Just how fast does great technique turn into power?

If you want your answer, just take a look at the top 100 national boys discus leaders from 2017 and chart their progression over the past three seasons -- see spreadsheet below. Canyon Del Oro (Az.) High senior Turner Washington, who leads the nation with a US #1 mark of 208-4 -- his first throw of the outdoor season -- came into his sophomore campaign with a solid repertoire, but has gradually mastered it over time.

His improvement from 2015 to now has produced an improvement of over 35 feet.

But beyond Washington, the numbers show that there's a sharp curve from honing technique to producing great throws. The US #2 thrower, Gabe Oladipo, a senior from Fort Bend Hightower (Tx.) High, has improved over 42 feet since 2015.

El Paso Chapin (Tx.) High senior Matthew Basurto has made the biggest jump, going from a 105-9 throw in 2016 to a mark of 193-9.5 this season. Within the top 10 of the national leaders in 2017, that's no surprise. Each thrower has made no less of a 38 foot improvement since 2015.

So far, in our top 10 our leaders come from three states: Texas, California and Arizona. It makes sense -- those states start outdoor season much earlier than the rest of the country.

There's no doubt, others from around the country will begin to post their own big throws. But don't be surprised when prior experience turns into significant progress.

In the discus, that's the name of the game.
