One of the most successful female prep distance runners of all time, California's Jordan Hasay continues to build her legendary status. This season Hasay won an epic 3200m dual over Christine Babcock at the Arcadia Invitational, while coming back earlier this month to run a strong 4:17.46 1500m race against professional competition at the Stanford Invitational. With her season now kicking into full swing, Hasay talks with us about breaking 10 minutes for 3200 at state this weekend, her goals the rest of the season, her surfing habits and much more.

Chanelle Price (PA) (pictured left by Irishrunner.com's Timothy O'Dowd) will get one big race between her final PIAA state meet and the Olympic Trials, and it won't be Nike Outdoor Nationals or USATF Junior Nationals. It'll be the prestigious Prefontaine Classic on Sunday June 8 at Hayward Field at the Univeristy of Oregon. The race is the Prefontaine retirement of 800 meter legend Maria Mutolo and features one of the strongest 800m fields seen on U.S. soil this summer. Much more soon.

National record holder in the 60 meter hurdles and 2007 World Youth 110 meter hurdles champion Wayne Davis of Southeast Raleigh (NC) will be competing at the 2008 MileStat.com Elite Track held on Saturday, June 7th at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The state of Virginia will try to throw its best at him with three of the top four ranked hurdlers already entered in Jeffrey Artis (13.99), Michael Quash (14.03), and VIncent Brown (14.10) as well as Nike Indoor Nationals 60 meter hurdles All-American and 3A 55 meter hurdles state champion Kevin Newsome. Davis has ran well ahead of those times including his World Youth record breaking 13.18 performance last summer in Ostrava, Czech Republic . Davis adds to a growing list of star athletes both from within the state of Virginia and out-of-state. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls dazzled the crowd at last year's Gala by beating a Virginia All-Star DMR team of Paige Johnston, Rachel Butler, Tasia Potasinski, and Catherine White. Arguably the nation's best girls track program in the nation over the past several years will be back for this year's event in preparation for the Nike Outdoor Nationals two weeks later. The school currently holds the nation's fastest times in both the 4x400 (3:37.16) and 4x800 (8:43.12) as their 4x800 time at Penn Relays set a new national record by an incredible seven seconds. A fantastic season came crashing to a halt today. Stanford-bound senior Chris Derrick (Sr., Neuqua Valley, IL) (pictured left by Scott Bush) was diagnosed with mono Wednesday. According to his coach, Derrick felt under the weather last Friday at his sectional championships, where he ran 8:58.88 for 3200m and 4:14.72 for 1600m. Despite running such great times, Derrick continued to feel worn down throughout the weekend. With Michael Fout (Sr., LaPorte, IN) out for the season with an injury and now Derrick with illness, Nike Outdoor Nationals will be missing two of its biggest stars.

Only two weeks ago, Mason Finley (Buena Vista, CO) (pictured left by Alan Versaw) became the third best prep athlete of all-time in the discus, launching the device 222-01. Besides becoming the third best thrower ever in the event, Finley also broke the national junior class record. That's right, this 6-08, 330 pound athlete is only a junior! We caught up with Finley after his impressive shot put and discus victories at his state meet this past weekend and asked him about his big throw, why he switched schools this past summer and much more.

Photo by John Herzog As the Virginia track teams head into championship season, it is worth noting that one of the most successful stories from our state so far has been the remarkable showings from the Bethel boys 4x400 relay, most notably, their 3:14.71 clocking at the Penn Relays.  The time, which was actually run in the preliminaries, launched the Bruins foursome of Austin Cuffee, Earl House, Sherrard Marrow, and indoor 400 national champion Ja-Vell Bullard into the finals where they placed second overall, but first among American teams. The sign in front of the school on Big Bethel Road states it all – Congratulations Cuffee, House, Marrow, Bullard - #2 in World.

Despite an injury that held her out of training for over 2 months, Ashley Brasovan bounced back to claim the 4A 3200 title in a very impressive 10:15.93. I sat down to talk to her about post season meets, summer training, next summers goals, and college.

