While the track 5K isn't an event that's contested in almost any state in the union by athletic associations, many athletes find races throughout the season to test themselves at the distance.

Distance festivals, in particular, have begun to generate interest among runners hoping to run those events in college, while national-level competitions like New Balance Nationals Outdoor and the USA Junior Championships offer prep athletes opportunities to race up.

No matter the reason, athletes find ways to get on the track for the 12-and-half lap race.

But how do those times translate to the fall? While there are obvious differences between the two, track times in the spring do offer an important evaluation and often can indicate just how ready an athlete is to lift off in the ensuing season.

Check out the comparisons in the slide show.
