Everything is sunburned. Three days and nights at the State Finals will do that to you. Here's my thoughts and views on the end of the season. Well, at least some of them

Peter Habegger goes 24-08 for a US#2 Long Jump. A Regan wins the Pole Vault, while another takes second. A Hickory pole vaulter wins the state title, but it\'s not who you think. Two sophomores show their older competitors the way to Triple Jump. And another Radocaj wins the Javelin. Just business as usual in PA. Cedar Crest\'s Peter Habegger launched a US #2 Long Jump 24-08.00. In AA, Samuel Aleshinolye of Milton Hershey leapt 22-00.50. Easton\'s Lindsay Regan cleared the magic 13-0 in the Pole Vault for the third time this season in sometimes swirling winds. She missed on three attempts to break the US National sophomore record of 13-4. Courtney Regan took 2d with an 11-06 effort. The upset of the day came in the boys AAA Pole Vault, as Andrew Rademacher, in his final PIAA performance, was beaten by teammate Eric Sparks, a junior. Sparks graciously referred to Rachemacher\'s performance as \"a bad day\", but nonetheless, had to PR by 3\" at 15-09 to claim his first state title. Both cleared 15-09.

Jannea Bridgeford, Upper Darby defends on title and adds a new one. Knowledge Timmons does the same in AAA boys. Andre Broussard gets two golds. And Jasmine Rogers takes home two individual titles with 100 and 100 Hurdles win.

West Mifflin overcame two rough handoffs in the 4x100, Conestoga took the wide-open girls AAA 4x400, while Elk County Catholic took two seconds to Gwynedd-Mercy; and Lewisburg boys posted the US#2, Haverford girls the US#5 4x800\'s.

Kate Vernon, Gwynedd Mercy, wins both AA 800 and 1600 races, while Lewisburg\'s Chris Spooner accomplishes the same feat in AA boys. Both athletes also anchored their teams to wins in the 4x800 earlier in the day. Monster races from sophomore Craig Miller, Manheim Township, in the AAA 1600, and Ian Fitzgerald, North Hills, in the AAA boys 3200. Included are some splits and race flow descriptions for the 800, 1600 and 3200 races. Times in a few of the races were among the best in years.

According to the schedule on PIAA.org, there are two more broadcasts of the PIAA State Championships on PCN: Monday, May 31 at 9:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m.

Some surprisingly good times by freshman in 4A Guys and Capone of Towson and Sinclair of Montgomery Blair almost get under 11.

Three field State Meet records fell during the first day\'s competition, one of them a US#3. Ryan Whiting, the Central Dauphin junior, uncorked a 193-02, an improvement of over eight feet on the 1985 AAA record set by Mark White of Upper Saint Clair. In the Javelin, two juniors went head-to-head, with last year\'s state champ, Osayi Osunde of Central Columbia, taking 2nd this year to the new record-holder in AA, Chad Radgowski of South Park. Radgowski\';s throw of 207-02 was over 11 feet better than the record Osunde set in 2003. The third record was by Williamsport senior Ruby Radocah, who heaved the Javelin, into a wind, 158-00. The leading state champ candidates ran controlled 4x800\'s. Gwynedd-Mercy cruised to a 9:40.29. Their main challengers in AA, Elk County Catholic, won their heat in 9:31.71. In AAA, Allentown Central catholic, Henderson and Haverford all ran relatively hard in the first heat. Haverford split 2:18.9, 2:22.0, 2:15.0, 2:20.9. The heat also included a 2:15.3 split from Upper Saint Clair\'s Katie Orchowski, a sophomore, to bring them back and get them into the final. The second heat was relatively relaxed, as Radnor, McDowell, Hatboro (the favorites) and Perkiomen Valley came in at 9:27-28. That two seconds a lap difference in effort could cost a team or two in tomorrow\'s finals. More...

