forum posts, etc. Well each week, MileStat.com will give a free subscription for 3 months (a season) to the site visitor who contributed the most from the previous week in terms of points tabulation in the top contributors rankings. We are not sure ourselves the exact point system developed by MileSplit, but know that is definitely weighted more towards those who upload photos and videos to the site rather simply post on the message boards. So this weekend's meets will be a good opportunity for you to pull out the camera (photo or video) and upload away when you get back home from the meet to see if you contribute enough for a free subscription! Current subscribers who win will simply get an additional 3 months added onto their current subscription expiration date. Top Contributors Rankings -
Raleigh Relays 3200: Link 2nd - 9:16, Bethel 4th - 10:40, Buss under 11
At tonight's Raleigh Relays for the featured high school 3200 meter races in the middle of the collegiate meet, Blacksburg junior Nick Link (pictured right by Frank Locascio) put forth his best race of the track season this year indoors or outdoors with a runner-up personal best time of 9:16.18. An early season state leading performance by 15 seconds, Link had a nice rebound race at NC State after disappointing races at both the Group AA State Indoor Meet and New Balance Indoor Nationals following a solid regular season campaign during the indoor season. A state runner-up in cross country, Link hopes to compete for the Group AA 3200 state title this spring, but also has another year being only in 11th grade. In the girls' race, 2011 Group AA cross country champion at 5000 meters and 2012 Group AAA indoor state champion at 1600 meters Carolyn Bethel showed herself to fit in nicely at the in between distance which she has won state titles at. Bethel dropped 23 seconds on her 3200 meter PR with a fourth place finish of 10:40.15. Joining Bethel under 11 minutes for the first time was Blacksburg senior Kate Buss, who has made her own remarkable improvements over the past two years to become her school's most consistent and top performing distance runner. Her junior year best 3200 meter performance came in the same race at Raleigh Relays last March with a 11:21.74 and fast forward 12 months late to find Buss running a time of 10:55.76 to place 10th in a loaded field. MileStat.com is now for middle school T&F and XC too!
Starting this spring, MileStat.com will begin to do more coverage for middle school track and cross country in Virginia. It will start with posting results and entering athletes performances in the database. This will not take away from our high school coverage and will be a nice lead-in for those athletes and parents getting familar with the competition at the next level. Over the next several weeks, we will be adding middle school team pages missing to the site and hoping Virginia middle school coaches will start sending in their meet results to the site for posting. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will begin to start seeing where they rank state-wide against other track athletes in their grade level. Brian Watkins I-95 Invitational Coverage
Defending Group AA state outdoor 400 meter dash champion Steven Graham of Loudoun County started off rolling in his first meet of the outdoor season on Saturday at the Brian Watkins I-95 Invitational. The junior Graham clocked a full second PR at 400 meters with a swift 48.48 performance to beat his previous best of 49.55 from his state title win last spring as a sophomore. Graham finished second in the 200 meter dash later in the meet to Group AAA 55 meter dash state champion Mustaqeem Williams of Forest Park. The speedy sophomore Williams was only a hundredth off his personal best at 21.85. Graham's teammate and another junior at Loudoun County High School, Patrick Joseph put together a great distance double at Potomac Senior High School this weekend. Joseph won the 1600 meter run in 4:18.67 and then came back shortly after to take first in the 800 meter run as well to hold off Naval Academy recruit Greg Bohmke (1:57) in a 1:56.92 clocking. Both Joseph and Graham for Loudoun County appeared to show little race rust coming from a school and county which does not offer indoor track. C.D. Hylton junior Hali Mcfadgen was a winner in three events at the Brian Watkins I-95 Invite including a VA top 100 all-time performance in the 300 meter hurdles with a convincing 44.77 victory. An All-State finisher in Group AAA for the 300 meter hurdles as a freshmen (6th, 45.24), Mcfadgen dipped under 45 seconds for only the second time in her high school career after claiming first earlier in the meet in the long jump (16'3") and 100 meter hurdles (15.58). Kiara Howell opens with VA #3 all-time 49-1 mark in shot
Photo by John Herzog Grassfield senior Kiara Howell opened her 2012 outdoor season with a VA #3 all-time mark in the shot put at Wednesday's Southeastern District regular season meet at Lakeland High School in Suffolk. The Group AAA indoor and outdoor state champion Howell recorded a personal best throw of 49'1", which ranks her only behind state record holder Tracey Toon of Menchville at 49'9" from 1982 and Lindsay Neuberger of Cox at 49'6.25" from 2002. Howell tied Neuberger for the state indoor record at the Eastern Region Indoor Championships in February with a mark of 48'4.75". Her big throw on Wednesday now ranks her #4 in the United States in the young outdoor season. Kiara Howell Athlete Profile Southeastern District Girls Regular Season Meet #2 Results

Virtual Meet Preview of the proposed VHSL 6 Class System
