Four repeat champions, a few shockers and a handful of record-breaking performances highlighted the 2009 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (MIAA) All-State Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Bingham senior Erik Peterson recently won the UHSTCA Indoor 800m State Championship after overcoming a potentially career ending condition is recognized as the Milesplit Running Utah Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
It’s the 21st century: the mile is “in.” Well, who wouldn’t want to be the next Jim Ryun or Steve Scott or Alan Webb, especially if his high school PR is 4:02.62? But what if that runner had the courage to say “No,” realizing that he may be stronger in other areas of distance running? Ryan Hall, a 26-year-old Stanford graduate, recently told me that he has “joined the club” of a different group of distance runners. The humble phenom realized that after disappointing collegiate performances in the 800m and 1500m, maybe the role of a middle-distance runner would be more fitting for some other individual. “I wanted the pride from excelling at a more prestigious event, such as the mile, but I wouldn’t realize my true strengths until after I had failed.”

They are rolling on Tuesday night at the New York Armory for the Eastern States Championships with a load of stellar performances produced by athletes from New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere. Photo by Pat Montferrat of NJRunners.com Nick Vena of Morristown NJ broke several records with his sophomore national record mark of 68'11" as the throw set new shot put records for the Armory facility and state of New Jersey. In the prelims of the 200 meter dash, Whitney Fountain of Christopher Columbus put herself ontop of the national leaderboard with a New York state junior class record clocking of 23.77. The state of New Jersey nearly had a trade of control for the 400 national leader spot as junior Amber Allen from Passaic County High School was only three hundredths of a second away from a US #1 performance (Nijgia Snapp NJ 55.33) in the 400 meter dash with her 55.35 win in a close race against Colonie NY freshmen Kyle Plante (55.44). Bobby Andrews had a solid double in the distance races with victories in the mile run (US #6 4:12.31) and 2 mile run (9:21.34). Photo by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com Relay action has also been sensational on Tuesday night with US #1 times produced in both DMR races with the Southern Regional NJ girls anchored by Jillian Smith in 11:48.61, while the West Windor Plainsboro North boys featuring the Rosa brothers put themselves on the US all-time list at #4 with their 10:07.21 performance at Eastern States. The Southern Regional girls came back later to score another victory in the 4x800 meter relay (9:13). Despite a fall on their third leg, the Morris Hills boys of New Jersey were able to run just off their US leading time in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:47.81. In the 4x200 meter relay, Middle College posted a US #6 time of 1:29.36 with a relay which featured US 300 leader Jermaine Brown, who claimed first place in the 55 meter dash with a 6.31 clocking in the finals. The pole vault was a featured event at the Louisiana State Indoor Championships with US leader Morgan Leleux competing and a US #4 clearance of 16'2" from Joseph Caraway (Lacassine HS) to win the boys' state title. Leleux did not match her US #1 height of 13'2.50", but still had a solid clearance of 12'5" to win with another 12 foot vaulter in the meet with Merrit Van Meter of Met Park finishing as a state runner-up to Leleux at 12'0". The Catholic High School boys posted a swift US #7 and meet record time of 1:29.69 in the 4x200 meter relay, while the Baton Rouge girls scored victories in the 4x200 (1:42.76) and 4x400 (3:59.44) meter relays with their 4x400 time tying the meet record by a 2002 relay from their school. Bradley Syle of South Plaquemines clocked a US top 10 time in the 55 meter dash with a 6.31 performance in the prelims. Syle came back in the finals to win the state title with a 6.34 clocking. Catholic of Baton Rouge won the Division I boys' team title by a 69 point margin, while the Episcopal boys won the Division II title in a much closer contest by one point over Franklin. Two-time Foot Locker Nationals champion Jordan Hasay of California will make a rare appearance on the indoor racing stage for the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals being held this year at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Hasay will be competing in the two mile run and figures to be threat to the national indoor record time of 9:55.92 set by Melody Fairchild in 1991 or at least run a time high on the all-time list with Hasay's 9:52.13 best from last spring.