Alex Woodley, 71, Coach of Philadelphia Track Club, Dies Alex Woodley, who coached and mentored many Olympic gold-medal sprinters in the 1960's and 1970's as head of the Philadelphia Pioneer Club, died on Saturday at his home in Philadelphia. He was 71. The cause was a heart attack, his wife, Jean, said. Woodley's athletes who won Olympic gold medals included Paul Drayton, Steve Riddick, Charlie Greene, Mel Pender, Herman Frazier and Hasely Crawford. Other leading athletes from the club included John Carlos, Ivory Crockett, Curtis Mills, Edwin Roberts, Tom McLean and Benn Fields.

We have published previews of the AA and AAA girls and boys competition at the PIAA State Championships, set for this Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.

The boy\'s 1600 in 2003 saw the emergence of Manheim Township\'s Craig Miller, who set a US freshman class record of 4:14.26 in the finals. He ran a 4:14.59 last week to get here. Twin brother Brad was just behind him. Pacing shouldn\'t be a problem, as West Mifflin senior Mike Booth, who shocked the Baldwin Invitational crowd with a 4:07.71 win over Ian Fitzgerald a few weeks ago, will be out to add a state championship to his resume. Fitzgerald, the North Hills senior and defending 3200 champ who won this year\'s Penn Relays 3000, is the hands-on favorite in the eight-lapper. More...

Defending 200 champ Krista Simkins of Wissahickon is out of the 200 after scratching from the final at the District 1 meet. She is in the 100, but will face defending champ Jannea Bridgeford of Upper Darby, who has been having an incredible season, along with Great Valley junior Janessa Murphy. Bridgeford should be the favorite in the 200 as well.

We\'ll be watching over two days to compare the distance races, especially on the boys\' side. Lewisburg\'s Chris Spooner is one of the best distance runners to come out of PA (you\'ll have to follow the Duke Blue Devils next year to catch him). He ran an 8:53.46 two-mile in Hartford, CT a few weeks ago, and has opted to leave the 3200 title he won in 2003 open to someone else. That someone will probably be Westmont Hilltop senior David Mock, who is bound for William & Mary. More...

An event that brings all types and ages of track and field athletes is coming to Greenville. The 2004 South Carolina Open and Master\'s Track and Field Classic is set for May 29 at Furman University\'s Irwin Belk Track and Field complex. Furman is located off Poinsett Highway in Greenville. Eastside High School is hosting the meet. Ed Boehmke and Adrian Craven are the meet directors.

Alyssa Burkert-Stevens is no secret in the Central Florida road racing scene. The 12 year old has been regularly beating women twice her size for years!

New blood and experienced vets competed under hot, humid conditions, and each had success. Young talent took championships in the girls AAA 800 and 1600. Ryan Whiting of Central Dauphin is throwing better each week. They\'re back! Craig and Brad Miller, the talented sophomore twins from Manheim Township, helped get their 4x800 into the state meet in AAA, but also showed they\'re once again contender in the open events. Knowledge Timmons, William Penn (York), took the 100 and 200. St. Joe\'s recruit Adriene Beltz, Hamburg, posted a 1600-3200 double. Ashley Hodge, a Carlisle senior, went triple. More...

Reid Wilson is a rising senior at Spring Valley High School. Wilson finished second at the 2003 State Cross-Country Championships, helping Spring Valley capture the team title with a finishing time of 15:44.99. Wilson finished first in the mile (4:19.79) at the 2004 State Track and Field Championships. Wilson placed fourth in the 4A 3200 (9:54.21) State Meet event.

Auston Papay looks like he's getting a good handle on the Javelin just as well as his Shot and Discus. His three throws, the first two District Records, 190-06, 64-11 and 181-11 were a combined 53 (or so) feet better than his nearest competition. More...

Hamburg distance ace Adriene Beltz, the 2003 AA State Cross Country Champion, has signed to continue her running career at St. Joseph's University. St. Joe's also signed CB East distance runner Val Myers, and sprint/jump specialist Jordan Teuber of Nazareth Academy.