The VHSL has recently released a proposal for a 6 classification system for championship/playoff season for high school sports in Virginia to go into effect for the 2013-2014 school year. Each classification is broken down into two sectionals which are made up of four conferences. Its still early to tell how a 6 classification system would be applied to track & field and cross country in Virginia in regards to the championship meets. Football and basketball basically already have 6 state champions with two divisions in the 3 class system based on school size. Track & cross country could be split up as the proposal indicates down to 6 classes (roughly 50+ schools/class) or there could be a combining of the 6 classes (6A/5A, 4A/3A, 2A/1A) for state championship meets (roughly 100+ schools/class). Several interesting discussions and stories are created if this proposal comes to reality including many schools dropping down or moving up to make new rivalries (Ex: Blacksburg vs. Midlothian in a 4A/3A class cross country meet). Then some schools moving into classifications with schools who have predominantly not had indoor track seasons or offered such events as the pole vault or 4x800 meter relay (Ex: Maggie Walker dropping all the way down to 2A). The new system would certainly help smaller Group AAA and Group AA schools be more competitive in championship season meets being placed against schools of similar size rather than schools with geographic or traditional rival ties. Some of the inner city schools in Richmond, Portsmouth, and Norfolk have seen their enrollment numbers dwindle compared to their Group AAA regional schools growing larger in nearby counties which they compete against. MileStat.com was able to make projections of how schools would compete in their new classifications by doing virtual meets from the past cross country and outdoor seasons in 2011 as well as virtual meet previews of the returning athletes for the 2012 outdoor and cross country seasons. New Balance Indoor Nationals - VA Saturday Highlights
Quick highlights and summaries of day two performances (primarily top 10 finishes) from Virginians at the 2012 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City. The Western Branch girls won their program's third national title in the shuttle hurdles in the past four years as the Lady Bruins bettered their own facility record time of 32.73 from one year ago in a winning performance of 32.31. With two of the faster performers in state history in the 55 meter hurdles between Group AAA state champ Taranisha Taylor and state runner-up Tiffany Ellick as well as depth beyond them, it was really on question if they could run a clean race in order to score another national title ring in the event. Averaging their time for four legs equates to roughly a 8.07 split each. Read more highlights and performances by Virginians from Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Nationals

The 2012 Class of VA Indoor T&F All-Timers
Quite a few athletes and relays this past indoor season became "All-Timers" in Virginia high school history with top 25 performances ever in the state's history. Grassfield's Kiara Howell (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) has the leading performance of this year's group breaking into the top 25 all-time list in tying state indoor record in the girls' shot put with former Cox High School thrower Lindsay Neuberger with a 48'4.75" mark from the Eastern Region Championship. Meanwhile, several athletes are all-time top 25 performers in multiple events including Cosby's Megan Moye (1600, 1000, 3200), Nansemond River's Shakeela Saunders (LJ, TJ), Mountain View's Kimberley Ficenec (1000, 1600), Western Branch's Taranisha Taylor (55 hurdles, 55 dash), Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase (1600, 3200), Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel (1600, 1000, 3200), Oscar Smith's Michael Cherry (300, 500), Cave Spring's Katie Fortner (1600, 1000), Hidden Valley's Carolyn Bethel (1600, 1000), Click here for a list of this year's athletes and relays achieving VA high school indoor all-time top 25 performances. New Season = Need for New Subscribers
SUBSCRIBE - DONATE With another season set to begin in a few weeks with the first meets of the 2012 outdoor track season, MileStat.com would also like to use the excitement of the new season to drum up support and entice more site visitors to subscribe to help the site's coverage for the upcoming season. With the current budget and decreasing revenues in subscriptions from years past, MileStat.com is going to unfortunately have to make some tough decisions and scale back our site's on-site coverage presence this spring. We cannot afford to pay for our freelance photographers and any other additional site help or contributors. Not independent wealthy to pay for these photographers or myself spend 60+ hour weeks to keep the site updated as a hobby. Dependent on your subscriptions to make this all happen. The subscription sharing abuse is ultimately going to lead to the decline of the website's coverage. You as the site visitors power this site's existence and its quality. Do you want MileStat.com to be run by someone on a part-time and limited basis or by someone on a full-time basis with the resources to have freelancers at meets throughout the state of Virginia? Just check out some of the other MileSplit state sites with webmasters managing their websites on only a part-time and limited basis to see the coverage difference. You can see the different in where your money is going for a subscription is going to when compared to some of the other state sites. When we went subscription based in 2005, those who were site visitors before and after could see the huge difference and change in the site's coverage. A subscription is only $3 a month when you break it down to a monthly rate. Think about some of the more trivial things that you spend $3 or more on each month. My tentative plan for next year is return back to school to further my education and look at exploring a career and job elsewhere, which would take my time and energy away from the website while still maintaining MileStat.com but on a more limited and part-time basis. My preference would to be able to still do the site on a full-time basis and have the resources to make it grow and add more site help to expand the coverage. However, the current reality is that I'm going to have to explore other options away from the website for my own personal livelihood. You will see a big difference or dropoff in the site's coverage if I have to take this route as my time will be taken away more to school and other work to maintain a living and pay the bills. Our site