It was another pair of titles for Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy in the respective boys’ and girls’ competition at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Indoor Track and Field Championships, but it was Andrew Springer that stole the show. The nationally-ranked Westerly High senior capped off his final season on the indoor surface Sunday afternoon with three individual crowns, including record-breaking performances in the 3,000- and 1,500-meter runs and a near mark in the 1,000. The Danbury boys (63 pts) and Weaver girls (68 pts) claimed state titles at the Connecticut State Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the New Haven Fieldhouse. The meet saw an outstanding 600 meter race between Daundre Barnaby of Weaver and Cas Loxsom of Wilbur Cross with Barnaby winning in a state record and US #5 time of 1:20.29 with Loxsom as a state runner-up in US #7 1:20.65. Barnaby made it three state meet records on the day by later winning the 300 in a US #3 34.10 and anchoring his 4x400 to a 3:25.27 victory. Connecticut State Indoor Championships Complete Results

Rayianna Johnson of Chester, set a meet record in winning the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.45, a tie for US #1, and barely missed another in the 200 dash with a time of 24.04, a US #2 mark. When it comes to track and cross country in Rhode Island, especially at the high school and collegiate levels, Bob Rothenberg is a person that has worn (and still wears) several hats. For nearly two decades (1983-2000), Rothenberg was the head coach for the Brown University track and cross-country teams. He's also served as a race director for 22 years for the Ivy League school's two major regional (cross country and indoor track) high school meets. Among a never-ending list of other endeavors, Rothenberg is also a track official for the Interscholastic League and has been involved with the state outdoor championships, held every June at Brown, since the early 1980s, acting as the race director for the past three years. To say that Rothenberg has seen a lot of talented young runners over the years would be an understatement to the highest degree. But in all those years of witnessing some of the best prep milers that the state has had to offer, Rothenberg can't recall a year quite like the 2009 indoor track season.
Last year at the UK High School Indoor Invitational, the likes of Christian Taylor, Jacquelyn Coward, Brittany Long, William Wynne, Erik Kynard, Jasmin Stowers, Chalonda Goodman, Madeline Morgan, Patrick McGregor, Meshawn Graham, Marcus Rowland, Kenneth Gilstrap, Andrew Perkins, Michael Shaw, and Sean Keveran all made memories. Several of those athletes (Stowers, Goodman, Gilstrap, Morgan, and McGregor) will have another shot to make their mark at one of the strongest indoor meets of the year, while others, including, current US #1 60m hurdler, Wayne Davis II (Southeast Raleigh, GA) and Millrose Miler Cory McGee (Pass Christian, MS), will look to leave their own mark on the 280-meter oval in Lexington, Kentucky. It is regional week in Virginia with 8 indoor regional championships being contested for the Group AAA and Group AA classifications. All of the regionas from the largest classificiation (Group AAA) are being held this weekend on Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday evening at the Region II Championships, Western Albemarle senior Tyler Stutzman (pictured left by David Fleenor) posted an impressive performance on a short 10 laps to a mile indoor track at Fork Union Military Academy's Estes Center. Stutzman won the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:14.33, which easily breaks the facility record of 4:17 held by 2007 Nike Indoor Nationals 800 meter champion Axel Mostrag. Mostrag had broken a record previous held by former prep great Seneca Lassiter at 4:19 to put Stutzman's performance further in a historical perspective. Stutzman is currently the national leader at 3200 meters in 9:05.58. VA 2A Region II Championship Results The Region IV Championships were the earliest held regional meet in Virginia this past Saturday at Virginia Tech and the top performances came from the Blacksburg High School distance runners with their boys 4x800 meter relay team breaking 8 minutes to join roughly a dozen other squads in the country to have dipped under the barrier in 7:58.98. Meanwhile, Blacksburg junior Joanna Stevens broke 5 minutes in the 1600 meter run in 4:58.94 with twin sister Kathleen trailing close behind at 5 flat. VA 2A Region IV Championship Results
