Catherine White of Northside, who became the winningest athlete in Group AA history by raising her state title total in cross country and track to 15 after a second consecutive distance triple crown at the Group AA State Championships, was named the 2007 All-MileStat.com girls' distance runner of the year. Saturday, June 23, 2007, began as a rather uneventful day.  I worked on photo management and then Paulo and I went out to the biocomplexity site to take permafrost depth and water table measurements.  This only took a couple hours and then we headed back to BASC, Barrow Arctic Science Consortium, for lunch.

Woodside junior Dominique Jordan (pictured left by John Herzog), AAA state champion in the 200 and 400 meter dash as well as state leader in both events, was named as the 2007 All-MileStat.com girls' sprinter of the year.

Recent Fork Union graduate Axel Mostrag appears to be putting it together at the right time in the week leading up to the Polish Junior Nationals as in a tune-up meet on Friday, the University of Tennessee bound Mostrag clocked the fastest 1500 time that any US prep has ran this past season with a time of 3:47.31. His time converts roughly to a 4:05 full mile, which would put him just behind some of the top high school mile times in the country this year with the likes of Matt Centrowitz, Sam Borches, and Ben Hubers. He had plenty of competition in the race as he raced against seniors as well as juniors and finished 10th in the race with the time. The third place and fifth place finishers are both juniors as well as born a year before Mostrag in 1989 and clocked in at impressive times of 3:43.09 and 3:45.87 respectively. The Polish Championships begin on Tuesday of this week. Mostrag is competing in the 800 meter run as well, which several weeks ago clocked a season best time of 1:51.01 to finish third in the event. The BorderChallenge Championships have announced they will be promoting eight major in-season cross country invitationals as "BorderChallenge Pre-Regional Championships".  This label is being added to large pre-existing meets that are held at the courses where the post-season BorderChallenge Regional Champioships will be held.

Virginia Tech freshmen Queen Harrison has already earn herself a ticket to the Brazil for the Pan Am Junior Championships after a top two finish in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles at the USATF Junior National Championships today in Indianapolis. She now quickly shifts her attention to the 400 meter hurdles on Friday as she is heavily favored to become Virginia's next US Junior Nationals Champ as the top seed with a US juniors #3 all-time performance of 55.81 from her All-American third place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Hermitage High School graduate has well exceeded her expectations going into this year and is not looking to slow down anytime soon as the currently the fastest junior (19 & under) 400 meter hurdler in the World currently. Dutch's coach, Bennett Jones had this to say, “The disqualification was extremely disappointing for Johnny. The 110 hurdles has always been his best race and he was looking forward to trying to defend his championship and to make an attempt at the national record in the event. To have that opportunity taken away was not only unjust for Johnny, but also for all of those that wanted to see him perform one last time on the Nike stage. With that said, Johnny is now focused on running the best he can at the USATF Juniors and on continuing to get better each day. The event, to be staged at the Doubletree Hotel in Buckhead, willfocus on teaching high school and college cross country coaches andathletes the secrets of winning. 

Audio Interview with Ashley Brasovan after fourth place finish at Nike Outdoor. Brasovan says no one really pushed the pace in her Seeded Two Mile race, leaving her to lead. That took its toll on her at the end of the race when the other girls dropped big negative splits and her legs didn\'t have it. She will hang up her track spikes for the summer and start training for cross country after a short break.       Athletic ability runs in some families.  In Geoffrey Tabor’s family, it seems to gallop.  And Tabor’s skills extend well beyond the playing field.       A junior from Ardmore, Okla., High School, Tabor is one of the leading discus and shot put entries for the Nike Outdoor Nationals, June 15-16 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.         Sixth in the discus at last year’s NON, the 6-foot-1, 207-pound Tabor comes to Greensboro this year with a season best of 209-5 – the No. 1 high school mark in the land, a full four feet better than the year’s next-best prep performance. 

KYtrackXC.com just finished its third season covering Kentucky high school track and field, which brings the 3rd Annual KYtrackXC.com Outdoor Awards.  As with previous years, the awards will be presented in the categories of Sprinter of the Year, Distance Runner of the Year, and Field Event Athlete of the Year.  These awards are regardless of school classification.  Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in track and field this year. 