traffic numbers indicate that there is a gross disportionate number of people who are visiting this site that are not paying subscribers. With the amount of content that is subscriber locked, there is no way all these people are viewing only the subscription-free content. Many are sharing subscriptions with others. On average, nearly 40,000 people visit adding up to average around 1.5 million hits on this website each month over the past year. Yet during that same time, less than 5% of these people actually subscribed to the website. I see the subscription sharing blatantly and happening often. Numerous kids using the same login ID to try claim their athlete profile. Openingly asking for another person's MileStat.com login on facebook to get access to download the photos and videos then uploading the photos on facebook to share with their teammates. Even some coaches buying a login for their kids to share and that login having a total of tens of thousands of logins in only a year's time (I don't even login to the site that much). If that culture still pervades in the Virginia high school track & field community, you are going to eventually get to the point of having no subscription content to actually need to get access to because there will not be able subscription revenue to operate the website. Bottom line message: No plans of shutting down the site. But if a large majority keeps taking this website for granted then don't be surprised if you go through a season without any or limited on-site meet coverage. Thank you to those who have and continue to support MileStat.com in many ways. The Virginia high school track & field community has been great to me for the past 11 years and now asking for your help again in another time of need and support. I do not want to drift away from this site and would rather continue to promote and cover this great sport for many years. Sincerley, Brandon Miles MileStat.com -
VA's Top Outdoor T&F Returnees
Photo by Victah Sailer of photorun.net  A list of the top returnees in each event for the upcoming outdoor season in each classification (AAA, AA, A, private) based on performances from the 2011 outdoor track & field season. Loudoun County is one of the better counties for high school track & field in the state of Virginia (especially outside of the Hampton Roads area), yet the powers that be in the county do not allow their high schools to have an official indoor season. One of Loudoun County's and the state's best returning track athletes is Broad Run senior Jonathan Russell, who last summer competed for Team USA at the World Youth Championships in the 400 meter hurdles. With Broad Run moving up to Group AAA this year, the 2011 Group AA state champion in the 300 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash will make the AAA state outdoor championships very intriguing and even more competitive. After a dormant winter in Loudoun County, Russell is ready for the new challenges in Group AAA.

Athlete Spotlight: Adam Visokay
Photo by Ryan Kelly  Adam Visokay did not start taking running seriously until his junior year and the rest of Virginia is grateful for his late start or he would have left many more runners in his wake of his furious final lap kick at 3200 meters. After catching everyone off guard last indoor season with a surprise runner-up finish in the 3200 meter run, the UVA recruit Visokay has turned it on at the end when it matters each following season. With a sub 60 second last lap in last spring's VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships, Visokay was able to run down the two pre-race favorites for his first state championship in a 9:09 PR. This fall, Visokay ran for team instead of individual glory for much of the season with one of the top ranked cross country teams in Virginia. However, after a second place team finish and third place individual finish at the state cross country meet behind two eventual Foot Locker finalists in Ahmed Bile and Sean McGorty, Albemarle coach Buz Male let his star runner loose at the NIke Cross Nationals Southeast regional in Cary, North Carolina. Visokay unleashed a 5K PR of 15:10 at the Southeast Regional to place second and earn the trip to Oregon for the national race. In Portland, Visokay showed that he had another level of performance or gear in him as he placed 10th (15:37) in a field including many of the nation's best distance runners to rival the top 15 performances by McGorty and Bile at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. This weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Visokay once again gets an opportunity to measure up against the nation's elite at the two mile distance following a second state title in his high school career with a 9:15 3200 PR run at the indoor state championships on February 25th. MileStat.com interviewed Visokay, the two-time state champion at 3200 meters, prior to his indoor nationals race.

Athlete Spotlight: Felecia Majors
Photo by Ryan Kelly South County junior Felecia Majors is becoming the Queen of Versatility in Virginia high school track & field. Majors, who has dominated the Northern Region in their past two championship meets indoors and outdoors, has taken her winning to the state level. At last weekend's VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championships, Majors took home a pair of individual state titles in the pole vault and long jump to become her school's first state champion in any sport. She nearly won a third state championship in the meet with a close runner-up finish in the 500 meter dash. Majors also became the first girls' vaulter ever from the Northern Region to clear over 12. After being just one of the legs on South County's great relays from a year ago, Majors has really elevated herself individually to be considered as one of the state's best returning track athletes for 2013. As a freshmen, her coaches did not initially think she could do much for them in the field events, but fast forward two years later and Major is the first pole vault-long jump girls' champion in AAA state meet history. MileStat.com interviewed Majors following with her double state title performance.