Robert Simmons (Sr., Fort Bend Hightower, TX), one of the last remaining national ranked sprinters available on the recruiting circuit, officially signed with Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Monday. Simmons, who's been one of the top rated sprinters nationally for the past two seasons, ran 46.40 for 400m last summer at the Pan-Am Junior Championships in Brazil, marking him as the top returnee at 400m heading into the '08 season. German Fernandez (Sr., Riverbank, CA) has done it again. At the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships Thursday evening, Fernandez ran an impressive distance double. The Oklahoma State-bound senior won the 1600m run in a new U.S. #1 time of 4:05.57, running splits of 60, 61, 62, 62 according to The Modesto Bee. Fernandez also ran a great mark in the 3200m as well, winning and nearly lapping the entire field with a 9:00.10 victory. While news broke earlier in the week that Foot Locker champion Michael Fout (IN) will end his season due to injury, it seems like Fernandez has bounced back from his early season injury and is really rounding into shape. According to the South Bend Tribune, Foot Locker champion Mike Fout (Sr., LaPorte, IN) (pictured right by John Herzog) has decided to end his competitive season due to a lingering injury. Earlier this season we reported that Fout obtained a stress fracture during the indoor season and was taking his time getting back into top shape. Well, it seems that Fout's earlier injury healed, but according to the Tribune, "a case of severe tendonitis" is keeping him from training properly. He now looks to heal 100% and start preparing for his collegiate career at Florida State University. South Bend Tribune Article

Jeffrey Demps knows that the big money might be in football, but for a couple of days in April, his mind was far away from the gridiron. Demps, a sprinter at South Lake High School in Groveland, hasn’t just been dominating the state; he’s been running evenly with some of the top sprinters in the nation. He first made a big splash in 2007, winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes at regionals and the 100 at states, setting a state meet record. Since then he’s only gotten better and sparked a whirlwind of talk over where he would attend college to play football. He had his choice of colleges but eventually chose Florida over some of the top schools in the country. The strong Florida track program helped him make his decision, but his main intent was to join the speedy UF offense. But after an amazing season in 2008, he may stun a lot of college football fans by making track his number one concern.