The 31st annual Simplot Games will be held this weekend at Idaho State's Holt Arena in Pocatello. Events start on Thursday with the preliminary heats of the 1600 and 3200 meter run as well as the weight throws. A hot girls' 300 meter dash race at Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center in Landover for the Maryland State Indoor Championships with three girls breaking 40 seconds on a flat track in the 4A race with Wooton sophomore Olivia Ekpone (pictured left by Kevin Milsted of Mocorunning.com) as the winner at 39.20. Ekpone currently has the nation's fastest flat track time for 300 meters with 38.96 performance at the Montgomery County Championships on January 26th. In order to win the Maryland 4A 300 state title, Ekpone had to defeat one of the nation's fastest in Eleanor Roosevelt's Aurieyall Scott, who clocked a US #3 38.95 performance at Virginia Tech last month. Scott was second to Ekpone in the Maryland state meet at 39.64 and would later get redemption with a 7.07 clocking to win the 55 meter dash state title. 55 and 60 meter dash national leader Devon Smith of West Lake kicked off his state meet with an extremely close 35.42 victory in the 300 meter dash as it was a photo finish between Smith and Frederick's Brady Wilson also timed at 35.42 to take the margin of victory for Smith down to the thousandths of a second to determine Smith as the 3A state champion. Eleanor Roosevelt's Denison Long clocked a slightly faster time to win the 4A state title with a 35.24 performance. In the 55 meter dash finals, Devon Smith would break his own state meet record (6.39) from a year ago with a 6.37 clocking. Foot Locker Nationals champion Solomon Haile was seriously challenged by Walt Whitman junior and NXN individual qualifier Andrew Palmer for the 4A 1600 state title. Palmer made a move with 300 to go, but Haile countered to pull away for a 4:18.74 victory and Palmer in second at 4:20. Haile came back in the 3200 meter run to win convincingly against Palmer in their second races of the day in a meet record time of 9:19.74. Solid winning times in the 4x800 meter relay races as the Broadneck boys came close to a sub 8 performance with their 8:02.05 victory followed by Winston Churchill in second at 8:06.64. A dominant run from Amirah Johnson of Eleanor Roosevelt in the 4A girls' 1600 meter race as the sophomore took the title by a 7 second margin of victory in 5:06.42 with most of the distance created between her and second in the final 400 meters of the race. Johnson scored a second state title on the day in the 800 meter run with a 2:18.66 victory. Catonsville sophomore Xauddina Whittington had a stellar double in the sprints in the 3A girls' division as she followed up her 39.94 victory in the 300 earlier in the day with a meet record performance in the 500 meter dash in 1:15.24. She was pressed in the 500 by Western's Danielle Douglas (1:15.86), who also ran under the old 3A meet record. The fastest time of the day in the 500 belong to 4A winner and Eleanor Roosevelt junior Afia Charles as the US leader dipped just under 1:15 on a flat track in 1:14.99. Charles later ran on the Eleanor Roosevelt 4x200 meter relay, which dominated the 4A race with the nation's fastest flat track time under 1:42 at 1:41.31. CH Flowers girls posted a solid time for second place at 1:43.48. A great time was posted by Quince Orchard's Wayne Bartholomew in the 4A 800 meter finals as Palmer took the lead from Gaithersburg's Antonio Palmer in the final lap for a US #7 1:55.97 victory. Bartholomew completed a difficult double with two challenging middle distance events by also claiming the 4A 400 state title in a personal best and US #6 1:04.92. Atholton High saw a 1-2 finish from their distance runners in the 3A boys 1600 and 3200 meter races with Graham Bazell (4:23.28) edging out teammate Christopher Wunsch (4:24.08) in the 1600, while Atholton senior Michael Lynch took the 3200 state title as well as the meet record in 9:25.53 with former state record holder Bazell in second at 9:39.61. Emily Vannoy of Thomas Johnson destroyed her own state record by over 2 feet with a US #2 mark of 47'10.25" in the shot put to win the 4A state title by over 9 feet. Juliett Bottorff (pictured right by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com)and the Tatnall girls (113 points) continued their streak of dominance in the state of Delaware with Bottorff as the 1600 and 800 winner led her squad to the indoor state championship this past Saturday at the University of Delaware's indoor facility. Bottorff ran a state record time in the 800 meter run with her US #13 2:14.94 performance in the middle of the triple which included a win in the 1600 earlier and also running a leg on the first place 4x400 