Top 50 Boys Indoor Returnees for 2012-2013
It is rare for a sophomore to win any state title in a boys' event, but Forest Park's Mustaqeem Williams has set himself up to become a three-time champion if able to successfully defend his 55 meter dash from last week over the next two years. His 6.37 clocking from the state meet finals is third fastest among non-seniors nationally and he has the third best returning mark among all Virginians in the long jump at 23'0.75" as well. (Photo by Ryan Kelly) With the exception of the upcoming New Balance Indoor Nationals for Virginia's best, the 2011-2012 indoor season is essentially in the books for the vast majority of high school track & field athletes in Virginia So lets take a look at next year's top 50 returnees in each event for the boys based on performances from this past season.

Athlete Spotlight: David Johnson
Photo by Andrew Kicinski Coming from a family of great jumpers including his father as one of his coaches and his older brother Anthony as high school outdoor nationals champion and older sister Joyce as a past Group AA state champion, David Johnson had to leap in some big footsteps with his accomplished family name at Charlottesville High School. Next weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Johnson is attempting to match his brother and add another national title ring for the Johnson household. "It's been great to try and mirror his accomplishments," said David speaking of his brother Anthony. Something that he took away from his big bro, "He always wanted to improve. He was one of those guys who didn't mind learning a lesson here and there with a bad meet." The current #2 ranked triple jumper in the United States this indoor season with a season best mark of 49'10.25", Johnson is excited about competing in his third high school national meet. "Looking to do some big things and represent Virginia." Johnson was a surprise finalist last year and finished 8th at the 2011 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City after having the best mark from the first flight. MileStat.com interviewed the two-time Group AA state triple jump champion and Virginia state indoor state leader as he preps for the indoor nationals.

Athlete Spotlight: Britani Myers
Photo by Andrew Kicinski One of the five state meet records from the Group AA State Championships broken last weekend at Liberty University was one of the oldest since the re-start of an indoor state championship for the mid-size schools in Virginia at the start of the century. With a US #6 time of 1:15.34, John Handley senior Britani Myers broke a 10 year old meet record with her second consecutive indoor 500 meter state title. Myers had started out in her freshmen year as an All-State cross country and 1000 meter indoor distance runner. But after giving up distance running and cross country after the fall of her sophomore year, Myers shifted her focus to shorter races on the track and developed her speed as a member of a state record breaking 4x400 meter relay at John Handley in the 2010 outdoor season. She went from being trained by a distance coach as a freshmen to a sprints coach as a sophomore and junior then now finds herself working with a middle-distance coach as a senior. A state runner-up in the 400 meter dash last outdoor season, Myers will still be running a few quarter mile races this spring, but as she prepares for a collegiate career at Virginia Tech, the 800 meter run looks to be her primary race with a goal of running a time near 2:10. MileStat.com interviewed the two-time Group AA state 500 meter champion Myers fresh off her US top 10 performance in Lynchburg last Saturday.

Virginia boys ranked top 50 in US indoors
A look at the Virginia boys individuals and relays ranked among the top 50 in the United States for the 2011-2012 indoor season based on the MileSplit US national rankings database as of February 29th. The 7 foot clearance by Rashaan Jones of South Lakes in mid January at Liberty University still puts him as a co-national leader in the high jump. A nice consolation for Jones after being knocked off for the state title this past weekend by Nick Simmons of J.R. Tucker with a US #3 height at 6'10". Tallwood's Steven Dunbar joins them in the top 10 nationally with a 6'8" season best performance. Next are three US #2 performers from Virginia between Ahmed Bile of Annandale in the 1000 meter run, Jamarian Bates of Matoaca in the long jump, and David Johnson of Charlottesville in the triple jump. Bile has clocked two 2:26 performances this season with his season best of 2:26.37 on the banked track of Virginia Tech in late January and his most recent 2:26 run came this past weekend at the state meet with a Boo Williams Sportsplex facility record time of 2:26.44 to repeat as state 1000 meter champ by 6 seconds. Only former Nansemond River and current Norfolk State star James Taylor has jumped further at Boo Williams than Matoaca senior Jamarian Bates (pictured right by Scott Reid) on the above ground runway at Boo Williams. With the boys long jump finals occurring during the excitement of running event finals on Saturday, the big US #2 mark of Bates was overlooked at a personal best leap of 23'11.25". A second state championship for Bates, who claimed his first state title last June at the outdoor state meet in the long jump. Charlottesville's Johnson nearly eclipsed one of the more impressive meet records at Group AA in the triple jump (Ryan McCoy of William Fleming - 49'0.50" - 2003). His season best of 49'10.25" would have gotten the record, but only was able to muster a best mark of 48'10.50" this past weekend at Liberty University, which would have won at the Group AAA State Meet by nearly a foot and a half. Oscar Smith junior Michael Cherry sits #4 nationally in both the 500 and 300 meter dash after successfully doubling to win state titles in both events this past weekend at Group AAA, which is a rare accomplishment in the sprints. Cherry leads 8 Virginians among the top 50 in the 300 with his 34.08 best, while leading a whopping 19 runners from VA among the US fastest 50 at 500 meters with his 1:04.20 state meet performance.

