The transition from freshman runner to experienced sophomore is a touchstone for many athletes who get an early taste of varsity action. Heading into the 2017 season, some of the emergent sophomores nationally could charge up the ranks and begin to establish themselves as contenders at top levels. That starts first with Aledo (Texas) High's Graydon Morris, who finished 34th at Foot Locker Nationals and was third in his Class 5A state championship in Texas. He ran the fastest time of any freshmen in 2016.
Not too far behind, however, is Carmichael Jesuit (California) High's Matt Strangio, who is looking to better his state finish from a year ago, and El Paso Hanks (Texas) High's Michael Abeyta, who was sixth in the same state championship race with Morris.