Krista Simkins, the junior Wissahickon sprint star, apparently reinjured her right hamstring during the week leading up to the 5/21-22 District One Championships @ Coatesville. In the 'no scratch' meet, she advanced from Friday's trials in the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x400. In her first race Saturday, the 100 Semis, she was noticbly limping as she finished, but advanced to the finals. Simkins did run the 100 finals, and finished sixth with a state qualifying time. She was set to anchor the 4x100, but a baton drop cost the team a shot to improve on last year's runner-up at States to Upper Darby. She scratched the 200 finals - the event she won in 2003 at States over Tiffany Abney. She did not run on the 4x400 relay that did advance to the state meet. Wissahickon finished 2nd in that event in 2003 to the Abney-anchored Merion Mercy Academy squad. If she improves before next week's state meet, should could run the 4x400 in addition to the 100.

Xavier Carter took the All-Time State 200 Meter back today, running a time of 20.49 at the AAU State Qualifier in Orlando.

Erin Hannon of Bradford, swept her four events, winning the Long and Triple Jumps at 17-08 an d 37-09.50; clearing 5-04 in the High Jump, and going 16.16 in the 100 Hurdles (15.91 Trials). More...

Lewisburg won the boys and girls titles, each by a comfortable margin. Point machine Chris Spooner obviously could only contribute to less than a third of the points. Not to worry, his mates on the fastest 4x800 squad in the state went two-three behind him in the open 800. More...

Allentown Central Catholic\'s Frances Koons posted a two-day 2:14.28 - 4:49.85 - 10:35.25 triple + anchored her winning 4x800 to a 9:28.43. The 1600 is a District 11 record. The Regan sisters went one-two in the Pole Vault. Parkland\'s Scott Ragosta cleared the magic 15-0 to take the AAA Pole Vault. Boys\' AAA District records came from Steve Stern of Parkland in the 400, Rich Ryan of Easton in the 1600, and the Southern Lehigh 4x400 boys. In AA boys, sprinter Brandon Carter of Bethlehem Catholic went 11.14, 22.42, and helped the 4x400 take a win in 3:26.64. For the AA girls, Samantha Snukis of Nativity had a nice double, 45.37 300 Hurdles and 59.50 400. More...

Crestwood\'s Elizabeth Drazdowski was less than a second away from a triple sweep of the distance races. She took the 800 in 2:22.64 and the 1600 in 5:15.50, but came up just short (11:38.09) to Brenae Edwards of Hazleton in the 3200, who won in 11:37.96. Wyoming Valley West\'s Paul Connolly won the Javelin with a toss of 181-08.

Less than a dozen schools remain in AAA status in District 6, but that doesn\'t stop them from throwing in some of the best performances in the state. The Gehrets of Altoona (mom and dad) were coached by retiring Tom Musselman, who, after 30 years at the helm, is calling it a career this season. Two of the Gehret daughters are heading for states. The youngest is making quite a name for herself as a sophomore. Rachel (in photo) hopped back and forth between the Triple Jump and High jump for more than an hour and proceeded to win both, the former with a 36-11 effort, and the latter a 5-06 clearance to hold off junior Kristin Johnson of Somerset, who PRed on two of her final three jumps at the same height. I was able to make the District 6 meet in Altoona on Thursday (best high school facility I have ever seen), but because of moving my daughter\'s apartment and some morning thunder and rain in Shippensburg, I decided to get home to catch up on meet results. I\'ll be at the District 1 2nd day on Saturday.

It was an extremely tough decision and after much debate and deliberation, we have come to a decision. The winners are....

Nicole Smith, the McDowell scoring machine, churned out points in her penultimate district championships. Her McDowell teammates also qualified all three relays. Teammate Alexandra Acker, just a freshman, cleared 11-9 to win the Pole Vault and qualify for her first state meet. McDowell\'s girls tallied 177 points, 57 better than their nearest competition. All-American, and Belmont-Plateau course record holder Steve Hallinan of Cardinal O'Hara will join former O'Hara star Sean Duffy at American University inWashington, DC.

Margo Robinson is a senior at Gardner-Webb University. GWU is located in Boiling Springs, N.C. and is a D-I member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Robinson will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in May 2005. While at James Island High School (Charleston) Robinson captured three long jump state titles.

With blazing temperatures expected on Saturday, competition will be smoking - literally. An unexpected small field for 4A North Boys and a very deep 2A North Girls field should be the highlights of the meet.