Virginia girls ranked top 50 in US indoors
A look at the Virginia girls individuals and relays ranked among the top 50 in the United States for the 2011-2012 indoor season based on the MileSplit US national rankings database as of February 29th. There are no national leaders or US #1's from Virginia, but the state is well represented among the top 10 and 20 in many events. The highest national ranking for a Virginian at US #3 belong to Grassfield's Kiara Howell in the shot put with state record tying throw of 48'4.75" and Louisa County's Javanique Burruss (pictured right by Andrew Kicinski) in the long jump with personal best leap of 20'1". Quite a few athletes are ranked nationally in multiple events including South County's Felecia Majors (5 - 300, 500, PV, LJ, TJ), Nansemond River's Shakeela Saunders (5 - 55, 300, 500, LJ, TJ), Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel (3 - 1000, 1600, 3200) Hidden Valley's Carolyn Bethel (3- 500, 1000, 1600), Monacan's Kaila Blackburn (3 - 1000, 1600, 3200), Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase (3 - 1000, 1600, 3200), Western Branch's Tiffany Ellick (3 - 55H, LJ, TJ), Mountain View's Kimberley Ficenec (3 - 500, 1000, 1600), Cosby's Megan Moye (3 - 1000, 1600, 3200), Herndon's Carina Peter (3 - 55, LJ, TJ), and Western Branch's Taranisha Taylor (3- 55, 300, 55H). At 500 meters, 28 of the top 50 times in the nation are from Virginia, but important to note that the event is not run in several states which have an official indoor season. In a historically great and fast year for the 1000 meter run in the state with 14 girls running under 3 minutes, Virginia has nearly one half of the top 20 times in the United States (9 total) in the mid-distance event. The 55 meter hurdles was not as deep of an event as the 1000 meter run nationally, but definitely was loaded up front with four girls dipping under 8 seconds to give Virginia four of the nation's seven fastest hurdlers.

Updates to Group AAA State Meet All-Time Lists
Mountain View senior Kimberley Ficenec stands alone as the only athlete or relay from this past weekend's Group AAA State Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton to have set a new meet record. Ficenec's winning time of 2:51.46 (also US #7 in 2011-2012 season) took down a 12 year existing meet record held by Kecoughtan's Elizabeth Bayne from the 2000 State Championships at 2:53.90. After doubling back from a sub 5 minute runner-up 1600 meter performance to Megan Moye, Ficenec had plenty of competition to press her to the record time as the race turned out to be the fastest ever in meet history. A total of five runners in the fast section broke into the top 15 all-time performances in meet history with Ficenec, Indian River's Shannon Morton (#2 at 2:52.67), Midlothian's Skylar Evans (#5 at 2:54.58) and Marie Johnston (#9 at 2:55.17), and West Potomac's Sarah Jane Underwood (#15 at 2:56.49). Speaking of Megan Moye, the Cosby senior had one of the best distance triples ever in meet history starting on Friday with a 2:07.41 F.A.T. anchor leg split to give her 4x800 meter relay team the victory in a #5 all-time meet performance of 9:16.65. She followed on Saturday with a pair of individual wins in the 1600 and 3200 meter races producing remarkable times of 4:53 and 10:25 respectively. Both races ranked her #2 all-time in meet history behind the great Erin Keogh of Langley, who was a former two mile national record holder and Foot Locker/Kinney Nationals cross country champion in the 1980s. Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase made Moye work hard for her third win of the meet and her efforts resulted in Chase moving to #4 all-time in meet history with her second place time of 10:29.66. No meet records were found in the boys' results for this year's meet, but some athletes and relays positioned well inside the top 10 on many all-time lists. Annandale senior Ahmed Bile's virtually time trialed run in the 1000 puts him only behind American mile record holder (both professional & high school) Alan Webb with his sizzling time of 2:26.44. Bile has two of the top three times in meet history at 1000 meters when including his win last year in the event. Prior to this year, only four girls had gone under 8 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles at the AAA State Meet. After Saturday's finals, that number almost doubled. Western Branch had a pair making names for themselves in meet history with a 1-2 finish from Taranisha Taylor (#5 at 7.95) and Tiffany Ellick (#6 at 7.97), while Hampton sophomore inserted herself into the top 10 list with her 7.99 clocking for third place. The high jump state champions from the Central Region tied with several other past great jumpers in their winning clearances this weekend. J.R. Tucker's Nick Simmons is now tied with 7 others at the #3 spot with his victorious height of 6'10", while Matoaca sophomore Brianna Hayes will be inserted on the all-time list with 10 others at 5'8" for the 4th best performance in meet history. Oscar Smith junior Michael Cherry was the lone sprinter for boys to make a major dent into the all-time meet list. In his extremely difficult and impressive double of winning both the 500 and 300 meter dash state title, Cherry is now ranked 13th in the 500 at 1:04.30 and 8th in the 300 with a 34.08 clocking. Recap of 5 girls meet records set at Group AA
