    Deserving athletes for this week's MileStat.com AOW are Western Branch freshmen Aurora Scott and Brentsville junior Nick Gehlsen. Scott scorched the Bells Mills 5K Course at the Chesapeake Invitational in 18:53, while Gehlsen unexpectedly shocked everyone with a sub 16 performance at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

    This week's rankings has a few new #1's. The Brenstville boys have reclaimed their #1 spot in AA. Brentsville's Nick Gehlsen has moved ahead of Christiansburg's John Horst for the top spot among AA boys. Lake Braddock moves ahead of Western Albemarle as the top ranked girls team in the state. And for the first time ever, the private school rankings are 5 teams and 15 individuals deep.

  • 9/25-Defending AA State Champs Dallas dominates with 1-2-3 finish @ Lackawanna County

    Defending AA State Champs Dallas used a one-two-three punch to easily win the Lackawanna County Commissioners\' meet with 53 points. The team was paced by Lisa Giaconetti in 19:51. In the boys race, Honesdale tallied 57 points for the win behind the 16:40 2nd place of Sean Craig. Lakeland\'s Mark Bucklaw went 16:25 for the individual win.

  • 9/25-Hordusky, Gibson win individual titles as Youngsville guys, Villa Maria girls win @ Sharpsville

    The Villa Maria girls placed two in the top ten to get a 33 point win over McDowell. Neshannock's Kacey Gibson, a freshman, won the race by a ton. Fort Leboeuf's Bruce Hordusky ran a 15:56 to win the individual title, as the Youngsville boys tallied 94 points for a 16 point win.

    Liberty traveled to Bloomsburg University and ran off with two team titles. With a 5-6-9 finish in the boys race, led by Cris Pates in 17:06, the Lehigh Valley team beat Lewisburg 58-83. Wallenpaupack junior Kevin Sives won in 16:36. In the girls race, Shikellamy junior Lindsey Scheller ran 19:23 for the win. But Libery placed two in the top ten behind Erin Matyus' 5th place 20:14.

  • Eggleston returns, but Gehlsen shines for high-powered Brentsville

    The Wendy\'s Invitational held at McAlpine Greenway Park marked the return of 2003 AA 3200 outdoor state runner-up Pat Eggleston to the Brentsville boys\' lineup. His first race back seemingly gave his entire squad an energy boost, especially junior Nick Gehlsen. Gehlsen stole the thunder from AA #2 ranked teammate Eggleston as he posted AA\'s first sub 16 clocking of the season with his fifth place clocking of 15:56 and helped Brentsville return from Charlotte with the first place team trophy against some of North Carolina\'s best teams.

  • 9/25-Council Rock North boys hold off CR South as Mahoney-Pomerantz go 1-2

    Council Rock North\'s boys, the #5 ranked team in the Northeast, and #22 in the US, held off a challenge from sister school Council Rock South at their home invite, 63-79. North\'s John Mahoney and teammate Brandon Pomerantz went 1-2 in 16:00 and 16:07. North was missing two of their varsity seven because of the holidays. Sara Clemmer, Christopher Dock, won the girls race in 19:38, while Pennridge was four points better than Council Rock North in the team race, 91-95.

    They\'re back. Allentown Central Catholic stayed home in the Lehigh Valley and had two previously ranked Northeast teams come to them. They beat both. In the boys race, NE#9 Monsignor Farrell won the boys race by 37 over West Chester East, 2nd with 109. Central Bucks South\'s Kyle Murray (photo by Bob Rodgers) went 15:41 to win. And 14-year-old Neely Spence made her high school debut - in the college open 6k race because she is homeschooled - and finished 4th on the 6k course.

  • 9/25-Crofford & Craig Miller win individual races, Cedar Cliff boys, Parkland girls @ Carlisle Inv.

    NE#3 St. Basil girls did not have a great day, as the Parkland girls won the hot race, and the Cedar Cliff boys captured the Challenge boys race. Big Spring sophomore Lara Crofford won the championship race in 18:34. Craig and Brad Miller went 1-2 with Cedar Cliff\'s Pat Caufield 3rd. The Millers ran 15:46 and 15:47, with Brad looking back to ensure that he didn\'t get passed by Caufield, who went 15:50.

    Longwood University\' women\'s cross country team totaled 17 points to finish first among two NCAA Division I teams at the Greensboro Invitational cross country meet Saturday in North Carolina. In Greensboro, Longwood was led by freshman Kristin Novara/Winchester (Millbrook) who finished fourth overall among 101 runners with her new school-record time of 19:46 in the 5K (3.1 mile) race won in 18:38.

    Liberty freshmen Josh McDougal simply does not understand the concept of losing. Not that it is a bad quality as McDougal went on to win his third consecutive major invitational collegiate victory in as many races in his young career at the prestigious and competitive Paul Short Invitational. Considered annually as one of the premier collegiate cross country meets on the East Coast with many of the nation\'s best teams and individuals competing in the event, Liberty\'s McDougal made easy work of the competition as he blazed to a scorching 8 kilometer time of 23:43.53.

    Can John Horst of Christiansburg bring another Bristol Cross title to the State of Virginia? You can rest assured that the #1 ranked AA runner in the State will give it his all. On Wednesday for a warm-up, Horst cruised to a first place finish at the River Ridge District Preview Meet. Last year his former teammates took first in the boys and girls large school division. Two-time Bristol Cross champion Kirsten Hagen set the course record as she cruised to the finish in 18:29.00. Justin Hatch won with a time of 16:07 on the 3 mile Steele Creek Course.     The College of William & Mary women will be making one of their first trips to the Paul Short Run in recent history as they headline a group of Virginia schools competing in the competitive collegiate meet. Paul Short also will be the highly anticipated debut race of University of Richmond freshmen Caitlyn Chock. The women\'s programs from Christopher Newport University, Liberty University, Lynchburg College, and the University of Richmond will also be in racing action at Paul Short.