It was an incredible night for Maryland's biggest stars!  Early in the evening the Blazing Raiders of Eleanor Roosevelt tore it up in the 1600 SMR with a new national record of 3:51.09! Marika Walker held off the likes of New Jersey star Danielle Tauro to split 2:06 in the record breaking run. Walker returned later in the evening to anchor the 4x800-meter relay, making up a significant gap for a come-from-behind victory in 8:55.50.  Near the end of the evening there was perhaps one of the best two mile races EVER in high school track & field.  Craig Forys of New Jersey and Maryland's Matt Centrowitz battled along with many of the rest of the nation's bests.  Toward the end of the race it was those two alone going at it, as they had huge negative splits the last two laps.  With about 600 meters to go Centro started to drop the bomb and Forrys did his best to respond.  But in the end it was too much as Centro blew open a gap that Forrys could never make up.  In the end Centro won in a time of 3:41.55, a new meet record, third all-time for a high school runner, and matching a feet by the likes of Steve Prefontaine!  Several underclassmen made their presence known at Nationals. Thomas Johnson's Emily Vannoy launched the shot to a personal best 47-10, earning her 4th place and All-American status. Only a sophomore, she hopes to continue improving so that she can return next year and win it all.Maryland's deadly sprinters Justin Murdock and Lamaar Thomas battled each other in the prelims.  Both came up short of Texas star Whitney Prevost, but both were able to qualify for the finals based on time. Murdock's 10.78 edged out Thomas in the prelims, but Thomas got the best of Murdock in the finals, running 10.60 to Murdock's 10.69. The two athletes earned 4th and 6th place respectively and hope to return next year to go 1-2!Three Marylanders made the finals in the Emerging Elite 100-meter hurdles. The duo from CH Flowers High School, Imani Colbert and Lorraine Graham showed great promise for the future with their finishes in 14.52 and 15.26 respectively, but it was Kristen Brown from McDonogh who took home the Emerging Elite crown with the victory in 14.16.Graham Bazell of Atholton High School improved on his personal best with a 9:10 finish in the two mile race. Bazell took the lead in the final laps of the race but was unable to hang on for the victory.  His time would not hold up against the 25 athletes who broke 9:10, but it makes the sophomore the best two-miler in Maryland behind Centrowitz this year. WOW!  It was amazing to watch!  Many of you were able to watch those races live with us on our live webcast, which despite some technical problems around 9pm, was up and cranking during those most important races.  Thank God!  The final day of racing concludes today and you can watch it here!   On a cool, crisp, breezeless night perfect for distance racing, two girls and two boys broke the one-year old meet records in the 5000. Michigan's Marissa Treece opened an early lead and kept Pennsylvania's Lara Croffrord about 30 meters back the entire way, pushing across the line in 16:36.34. Crofford, who was alone in 2nd most of the race, went 16:43.46. The meet record of 16:57.21 was held by Bona Jones of Florida. Connecticut's Adam Vess and New Jersey's Doug Smith battlled over the last mile, with Smith taking a lead on the pentultimate lap, before the sophomore was overpowered by his senior racing companion on the final lap. Vess finished in 14:38.23, with Smith in at 14:40.76. The meet record of 14:48.43 was set in 2006 by Ben Massum of New Jersey.

 Attending the Press Conference for the Prefontaine Classic was very cool. I honestly had never been to anything like that before. Athletes who were on hand for the press conference were: Jeremy Wariner, Sanya Richards, Liu Xiang, Asafa Powell, Bernard Lagat, Michelle Perry, and Alan Webb. See videos and a photo gallery from the conference. 

The Seminoles have just clinched their second straight national championship at the NCAA D1 Nationals in Sacramento!  LSU took the lead this morning, but with wins from Ricardo Chambers in the 400m and Walter Dix in the 200m the Seminoles have secured their win.  LSU still has one more event, the 4x400 to close the meet, but even with the win it will not be enough.Dix had a fantastic meet.  He had triple play, winning the national championship in the 4x1, 100, and 200.  The 100 meter victory on Friday was 9.93, the fastest ever for a US-born collegian  The meet capped an amazing NCAA season for Dix, who blazed a 19.69 last month in the 200 meters (fastest time in the world this year).  The 200 meter race was not as fast as expected, giving John Capel's (Hernando HS, U of Florida) meet record at least one more year of life.  But a win is a win, especially when it captures the title for your team!  Dix was never challenged in that 200 meters and looked to ease up for the win with a time of 20.32. Congratulations to the Ricardo, Walter, Coach Bob Braman, and Seminoles everywhere! Live Results 