While the record books remained in tact and unchanged for the Group AA boys, their female counterparts will require the record keepers at the Virginia High School League to make some major revisions. A total of five meet records were set in the girls' portion of the 2012 VHSL Group AA State Indoor Track & Field Championship meet. A quick recap of those record breaking performances below along with photos and/or video. Photos by Andrew Kicinski Louisa County senior Javanique Burruss joins only former Blacksburg distance runners Peter Dorrell (boys 1600 & 1000) and Joanna Stevens (girls 1600 & 3200) as a meet record holder in multiple events. Burruss set a new meet record twice in the 55 meter hurdles. First in the prelims as the leading qualifier at 8.32 to break the record initially and then Burruss lowered her recently gained record by another 7 hundredths of a second in the finals to a personal best clocking of 8.25. In the long jump, the current US #3 performer with a season best of 20 feet 1 inches, Burruss once again etched her name in the VHSL state indoor meet record books with a leap of 19'7.25". Video: Girls 55H Prelims - Girls 55H Finals The meet started fast with all-time best performances between the double from Burruss and big throw from Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans. Evans, who already set the outdoor state meet record last spring at 45'9", is continuing to add more accomplishments to her high school career which will continue on next year the College of William & Mary. Evans bettered the old meet record by over 8 inches with her throw of 43'0" at Liberty University on Saturday. Hard to imagine that the Tabb girls could come back this year with a faster relay last year's crew which featured one of the fastest Group AA sprinters ever in Kiara Porter. Porter has since graduated and running well collegiately at VCU. In the meet history of Group AA State Indoor Championships, no girls 4x400 meter relay had even sniffed at sub 4 minutes with the record standing at 4:04.75 from the 2004 Western Albemarle squad. Despite having no competition to press them after their first leg got them out into the lead, the Tabb girls were able to destroy the meet record and the 4 minute barrier in the process with their 3:59.39 performance. Their relay team included Brittni King, Leigh Soistmann, Taylor Omweg, and Alison Harmatz. Video: Girls 4x400 Sections 3-4 The most impressive meet record performance of the meet may have belonged to John Handley senior Britani Myers in the girls' 500 meter dash. Not only did Myers successfully defend her state title in the event, but she broke a 10 year old meet record previously held by former Jamestown High and UVA runner Ashley Gore of 1:15.53 from the 2002 state meet at the banked track of Virginia Tech. The time by Myers at 1:15.34 would have won the AAA girls' 500 state race held on Saturday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Myers was not fresh for the race either having run a great anchor leg to break her John Handley 4x800 meter relay up into second place, but their team had been disqualified in the race. VHSL State Indoor Championships On-Site Coverage
Look for videos and photos to be uploaded to website from both championship meets starting late Saturday night and all day Sunday. Group AAA State Championships 2012 VHSL Group AAA State Indoor T&F Girls Team Champions Cosby High School The Cosby girls needed more than arguably one of the best distance triples ever in the VHSL State Indoor Championships history from Megan Moye in order to knock off the heavily favored and defending state champions from Western Branch. However, Moye did her part with a 2:07 anchor leg on the 4x800 meter relay to bring her squad from 7th to 1st place in making a gap of over 80 meters. The 64 second first 400 meter split from her 4x800 leg showed little effect or fatigue for Moye in her races on Saturday as she defeated a 800 meter national champion in Kimberley Ficenec for the 1600 meter title in 4:53 and a Foot Locker Cross Country All-American in Sophie Chase for the 3200 meter title in 10:25. Cosby added 6 points with a third place finish in the 4x200 and Moye got more help from teammates Logan Edwards in the shot put (6th) and Alex Moseley in the 500 meter dash (4th). They needed more points to clinch it for the Titans and they got it from their 4x400 meter relay with Moseley on anchor. Cosby held off a late charge from top seed Bethel and 500 meter state champion Maya Moore to win the event in 3:53.36 and become the first Central Region girls 4x400 indoor state champions since John F. Kennedy High School in 1995. Cosby becomes only the fifth Central Region school to win the indoor state track girls' team title. Final score: Cosby 54, Western Branch 50. (Photo by Ryan Kelly) 2012 VHSL Group AAA State Indoor T&F Boys Team Champions Western Branch High School Western Branch boys set the tone for the rest of the meet in the 55 meter hurdles prelims on Friday when they had heat winners in the first 3 heats of the event with Jamal Burris, Aaron Simpson, and Christopher Crawford. With four of the 12 finalists in Saturday's hurdles finals, the Bruins were bound to rack up some points and they did with a total of 13. Their fast start in hurdles allowed them to have the team title already well in hand before the 4x400 meter relay which their top seeded relay didn't even get a chance to race and add more points after a false start. Runner-ups Chris Crawford in the long jump and Byron Robinson in the 500 as well as third place from Josh Marriner in the 55 dash finals were their top individual performers along with a big 10 points from their state champion 4x200 relay which clocked the state's fastest time of the year at 1:30.16. Every point counts at a state championship and Western Branch received a single point from 8th place finishes in the sprints from Mondryl Glover in the 55 dash, Devante Cherry in the 300, and Corey Jones in the 500. Under head coach Claude Toukene, Western Branch has won four of the last six indoor track boys' team state titles - 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012. Regional Championship Coverage & Results