The Lowery boys made a mark in the top five of the 300 hurdles, with Jermaine going PA#3 38.17 and Jerome PA#5 38.23. Jermaine also won the 110 hurdles, the 200 and the 400. LaSalle's Dan Lowery captured the mile and 3200. The 4x800 produced three PA top 20 times from Ryan, Father Judge and Monsignor Bonner. At District 1 at Coatesville, Methacton senior Ryann Krais won four individual events, taking long jump (18-01.50) Friday's rains, and the 100 hurdles (13.54w) and 300 hurdles (41.60) on Saturday. At the Friends' League Championships, Germantown Friends swept the team titles. Talitha Smith won the high jump (5-5) and the discus. At the Boys' Inter-Ac Championships, Malvern Prep's Doug Moppert won two events, the long jump at 22-5.75 and the triple jump at 44-05.50. Teammate Brian Fulton went 50.23 in the 400 and 1:59.29 in the 800. Penn Charter's Dareem David posted a PA#5 21.85 200. Teammate Kashif Smith tied PA#12 with a 10.89 100, with Haverford School's Tom Hopkins in a 10.90, tied for PA#14. Germantown Academy's Dean Melchionni cleared 6-6 in the high jump, now a tie for PA#10. FRIDAY: District 9 AA, David Cobb, Northern Potter, won the long jump with a leap of 22-00.50 and the triple jump with a jump of 42-08.75. THURSDAY: Chanelle Price (in photo to left) cruises to a 2:09.74 win in the 800 at District 11 AAA, even while being a little under the weather. Teammate Abby Schaffer won her specialty with a pole vault of 12-09.50. In District 11 AA, junior Anthony Davidson, Wilson, set a new district record, winning the 400 dash with a stellar time of 48.51, which is PA#4. Alex Zubey, Tamaqua, won the 1600 with a new district record of 4:19.50, and also won the 800, 1:56.60, and the 3200, 10:00.11. Casey Wagner, Tamaqua, continues to impress in the javelin, winning with a toss of 146-03. In District 6 AAA, Chloe Schmidt, the State College frosh sensation, continued to impress with a PR in the 800, now PA#2 with a 2:12.47. She also won the 1600 in 5:07.85. Central Mountain's Kristin Brandt won the long jump at 17-9 and took 2nd in the triple with a 37-05.25 to Altoona's Bethany Lender and her PA#2 39-00.50. Indian Valley sophomore Laura Loht wn the jav with a 135-10 throw. Altoona kept the stadium record in the family, as Jared George cleared 15-8, now PA#2. Teammate Travis Hammaker, who had set the record on May 2nd at 15-7, cleared 15-3 for 2nd. Altoona sprinter Alex Kenney is now PA#3 with his 21.64 200, and PA#4 with his 10.80 100. And Altoona senior Neal Huynh won two events – the jav in a PA#13 191-8 and the shot put with a throw of 51-6.50. He was runner-up in the discus. At District 10 AAA, it was the McDowell show as they swept the team competiton. And the 4x400 put up some great times as McDowell's boys ran a PA#4 42.64 4x100, with Cathedral Prep right behind in a PA#6 42.71. WEDNESDAY: At the Tue (field)-Wed (track) District 12 AA/AAA, the Swenson girls grabbed the #2 spot in PA in the 4x100 with a 47.73, behind only AAA Penn Hills from District 7. Two members of that relay also won individual titles, with Shanae Bailey going 12.11 in the 100 (25.01 200, 15.31 100H) and Anthonia Ballard over the 300 hurdles in 44.83 (2nd in 100H). Girls' High's Jasmine Wanamaker was .1 back. Simon Gratz hurdler Frank Wainwright is now PA#2 in the 300 hurdles after his 38.12. And teammate Khaliff Featherstone tuned up for his signature event with a 48.46 400, currently PA#3. A day earlier the field events, Franklin's Tajidin Mcgough cleared 6-7, tying him for PA#3. And Imhotep Charter's Herman Kirkland (in above photo) leapt 23-02.75 in the long jump. He also won the 100 in 11.19 and the 200 in 22.50. Joelle Neilson, Girls' High, won the long and triple jumps. At PIAA District 5, Brandi Harris, a Bedford junior, leapt into a tie for PA#10 in the long jump at 18-1. She also cleared 5-2 in the high jump. No surprises in the 400 and 800 as Tussey Mountain's Jordan Donaldson swept, going 49.38 and 1:58.87. Sophomore Zach Mullin of Everitt won the 100 and 200. Northern Bedford's Catya Gilbert took the shot and discus. Windber hurdler Liah Snyder captured both hurdle events. And Samantha Valiton, Chestnut Ridge, won the short sprints. In District 9 AAA, Bradford's Tyree Bennett won three events, including the 110 hurdles in a PA#9 14.83, the 300 hurdles in a PA#11 38.99, and the high jump. Double champs include DuBois juniors Shawna Posteraro, Bud Plaszenski, and Bethany Naugle, plus sophomore teammate Anna Pfingstler. Punxsutawney's Laybn Hollis captured the sprint double as well. At the PA Independent League Champs, Germantown Academy's Jen Hoy posted two PA top 10 performances, taking the long jump with a PA#2 18-04.25 and the triple jump in a PA#10 37-7. Talitha Smith, Germantown Friends, cleared 5-7 in the high jump, 2nd in PA only to Ryann Krais at 5-8. Max Kaulbach and Isaac Ortiz, Germantown Friends, went 1-2 in the 800. TUESDAY: At District 7AA, Christa Rogers, Quaker Valley, ended her last district meet with a bang, winning 3 events on the day, all top 10 in the state, taking the 100 in 12.14 (PA#7), the 200 dash in 24.98 (PA#8), and the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.55 (PA#3). Freedom's Ashley Adams, won the shot put with a throw of 40-05 (PA#9). At District 6AA, Cary