to close out the meet. While Bottorff ruled the distance races, Delcastle Tech junior Celina Emerson was just as a dominant force in the sprints with individual state titles in 55 meter dash (7.31) and 200 meter dash (25.87) as well as close runner-up finish in the 400 meter dash (58.44). Emerson's performances helped Delcastle Tech to a state runner-up finish in the team standings to Tatnall with 75 points. The Christiana boys rode their relays en route to a state team championship by sweeping the three relay races with first places finish from their 4x800 (8:16.19), 4x200 (1:32.42), and 4x400 (3:30.88) meter relays. Christiana was nearly double the points ahead of the state runner-up squad from Newark High (48 pts) with a final score of 93 points. Caravel Academy's Darwin Gibbons nearly vaulted himself into a US top 10 ranking with his state meet record clearance of 15'6", which currently ranks him #11 in the country. Malachi Freeman showed speed can come from anywhere including the small state title from Delaware with a solid double victory in the sprints by the Glaslow senior with a 6.42 clocking in the 55 meter dash and 22.58 performance in the 200 meter dash. The 1A and 2A classifications of the Maryland State Indoor Championships were held on Monday with the largest classifications to come on Tuesday at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center in Landover. North Point boys and Middletown girls won the 2A team titles, while Western STES boys and Williamsport girls claimed the 1A state indoor titles. Top performances in 2A: Walkersville senior Jon Hill continues to soar high as one of the country's top high jumpers this indoor season and will move ahead to championship season with a Maryland state title and new 2A state meet record with his 6'10.50" clearance. Craig Morgan of River Hill dominated the boys 1600 field with a 2A meet record time of 4:21.96 and later came back to win his second title in the 3200 in 9:44.05. Two relay meet records went down as the North Point boys built momentum to their state team championship off their 1:31.81 clocking in the 4x200, while Winters Mill took down a three year old record in the 4x800 by knocking 16 seconds off their seed time in a 8:13.55 win. A thriller in the girls' 800 with two athletes dipping under the old state meet record with Middletown senior Brittney Caudle taking first in 2:16.85, while Queen Anne's sophomore Charlotte Staver not far behind as runner-up at 2:17.03. Caudle was doubling back from another tight race in the 1600 meter run against Century sophomore Mara Linde (2nd, 5:11.05), but Caudle came out ontop in the end in a meet record performance of 5:10.19. A deep girls' high jump competition with three juniors rounding out the top 3 and all over 5'4". Paxtutent junior Amina Smith became only the 8th girl in the country to clear 5'8" in the high jump this year as the height gave her the state title and meet record over North Point's Shavon Briscoe (2nd, 5'6". Top performances in 1A: Clear Spring junior Paige Shirk came in with a season best mark of just over 38 feet, but walked out as a state champion with a big personal best mark of 41'4.50" to shatter a 25 year old 1A meet record held by a former thrower from Clear Spring High. Sasha Smallwood of Pikesville set a new meet record in the pole vault as the sophomore cleared 11'1". Williamsport's Michael Lilley just missed the 1A state meet record in the 3200 by 3 tenths of a second with his 9:49.81 victory. Southeast Raleigh's Wayne Davis bettered his own national record in the 55 meter hurdles on Saturday at UNC for the North Carolina State Indoor Championships with a 7.05 clocking to better his 7.06 en route performance from a year ago in the 60 meter hurdles. Other top performances so far in Chapel Hill include: US top 5 performances from the champion (Torrence Hunt US #3 6.25) and runner-up (Fuquawn Greene US #4 6.29) in the boys 55 meter dash Sanura Eley-O'Reilly of Jack Britt running a US #3 500 at 1:14.84 Logan Elliston clears 6'10" to win the 1A/2A/3A state title in the high jump Hendrix brothers of New Bern go 1-2 in the 500 with Andrew Hendrix as the winner with the fastest flat performance in the US at 1:03.65. Shippensburg freshman Neely Spence made her first USATF World team with her victory on Saturday, February 7th at the USATF Junior Cross Country Nationals in Maryland. A day later, Spence took the time to talk with PennTrackXC editor Don Rich about her race, about training simultaneously for track and cross country, and about her continuing growth from a top prep runner, to what she hopes is a successful career at the collegiate level and beyond.