Moye sub 5 & sub 11 in the ASHE CENTER!!! One thing that Cosby senior Megan Moye cannot do is slow down. Moye forgot that you are not suppose to able to run fast on the Arthur Ashe Center's 145 meter no spikes allowed surface. At the 2012 Central Region Indoor Championships, she put together a nothing but record breaking distance triple which could stand the test of time and never be outdone at the Ashe Center. On Friday night, Moye anchored her 4x800 meter relay with a 2:19 split to a meet and facility record time of 9:38.04. On Saturday, the NC State recruit followed up that sizzling relay leg with a 33 laps of pacing done by someone appearing to possess super human abilities as an unbreakable machine. Moye broke the meet and facility record of 5:03.15 (Amanda Patterson of Midlothian, 2004) with the first sub 5 minute 1600 on the short track at the Ashe Center in 4:59.44. Not finished, Moye nearly lapped the entire field in the 3200 meter run which included two 11 minute flat caliber runners in Molly Breidenbaugh and Rachel Galton with the first sub 11 minute 3200 meter performance ever in the Ashe Center. Her time of 10:49.17 broke another meet and facility record previously held by former Midlo runner Amanda Patterson by 13 seconds. The Cosby girls were so dominated as a team that Moye could have skipped the meet if she wanted to and the Titans would have still won with their whopping team total of 110 points. Taranisha Taylor (pictured above Ryan Kelly) was one of several individual athletes from the Eastern Region Championships to have an all-time great performance this weekend. Taylor's 7.94 clockings in both the 55 meter hurdles prelims and finals ranks her #6 all-time in Virginia high school history. Grassfield had a pair of athletes elevate themselves among the all-time greats as Kiara Howell had a monster throw of 48'4.75" in the shot put to tie former Cox High great Lindsay Neuberger as Virginia high school indoor state record holder, while Trey Holloway continues to move up the top 10 all-time list in the 55 meter hurdles including a VA #4 all-time 7.24 clocking in the prelims. Carolyn Brown of Phoebus broke the freshmen 55 meter dash state record with a 7.02 performance in the prelims. Seven of the eight indoor regional championship meets will be held this week in Virginia with three slated for Wednesday (Northwest, Region I, Region II), two slated for Saturday only (Northern & Region III), and two slated over the course of two days on Friday and Saturday (Central & Eastern). The Region IV Championships were held this past Saturday at Virginia Tech. Meet directors email performance lists, time schedules, meet information, and results to be posted to milestat@gmail.com. Runner-up Moye leads VA girls under 5 at Millrose mile
Photo by Kyle Brazeil The state of Virginia was well represented in Saturday night's high school girls mile race at the Millrose Games with three Virginians competing between Cosby's Megan Moye, Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase, and Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel. The returning Group AAA indoor and outdoor state champion Moye established herself near the front at the start of the race and maintained a top 3 position throughout the race. The furthest which Moye fell back was to fourth place at the quarter mile around 73 seconds, but moved herself up after a 2:27 half mile split. While Samantha Nadel of New York was able to run away with a 4:46 win, the NC State recruit Moye battled with Nadel's North Shore High School teammate Brianna Nerud for second place in the final 400 meters after running just under 3:40 at the three-quarters mark. Moye edged Nerud at the line for a final time of 4:49.95, which was just off her VA #2 indoor all-time mile performance of 4:49.36 from the New Balance Games. Sophie Chase and Audrey Batzel got stuck in the back half of the field early on, but Chase was able to move up throughout to finish fifth overall in a time of 4:54.14, while Batzel made for three sub 5 minute milers from Virginia in the same race with her 8th place effort of 4:57.56. A mile PR for Chase, which converts to only a tad slower than her 4:52.06 1600 meter PR. Batzel improved her season best time of 4:58.07 from her Hispanic Games race which qualified her for the Millrose Games. The West Potomac girls competed in the 4x800 meter relay at Millrose and their quartet ended up running a time of 9:26.58 for 8th place. Millrose Games High School Results

VISAA State Indoor Championships Coverage
Girls Results Going into the final event of the meet, the Liberty Christian Academy girls held a narrow 2 point advantage over St. Catherine's in the team standings. After the 4x400 meter relay, there was no outright state team champion as St. Catherine's winning the event and LCA trailing in close behind in second place created the co-team champions between the two squads both tallying 143 points. Boys Results The Fork Union boys looked like the FUMA boys of old dominance, which the program at one point in time had a streak of consecutive state track titles spanning over 3 decades. The 2012 state indoor title was never in question for Fork Union and they further distanced themselves down the stretch with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 from Michael Idziak (2:33) and Avery Martin (2:34), which the pair also opened and anchored for Fork Union's first place 4x400 meter relay (3:30.18). Both started their days as runners-up individually in the 1600 for Martin and Idziak in the 500. Race Videos More to come from the VISAA State Championships including race videos and photo gallery from Brandon Miles.

