With a stellar season already behind her, California's Christine Babcock is ready to race one last time. The University of Washington-bound senior closes out her prep career this week, taking part in the women's 1500m run at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. Babcock's had a season to remember after earning a national record for the 1500m distance and looks to make one last statement before heading off to college. It was a year that perhaps should have earned a U.S. #1 in the 100m dash and being labeled as the top sprinter at the high school level, but it turned out to be so much more. Florida's Jeff Demps (South Lake, FL) (pictured left by Victor Sailor of PhotoRun.net) started the season as a pre-season favorite to be the top 100m sprinter, but by the end he was running next to Tyson Gay in the Olympic Trials, tying a World Junior 100m dash record and quickly being labeled as a potential Team USA Olympic Team member.

Florida senior Jeff Demps, of South Lake High School, finished eighth place in his semi-final 100m dash Sunday afternoon.  Demps got off to a shaky start, tried to push in the middle, but couldn't respond to the professional athletes he was competing against.  Demps crossed the line in 10.34, well short of his 10.01 from Saturday evening.  It was a surprising weekend for Demps, advancing from the prelims, advancing from the quarter-finals, while running a new U.S. prep record, a new U.S. junior record and tying the World Junior record.  Detailed story coming shortly.  Men's 100m Semi-Final Results (Courtesy of USATF)

Another great day of competition wrapped up with some great performances. The best result of the day came from Florida's Jeff Demps, who set the national record in the 100m dash with his winning mark of 10.01 (wind-legal!). Demps started right next to Tyson Gay in the quarter-final race, getting off to a great start, but moved even better over the final 25 meters to place second in his heat and move on to the semi-finals tomorrow at 2:30 PDT. It was announced Thursday morning that distance running sensation German Fernandez won the Gatorade National Boys T&F Athlete of the Year award.  The Riverbank High School (CA) senior won the award after completing a record breaking season, one that saw him set the national record in the two-mile last weekend at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 8:34.40.  Earlier this season Fernandez ran the most impressive distance double ever, winning California state titles for 1600m in 4:00.29 and the 3200m run in 8:34.23, all in less than two hours.  Fernandez joins an impressive list of past winners and now sets his sights on his college career at Oklahoma State University. A near three hour weather delay slowed down Saturday's portion of USATF Junior Nationals considerably but many prep athletes still competed well, qualifying for the US Junior National team. The best performance of the evening came from Oregon junior Elijah Greer(pictured right by Margot Kelly), who won the mens 800m dash in 1:47.68, a high school U.S. #4 all-time and a junior class record. The last day of the USATF Junior National T&F Championships took place Sunday and the results presented were the perfect way to end an excellent weekend. Six Junior National champions Sunday were high school athletes, including Jordan Hasay (CA), Rachel Laurent (LA), Ryan Fleck (OH), Ryann Krais (PA), Geoffrey Tabor (OK) and Laurynne Chetelat (CA). The first day of the USATF Junior National T&F Championships got off to a great start Friday as athletes from across the country conviened at Ohio State University. Leading the way on Day 1 was Roxi Grizzle (Tonganoxie, KS). Grizzle (pictured left by Margot Kelly) placed second in the womens javelin competition with a U.S. #5 all-time effort of 170-03. Elsehwere, Booker Nunley (Garner, NC) ran one of the fastest prep marks ever in the 110m hurdles, taking home the title with his 13.40 effort. The third and last day of Nike Outdoor Nationals takes place Saturday and the final events of the weekend are looking outstanding. What a day it was Friday in Greensboro. So many memorable performances were made across the board that it was hard to just pick out a couple to highlight. The decision for many athletes this year was hard. Go to Nike Outdoor Nationals, our sports high school track and field champion, or take their talents to Ohio and compete at the USATF Junior National T&F Championships and try to make the world team. Both meets fell on the same weekend this year, so athletes had to make a choice. Well, it turns out many of the top athletes across the country want their shot to make Team USA and the Junior National meet is loaded with talent. See who's got a shot to make the team.

The first day of Nike Outdoor Nationals is about to start a fabulous weekend of action. Tonight the only high school races were the boys and girls 5k runs. From start to finish the 5k races were quite interesting, but in opposite ways. Foot Locker champion Ashley Brasovan (FL) ran away from the girls field, running by herself after two laps, winning in 16:18.53, U.S. #6 all-time. On the boys side NIN 5k champion Solomon Haile (MD) continued his impressive streak of national appearances, winning the boys race in 14:38.23, tying the meet record. Haile showed his strength at the mile, jumping to the lead and slowly lowering the pace. His tractics worked perfectly and he took home another Nike Nationals title. The Gatorade Player of the Year Program announced Wednesday morning that Chanelle Price (Easton, PA) (pictured left by Victah Sailer of PhotoRun.net) is their selection for the Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The Tennessee-bound Price has had an outstanding year, including her U.S. #2 all-time performance two weeks ago at the Prefontaine Classic. Many of the top prep boys will converge on Greensboro, North Carolina this weekend for Nike Outdoor Nationals. While numerous athletes will be traveling to Ohio instead to take part in USATF Junior Nationals, Nike Outdoors is still a fine place to be. Leading the story line is the clash between German Fernandez (CA), Luke Puskedra (UT) and Colby Lowe (TX) in the boys two-mile, while Rob Finnerty (MN) looks to push the four minute barrier again after rolling to a 4:01.09 last weekend at the Midwest Distance Gala. Muhammad, Mott run US#1 & 2 By Christopher Hunt BUFFALO – She came off the turn with such a lead that people standing by the finished gasped, most not even knowing who she was. Well, for those who didn’t know, here’s introducing Williamsville East eighth-grader, Kala Allen. Allen won the Division I 400 meters at the New York State championships in 55.61, claiming the race from the slower-seeded heat with a nearly two-second personal best. FULL STORY HERE