At the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Saturday night, the girls’ and boys’ junior mile races proved no falsity it that statement. In perhaps one of the most exciting prep races to be held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, University City (CA) High senior Mac Fleet edged Westerly (RI) High senior Andrew Springer at the line with a nation-best time of 4 minutes, 9.06 seconds.

For the Boys Junior race, German-mania contiued as Mr. Fernandez took the tape with Chris Derrick in second.
In a meet which is suppose to showcase the best collegiates in the country, the few high school events contested at the Armory certainly stole the show at the New Balance Collegiate Invite on the first day of events on Friday. Two national records were set in two high school events, while US #3 all-time and US #4 all-time performances were recorded in two other events. Robby Andrews, fresh off his Millrose mile victory, capped off an amazing seven days by breaking Alan Webb's 1000 meter national record by over a second in a dominating 2:22.28 performance. An incredible 1:52.3 last 800 meters helped the UVA bound senior from Manalapin High School (NJ) make history on Friday night. The New Bern boys ran faster than the national record in the 4x400 last week, but on an oversized indoor track at East Tennessee State. The relay from North Carolina now has official possession of the national record after dipping under the old national record (3:13.34) on a 200 meter indoor track at the Armory with their 3:13.06 clocking. The past seven days have been "as good as it gets" as Robby Andrews (pictured above by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com) stated shortly following breaking Alan Webb's national record in the 1000 meter run (2:23.68) by almost a second and half with his 2:22.28 clocking in the New Balance Collegiate Invite's junior men race. After a somewhat slow and strategic first 200 meters, Andrews took charge with only US 800 leader Sadiki White able to give chase. However, Andrews dropped White and the rest of the field with a lap to go and poured it on to the finish line similar to his great close in his Millrose victory last Friday night at the Garden to take down Webb's national record. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls (pictured above by Tim Fulton of ArmoryTrack.com) made up for a dropped baton at the Virginia Tech Invite several weeks ago in the 4x400 as they saw the Bethel girls end up taking the #1 national ranking with a 3:48 win in Blacksburg. At the New Balance Collegiate Invite, there were no baton mishaps and there was not a single weak leg either with a consistent 55 second split for all four legs as the Eleanor Roosevelt girls checked in at a US #3 all-time performance of 3:41.75. Benjamin Cardozo of New York took second in a very solid time of 3:44.

Tuesday evening at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA for the Southeastern District Quad Meet, Grassfield's Karimah Shepherd and Nansemond River's James Taylor posted incredible marks in the jumping events. Shepherd, the current national leader in the long jump and triple jump, improved her best in the triple with her fourth 40+ foot performance of the season in a VA #6 all-time mark of 41'2.50". Taylor, ranked #2 in the 300 meter dash and #3 in the 500 meter dash nationally, moved up in the national rankings with his performance Tuesday in the long jump with a personal best mark of 24'8" to rank him second in the nation only behind Marquis Goodwin from Texas (24'11"). Historically, Taylor's performance ranks him #8 all-time in Virginia high school indoor history.

Jordan Hasay, one of our country's brighest young female distance stars, has decided to continue her running in college at the University of Oregon. The two-time Foot Locker Nationals champion and 2008 US Olympic Trials 1500 finalist will be joining an already talented squad which placed second at this past fall's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships to Pac 10 rival Washington. Hasay will now have the opportunity to compete at least four years for the school (University of Oregon), town (Eugene), and track (Hayfield) which became big fans of the small framed young distance prodigy last summer at the Olympic Trials in which she set the high school national 1500 meter record in the process of qualifying to compete in the finals of the women's 1500 meter run as only a high school junior.