Seymour, Central Cambria, finished off her last district meet with two individual championships, winning the 1600 with a PA#4 time of 4:58.01 (district record), the 3200 with a time of 10:38.55, which is PA#1, and running a leg of the winning 4x800 team with a time of 9:25.45. Central Cambria also won the 4x400. Kelsey Seymour won the 800 in 2:16.35, breaking her own district record. Ben Hatch, Bellwood-Antis, Jim Spisak, Bishop Mccort, Bobby Glenn, Penn Cambria, and Janae Dunchack, Northern Cambria, all won multiple events, Dunchack taking three. The official word from Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon came down that Nike Team Nationals is now officially renamed Nike Cross Nationals. While many minor changes will take place to the qualifying system, an emense change comes with the addition of individuals. 90 individual athletes, 45 boys and 45 girls, will be added to the 2008 race. Muhammad runs meet record 400IH By Christopher Hunt WHITE PLAINS – Suffern’s Shelby Greany convinced Kristin Reese of Carmel to race in the 1,600. They both wanted a fast race. They would both ensure that it happened. That’s why there wasn’t much strategy involved in this one. They ran attached at the shoulder, Reese on the inside. Every woman for herself. Greany readied herself at the start of the bell lap. They both turned it up on the back straight. Godby High School (Tallahassee, FL) senior and University of Tennessee signee Joseph Franklin really delivered tonight! An excellent field was assembled at the Running Zone All-Class Showdown in Melbourne, Florida. The 800 field included a plurality of the state champions in Florida. Former NCAA champ Jonathan Johnson served as the rabbit for the field, leading Joe and company through the first lap in 55 seconds. The goal was 1:50. With 40 meters to go before Johnson stepped off the track at the 600m mark, Joe reportedly took off and blew by Johnson. He took it home and kicked in the two lapper in a national leading 1:48.87. The time also places Joe #2 on the all-time 800 meter list in Florida. Meanwhile, Ashley Brasovan not surprisingly took home the title in the flrunners.com Girls Seeded 3200 meters. While many were hoping to see the record book rewritten in this event (Ashley set the state record of 10:13 last year at the state meet, and last weekend ran a 10:15 at the state meet), Brasovan put up a very solid time of 10:21.12 under steamy and humid Florida nightime conditions. She beat out the rest of the all-star field that included three other Foot Locker finalists from Florida and all of the 3200m state champions from Florida's four classifications. Emlie Amaro finished in second place with a time of 10:28.58 (a new personal best). Brittany Koziara and Kayla Hale rounded out the top four, running 10:36 and 10:37, respectively. Brian Atkinson won the Boys Seeded 3200 in 9:29 over Michael Wallace, Kyle Cooke and others. Nike Indoor Nationals 400 champ Ja-Vell Bullard of Bethel (VA) and soph Taylor Sykes of Great Bridge (VA) battled it out for the US #1 and US #2 times indoors in the 500 and will resume their rivalry again in an outstanding 400 field in Friday night's Southern Track Classic in RIchmond, VA. (Photo by JOhn Herzog) The ninth edition of the Southern Track Classic will be held under the lights on Friday night for the third consecutive year at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The meet will certainly carry a great deal of momentum into the 10th ever STC next May with another slate of stars expected to push each other to the highest levels of excellence. We are actually ten years removed from the first ever Southern Track Classic, which was held at Dinwiddie High School as the meet took a one year hiatus in 2004. Meet director Dan Ward put a great idea into action on that May night in 1998, which has been a crown jewel of a meet for high school track and field in Virginia ever since. Recruiting our state's best athletes to compete in a meet setup to have only one agenda in providing ideal conditions for running faster, jumping higher, and throwing farther. Suffern girls win East Coast DMR By Christopher Hunt WHITE PLAINS -- Tyler Stutzman didn’t want to waste any time. No point in that anyway. So when the junior from Virginia’s Western Albemarle took the stick for the anchor leg of the boys East Coast distance medley relay he didn’t hesitate before he reeled in the anchors from Shenendehowa and Colonie. “If you past them fast enough they start to think, ‘maybe I can’t stay with this guy,’” Stutzman said Some call it taking their hearts. Either way, Stutzman was right. No one challenged him and Western Albermarle, the Nike indoor Nationals DMR champs, won the East Coast distance medley relay on the first day of the Loucks Games. U.S. #1 800m runner Chanelle Price (Sr., Easton, PA) (pictured left by Victah Sailor) continued to show why she is the top middle-distance runner in the country Wednesday, winning the 1600m run at the LVIAC Championships (PA) in a U.S. #4 time of 4:46.7.  Price also earned a victory in the open 400m dash, winning that event in 54.2.  According to PennTrackXC.com, Price then came back to anchor her team's 4x400m relay team to victory with a 53.2 anchor leg.  Simply outstanding!  PennTrackXC.com