Photo by Victah Sailor - PhotoRun.net Running stride for stride with Olympic Gold medalist Maria Mutola could have been unnerving for recent Easton grad Chanelle Price. After all, it was 650 meters into the biggest 800 of her young career, and Price had been in her trademark position since the cut-in off the waterfall start – the lead. "It was a little nerve-wracking" Price said this week a few days after her US#2 all-time 2:01.61 at the Prefontaine Classic. But Price didn't back down, and stayed with Mutola through much of the final curve. It was the furthest Price had gone with the lead in a race with this level of competition. In last year's USATF Championships, where Price raced all three rounds before placing 7th in the finals... she had been caught and passed at the 600 meter mark.

One week to go before USATF Junior Nationals and Nike Outdoor Nationals. With such high stakes on the line in one week, many athletes are traveling around the country testing their limits one last time. Being undefeated in a track event is a hard thing to do over the course of two years. It's even harder when the state you run in is the always strong distance state of Illinois. Well, Mat Smoody (Palatine, IL) (pictured left by Paul Kwak) accomplished just that two weeks ago, wrapping up his Illinois season with his second consecutive state 800m title. The Wisconsin-bound senior came into the season ranked ninth among returnees nationally, but with some major accomplishments this season and a stronger base, Smoody is looking towards Greensboro, North Carolina and winning a national title. First order of business, because of all of the hype going in... Joseph Franklin did not have his night and faded off with postive splits for each lap after starting on pace for the first lap. He finished in 4:13. Despite the attention going in on that mile, the shorter stuff was where it was at! News came this morning from FLRunners.com editor Jason Byrne that Florida sprint sensation Jeff Demps (pictured left by Jason Byrne) is entered in the 100m dash at Sunday's Prefontaine Classic. Demps' addition makes him the third high school athlete in the professional meet, joining Chanelle Price of Pennsylvania and Luke Puskedra of Utah. The Great Southwest Track and Field Classic kicks off at the University of New Mexico Thursday as some of the top multi-event athletes in the country take part in the heptathlon and decathlon. Starting Saturday, the rest of this incredible invitational takes place, where dozens of U.S. top ten ranked athletes will go head-to-head in a full slate of events. On Thursday, Ryann Krais started her hep competition 79 points ahead of US-record-setting pace following four of the seven heptathlon events. But after the final three events, Krais came up a mere 11 points short of passing the national record of 5533. Krais' 5522 was a PR by 150 points. Her day two including an 18-10.50 long jump, a javelin of 104-11 and a 2:17.71 in the 800. At the 3rd Henderson Distance Festival, LaSalle senior Dan Lowry ran a 4:13.49 mile (60-2:03-3:07), the #1 PA (pure) time at that distance. The mark is a school record, eclipsing a 1974 mile run by John Burns. Cedar Crest's Tom Troxell went 1:52.87, which is just short of his PA#2 ranking from Districts. On Saturday at the Golden South Classic in Orlando, FL, frosh Taylor Ellis-Watson of the Springside School near Philadelphia, PRed in the 400, running a 55.65 to advance to the finals. Her 56.24 in the finals captured third place. In the 200, she ran 25.35 in the prelims and did not advance. At the MileStat.com Elite Track Gala @ Richmond, VA, Max Kaulbach, Germantown Friends, won the 1500 in a meet record and US#3 3:54.48, coming through the 800 in 2:04. What a season it's been for California's Christine Babcock. The Woodbridge H.S. senior ran 10:04.03 for 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational, taking Jordan Hasay to the line and running one of the top ten fastest times ever in the event. However, Babcock really broke onto the national landscape when she ran 4:36.57 for 1600m at her Master Section Championships, one of the fastest times ever run. At the California State Championships this past weekend Babcock ran the fastest 1600m ever with her winning time of 4:33.82, and when converted ranks her as the second fastest miler in prep history. It was reported early last week that middle-distance sensation Chanelle Price (PA) entered the women's 800m dash at the Prefontaine Classic. Well another high school athlete has joined the Prefontaine Classic this week, as Utah distance runner Luke Puskedra (pictured left in lead at NIN by John Herzog) has entered the men's two-mile. According to a MileSplit source, Puskedra will be attempting to break the high school two-mile record of 8:36.3h set back in 1979 by Jeff Nelson. More information coming on both Price's and Puskedra's Pre Classic races.

Alone in their thoughts but surrounded by other runners, the North Penn 4x800m relay team waits anxiously in the paddock area of Franklin Field at the 2008 Penn Relays. A gun sharply cracks and a swarm of professional runners charge out of the starting line just a few feet away from them. The overwhelming cheering and shouting from the crowd interrupts the four high schooler’s ability to think clearly about the monumental task ahead. Nervous glances at the competition, quick leg shake-outs, and swigs of cold water pass the time as the runners wait anxiously for the Championship of America 4x800m Relay to be called. Just as thunder breaks the silence before a storm, a screeching microphone finally calls for the athletes: “Would the lead-off legs of the Championship of America 4x800 Relay please step forward.” North Penn junior Brian Quintrell moves to the front of the paddock area, taking the time to look back at his teammates. Reassuring glances from seniors Steve Franks, Justin Bookheimer, and Zach Montijo will be the last thing that Quintrell sees before he steps onto the track and begins the much-anticipated 2008 Outdoor track.