While the boys should see a few US top 5 and US top 10 performances from likes of Sean Holston in the 200 meter dash and Dylan Ferris in the 800 meter run among others, the girls at the Gala have two events in which the US high school national records could be seriously threatened or at least US #1 performances are likely even if the record attempts fall short with the Blazin' Raiders (Eleanor Roosevelt MD) in the night's final event in the distance medley relay and Northside senior Catherine White (pictured left by David Fleenor) in one of the first races of the evening in the 2000 meter steeplechase.

The second annual MileStat.com Elite Track Gala will be contested tomorrow at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia with an excellent assembly of some of Virginia's best athletes as well as decent number of outstanding out-of-staters making the trip to compete in the post-season event. The meet once again has attracted a high quality field including the likes of national champion sprinter Sean Holston of Robert E. Lee as well as arguably the nation's top girls' high school track program in the United States in the Blazin' Raiders from Eleanor Roosevelt in Greenbelt, Maryland. From the start of the boys' high jump competition at 2 pm and the remaining field events at 3 pm to the conclusion of the meet seven or eight hours later with the All-Star distance medley relays, there is plenty of great competition for spectators to enjoy. Pictured right by Mark Keenen for NCRunners.com: Dylan Ferris, a junior from East Forsyth High School in North Carolina leads a very deep 800 meter field assembled for the Gala with 11 entrants under 1:57. Ferris is a current US #8 performer in the event a 1:51.48 and last weekend ran a US #2 time in the mile of 4:08.1. Girls preview on the way!

Chattanooga distance runner, Lanni Marchant, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDa) announced Thursday. As a First-Team member, she is automatically nominated for All-America honors.

The MileStat.com Elite Track Gala has grown greatly from its first year into becoming one of the top high school post-season meets on the East Coast. The meet will feature some outstanding athletes including National champions, All-Americans, Footlocker finalists, and state champions. The events will definitely be spectator and track enthusiast friendly with the level of competition as well as some unique and exciting events as part of the meet. The featured event of the Gala will be the All-Star distance medley relay as the evening's final running event. The distance medley relay for the girls will have two stacked Virginia All-Star teams (led by Catherine White anchoring one of the relays) looking to push a team of stars from one high school in Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland as the Blazin' Raiders (club name) are gunning for the high school national record in the event of 11:33.42 set by Bay Shore High School of New York in 2004 at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Meanwhile, the DMR for the boys has stayed true to the original intentions of the event of regional and classification pride with teams from the AAA's Central, Eastern, Northern, and Northwest Region as well as two All-Star relays from Group AA and A. A total of seven milers with times of 4:16 or faster will be on the six relays in a star studded event. Now this weekend at the Gala, both will be battling together to bring home the All-Star DMR title for the Group AA boys.

Groups Coverage Egg Harbor Twp –As expected the Group 4 1600m races took center stage on Friday evening as Craig Forys took a crack at the record book and Danielle Tauro, Ashley Higginson  and Jillian Smith all took a shot at each other. The results were breathtaking as Forys ran all by himself to a record breaking 4:07.36 and the Southern Regional duo went 1 -2 (4:44.35 – 4:46.87) with Higginson 3rd (4:47.71) .  Tauro's mark is a MileSplit Network National LeaderThe Girls race saw all 6 MOC auto-qualifiers go under 5 minutes with Kim Standridge (4:55.99), Lauren Penney (4:58.69) and Janel Parker (4:59.33) all under the magic mark.Conversely, Forys ran his record totally solo with splits of 59.5, 63.1, 63.3 and 61.3. Showing once again that he is at an entirely different level than any other distance runner in NJ, Forys finished over 11 seconds ahead of runner up Andrew Brodeur (4:18.49).  Brodeur was the only other racer under 4:20. The other MOC qualifiers were Brian Leung (4:20.61), Christian Gonzalez (4:21.10), Kevin Cronin (4:22.47) and Robby Andrews (4:23.55) South Plainfield –Round 2 of the Cox vs Abney duel went to Antonio Abney in 47.43 to Charles Cox’s 47.48.