Batzel (#7) & Johnson (#16) move up VA all-time 1000 list, Evans (#8) joins list
Three girls from Virginia competed last night in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational elite high school girls 1000 meter run. While competing unattached, Midlothian's Skylar Evans and Marie Johnston along with Audrey Batzel of Ocean Lakes, were pulled along in a loaded field to Virginia top 20 all-time performances. Batzel, competing again next weekend at the Armory in the Millrose Games mile, was the top finisher from Virginia with a VA #7 all-time performance of 2:53.05 for sixth place in the race. Batzel was closely followed in by Midlothian senior Skylar Evans in seventh place with a VA #8 all-time run of 2:53.38. Marie Johnston's old sister, Paige is #4 on the VA all-time list at 2:51.05, and she still has a year to close in on Paige's time after her VA #16 effort of 2:54.68 on Friday night. Midlothian coach Stan Morgan currently has coached four of the 16 fastest girls at 1000 meters in Virginia high school history with #4 Paige Johnston (2:51.08 - 2008), #8 Skylar Evans (2:53.38), #9 Kathleen Lautzenheiser (2:53.58), and #16 Marie Johnston (2:54.68). -
Athlete Spotlight: Sean McGorty
Photo by Don Rich Coming from two high school and collegiate track star parents in pole vaulting dad Kevin McGorty and distance running mom Vicki Verinder (now Vicki McGorty), Chantilly junior Sean McGorty has already made a name for himself with his own two feet. McGorty this past fall qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals (like his mother did at Langley in the early 1980s) in San Diego and had an impressive run at Balboa Park to finish 10th overall and beat his friendly regional rival at Annandale High School in Ahmed Bile as well in the race. While not pressured or pushed hard to run by his parents when entering high school, McGorty made a big jump in his sophomore year to earn All-State honors in both cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. Most impressive among his All-State accolades as a sophomore was the fact that he was able to successfully double in the distance races with top 8 finishes both indoor and outdoor in the 1600 and 3200 meter run. McGorty is part of a growing list of national caliber and state champion distance runners being developed by Chantilly coach Matt Gilchrist in the past six years following the likes of Chris Foley, Lia Divalentin, and Brad Siragusa. The Chantilly team, led currently by McGorty, has been achieving some first-time feats and ending long droughts for the program including winning district titles last year in track and winning major invitationals in cross country as well as advancing for the state meet for the first time since 1992 this past fall. At the first day of the Concorde District Championships last week, McGorty got the Chargers out to a grew start when he ran a state leading and personal best time of 4:15 for 1600 meters. MileStat.com interviewed the 2011 Foot Locker All-American in McGorty in between the six day break between day one (January 26th) and day two (February 2nd) of his district indoor championship meet at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Complex.

College Signings - Class of 2012
Ahmed Bile made it official. Hoya Saxa! February 1st was the first day for today's high school senior student-athletes to sign their National Letter of Intents with their future colleges and university. Several top athletes in Virginia had already made verbal commitments earlier this school year, while some waited till this week to make their decision and others are still taking their time and weighing their options. Let us know of any college commitments, which we currently do not have listed on our 2012 college signings list. If there is a NLI signing session, please send (email to milestat@gmail.com) in a photo capturing that special moment as well. -

St. Christopher's Invitational Coverage
David Johnson (Charlottesville) US #1 49-10.25 TJ Javanique Burrus (Louisa County) US #1 20-1 LJ Audrey Batzel (Ocean Lakes) US #1 10:39.96 3200m Photos by Ryan Kelly MileStat.com will have photo coverage from Ryan Kelly at the St. Christopher's Invitational. We will also have frequent results updates throughout the meet (check the meet page throughout the two days for results by event). Three Virginia girls posted state leading performances on day one including two US #1 performances from Ocean Lakes senior Audrey Batzel in the 3200 meter run (10:39.96) and Louisa County junior Javanique Burrus in the long jump (20'1"). Batzel has put together a string of outstanding races over the last month including a 4:58 mile and 2:55 1000. Burrus had only been over 19 feet once, while being a consistent performer ov er 18 feet prior to her big mark at St. Chris. The third state leading performance came from Matoaca sophomore Briana Hayes, who bettered her VA #1 season best by clearing at US #7 height of 5'7" in the high jump. An outstanding boys' long jump competition with three over 23 feet led by winner Jamarian Bates of Matoaca at a US #7 leap of 23'8.75". St. Christopher's stellar indoor track facility for whatever reason has not produced the always fastest times in the 55 dash or hurdles, but Phoebus freshmen Carolyn Brown dispelled that assumption with a facility record breaking 7.04 clocking in the 55 meter dash.