    Some of Virginia\'s best collegiate programs in cross country will be venturing to compete in the Lehigh University hosted Paul Short Invitational in one of the Mid-Atlantic\'s most competitive collegiate meets.     Pre-season AA #1 ranked individual Pat Eggleston of Brentsville will be making his senior season debut after missing the first few meets due to injury at the Wendy\'s Invitationl in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Brentsville boys and girls will try their luck at the fast McAlpine Park 5K course in traditionally one of the better meets in the South. Currently, the Brentsville boys and girls have aspirations for strong finishes in this November\'s Group AA State race.

    This past weekend, Clemson hosted their annual invitational, held on campus. The girls ran a 5K. This meet counted twice for South Carolina teams. The NCAA counts the Clemson Invite as an actual meet, and then takes the teams from South Carolina and scores them as a smaller meet.

Just three points separated Eleanor Roosevelt MD from both West Chester Henderson and Gwynedd Mercy. Great Valley girls Unionville boys take DII races, while the St. Hubert\'s girls and Ridgewood NJ boys take the DI crowns.

    The Oakton Girls Cross Country squad remained unbeaten in 2004 with a win in the seeded division at the Lake Fairfax Invitational hosted by Oakton on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA. 40 schools competed in the meet held on one of the most challenging courses on the East coast. The course was modified as a result of heavy rain from Hurricane Ivan.

    In one of the most competitive in-state meets that will be held this season, the William & Mary men and University of Virginia respectively won team titles at the Lou Onesty Invitiational, while the two race winners were two very talented freshmen.     The Lake Braddock and Midlothian High School cross country squads did not come to Hawaii just to kick back on beautiful beaches with their feet in the sand and a cold drink in their hand. They also came to kick some butt at the Iolani Cross Country Invitational.   • Lake Fairfax Cross Country Invitational Preview

    Oakton High School (Vienna, VA) will host the 6th Annual Lake Fairfax Invitational on Saturday, September 18, 2004 in Reston, VA. Heavy rain is predicted for the event which was cancelled last year due to a Hurricane Isabel. The course has been redesigned and offers many challenges including two creek crossings and multiple hills. 38 schools and over 1500 athletes are expected to participate in the invitational which begins at 9:00 a.m. with 9th grade races.

  • 9/11-LaSalle boys and O'Hara girls take first Triple Threat @ Belmont Plateau

    This is a concept that will surely add teams as word gets out. It\'s a great way to start the season with varying distances and a unique scoring system that keeps the race in doubt for awhile. But that aside, LaSalle absolutely took control on race 2 and won by over two minutes combined over Archbishop Carroll\'s boys. In the girls race, Cardinal O\'Hara was just over a minute better than St. Basil.

  • 9/11-North Allegheny takes girls, North Hills the boys @ Red, White & Blue Classic @ Schenley Oval

    North Hills still has a front-runner, Josh Eddy, senior, who ran 15:52 at Schenley Oval to win by 13 seconds. North Hills captured the boys team title. North Allegheny won the girls race by 111 over Mount Lebanon thanks in large part to junior Kelly O'Brien, first in 19:18 and Michelle Diez, also a junior, 3rd in 19:34.

  • CNU Men Receive National Ranking Votes!

    The Christopher Newport University men\'s cross country team received great news today. The first NCAA Division III rankings were released for the 2004 cross country season and they included the CNU men receiving 3 national votes. Last year\'s NCAA DIII South/Southeast Regional champion, Emory University (GA), was ranked just behind Christopher Newport with two votes. A promising sign for a young CNU squad, which is dominated primarily by sophomores and freshmen.

  • Radford Fall Classic: Horst wins again

    The 15th annual Radford Fall Classic was held in spite of the flooding caused by Hurricane Francis. The normal starting and finishing area had been under water from flooding by the New River and was still a muddy mess the day of the race. However, the Radford officials did an outstanding job of pulling off this meet by making alternate plans on Thursday and completely changing the course. The changes created problems, but overall the meet was another huge success.

    The Newport News Invitational showcased two of the state\'s best cross country runners in Woodside senior Derrick Robbins and Western Branch freshmen Aurora Scott. Robbins, a Group AAA state title favorite this fall, made easy work of the competition as he won in a time of 15:28. Scott showed that she can live up to all of the hype as she posted one of the fastest times ever recorded on the Newport News Park 5K course with a sizzling time of 18:09.

    Traditionally a mid-week meet in early September, this year\'s Monroe Parker Invitational was held on a Saturday. One thing that has not changed about the Monroe Parker meet is that it gave a good indication of the exciting cross country that is ahead from the top teams and individuals in the Northern Region. Melissa Dewey, the Hayfield senior who is one of the favorites for this fall\'s Group AAA state cross country crown, scorched the Burke Lake 2.98 mile course in a 86 second margin win of 17:11 in her season opener.

    Several Virginia schools invaded Pennsylvania this past weekend and came home with some serious hardware on the hilly 8050 course. Leading the way was Christopher Newport University who placed their top 4 in the top 15 places to win the race in a score of 58 points. Leading the way for CNU was Cary Chaffee who posted a time of 26:43 to take runner-up honors in the field of 208 runners.

    Blue Mountain swept both team championships, with the boys taking Tamaqua by 24 points, and the girls narrowly escaping Tamaqua by just five points. But it was Tamaqua runners that set course records in each race.

    It took one meet for a top PA team to face an upset. Two-time defending state AAA girls champs Hatboro-Horsham was beaten handily by St. Basil, and the Hatboro did win the boys\' race by just four points over a Greg Thomas-less Cardinal O\'Hara, tallying 64 points..