After taking the entire month of April off from competition, distance star German Fernandez (Sr., Riverbank, CA) (pictured rightby Scott Bush) returned to competitive action Wednesday at the TVL Championships (CA). Fernandez broke three league records, winning the 800m dash in 1:55.59, 1600m in 4:14.03 and 3200m in 9:09.90. After competing in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March, Fernandez felt some discomfort in his achilles. After scratching from the 3200m start list at the Arcadia Invitational in early-April, the Oklahoma State-bound senior took precautionary measures to make sure he is ready for the various championship action over the coming two months.

Daniella Bunch (Jr., Mahomet-Seymour, IL) had the goal of breaking the 50 foot barrier in the girls shot put all season long. On Monday evening Bunch did just that, winning the Corn Belt Conference Meet event with a new outdoor U.S. #1 throw of 51-00.75. According to one onlooker at the meet, Bunch's series of six throws were 49-00, foul, 50-00.50, 49-05, 51-00.75 and 49-09. This throw leaves the central Illinois junior only 2-03 off the junior class record of 53-03.75 set by Michelle Carter (TX) in 2002.  Meet Page & Results

Jordan Hasay (Jr., Mission Prep, CA) took it as a challenge.  Running in the 1500m fast heat at the Stanford Invitational Sunday night against many of the top professional milers in the country, Hasay placed a respectable tenth, crossing the finish line in 4:17.46.  The California distance star took out the race in 64 seconds while sitting at the back of the pack.  Throughout the race she moved up in the field, hitting the 800m mark in 2:14 and 1200m mark in 3:23.  With 300m left Hasay shifted into her kick, moving past a few athletes, but getting caught by two athletes in the final 35 meters.  Hasay's time was less than a half second off her personal best and left her less than a second off of Kim Gallagher's U.S. high school 1500m record of 4:16.6 set back in 1982. On Tuesday and Wednesday the top athletes in the Omaha, Nebraska area took to the Omaha Metro Track Meet to vie for local bragging rights. At the end of the competition, Millard North High School was able to raise the girls team trophy high in the air. One of the key factors to the Millard North win was the distance quadruple Emily Sisson (So., Millard North, NE) (pictured left by Scott Bush) accomplished. The sophomore distance star won the 800m dash in 2:15.46, the 1600m run in 4:58.76 and the 3200m run in 10:31.41. Sisson also helped pace her team's 4x800m relay to victory. Sisson's performances definitely rank her as the top mid-week performer this week. Results

Five seperate states host state meets this weekend as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Oklahoma all crown individual and team champions. While Florida should produce some of the best and deepest results of the weekend, every state meet has at least a few national caliber individuals worth watching. Along with the state championships, the BYU Invitational and Anchorage Invitational should provide some fantastic marks as well.

Saturday: Ije Iheoma, the Council Rock South SPRINTER, showed a stunning addition to her range by winning the 1600 at the Lady Rocker Invitational at Council Rock North, going 5:04.93. St. Basil's Colleen Gilmore was sub-2:18 for 800. And Alex Geiger, William Tennent, swept the hurdles. Ridley's Kevin Wilbank broke the 1985 Delaware County 200 meter record held by two-time Olympian and two-time 100m world record holder Leroy of Penn Wood. Wilbank's 21.2 hand-time came in the finals at the DELCO Boys Championships. Burrell's mark was 21.51. Glen Mills took over the top spot in the state in the 4x100 with a 42.0h, after Altoona had held the mark for a day at 42.37. North Penn swept the top spots at the Lower Merion Invitational, with Zach Montijo first in 1:56.54, Justin Bookheimer at 1:56.98 and Brian Quintrell at 1:58.76. Indian's Dan Dandrowicz won the long and triples in AAA. In AAA, Jordan Donaldson, Tussey Mountain, had a 4 9.24-1:56.68 night. And Mercersburg Academy's James Finucane challenged a Dave Mock 3200 record with his 9:22.28, while the 2nd place finisher in that race, Jim Spisak, Bishop McCort, challenged a Mock record in the 1600, going 4:18.30. At Thursday's Ken Montgomery Memorial Inv, Ije Iheoma, Council Rock South, posted a PA#4 200 of 24.98 to go with a 12.47 100. Neshaminy's Kevin Steinberg ran a PA#3 200 of 21.77 along with is 11.08 100. On Wednesday at the Philly Public League Champ Qualifiers, Swenson junior Anthonia Ballard won the 100 and 300 hurdles.