It poured and howled in western and central PA Tuesday, but District 7 AA still got in their meet at South Beaver HS. District 2 got theirs in as well at North Pocono HS. Results for both are now on. The District 6 AA meet in Altoona wasn't as fortunate, and was postponed until May 19th.

Shippensburg released their T&F signees this week, and included are North Penn middle-distance runner Matt Krum, and Pennridge distance runner Jon Coopersmith. More...

Brian Raymond is walking on Colorado State\'s running program in the fall as a freshman. Raymond, a senior at Spring Valley also applied and was accepted to North Carolina State, Virginia Tech and Clemson. \"These schools interested me because they have had my major - Fisheries Science/Biology,\" said Raymond. \"And they all have good cross-country/track teams.\"

State champs Jenny Barringer, Nicole Schappert, Jackie Areson, and Laura Bowerman square off in the mile Saturday night at the RunFlorida All-Comers meet at Oak Hall School in Gainesville, FL. Meet preview by Ricky Quintana.

The Javelin saw a meet record of 192-10 by Lake Lehman\'s Brandon Burkhardt. The Dallas distance crew is sending a relay and an individual from the group to States, They took the 4x800 in a meet record 9:42.21. Lisa Giacometti also ran an 11:00.34 to take the 3200. Quaker Valley coach Bill Viccari reports that between the rain delays, there was a pretty incredible track meet at the District 7 AA Championships @ South Beaver HS. \"The race of the day (but I am biased) was the girl\'s 100 hurdles with Jasmine Rogers facing off against Mycaiah Clemons. McGuffey\'s Ellen Metz went 140-11 with the Javelin. In the boys competition, South Park\'s Sean Strauman took the 400 in 49.97 and the 800 in 1:57.07. South Side Beaver\'s Andrew Gergen won both hurdles, going 14.97 and 39.84. And South Park thrower Chad Radgowski threw the Jav 196-10. More...

Schenley sophomore Kaetlyn Brown showed the future of the sprints in Pittsburgh is on fast feet with three wins of 12.76, 26.24 and 57.95. Tom Jeck, the Allderdice senior, ran away with three titles, the 800 in 2:05.73, the 1600 in 4:41.32, and the 3200 in 10:43.31. Jeck also helped his team win the 4x800 in 8:42.32. More...

North Central PA - Susquehanna Valley & Northern Tier: The Chris Spooner-anchored Lewisburg 4x800 crushed their own meet record by nine seconds, and nearly took over the top spot in the US with a 7:45.85 at the Susquehanna Valley Conferences in Montoursvile on 5/15. And that\'s not all Key did. Plus some nice Javs in Wyalusing. More...

Breaking the meet record in the 4x55 hurdle relay at the Nike Indoor Championships, that took place from March 13-14 in Landover, MD was just a start for Westside\'s boy\'s team as they broke the two-year old record.

South Central PA - Lebanon-Lancaster & Mid-Penn: At the Lebanon-Lancaster League Championships, The Miller twins (Craig and Brad) of Manheim Central (now sophomores), have been active as of late. At Mid-Penn, great field activity and some strong middle distance and distance races by veterans and newcomers. More...

Northwest PA - Metro, Redbank, Erie, Mercer: Earlier in the week, McDowell\'s Nicole Smith took her usual winning steps. In Redbank on the 13th, Gretchen Colwell of the host school, went 40-07.75 in the Shot Put. In the first day of the Erie County Champs at Harbor Creek HS, Fairview went 9:48.6 in the 4x800 while the General McLane boys notched an 8:03. Tim Harris, fourth on the all-time 800 meter list in Florida, is nearing a college decision. We will have the exclusive first announcement once Tim\'s choice has been made.

Summerville alumna Precious Akins threw the discus 169-09 feet, a personal best by more than one foot and a half at the SEC Championships in Oxford, MS. Akins, a freshman at South Carolina finished fourth in the women\'s discus.

Dave and Carol Grantges, a couple who are fanatical about their track & field, give us a summary about the big things from this year\'s state meet--maybe the most impressive field of Florida athletes ever in a single season.

Three-time All-American Ali Henderson (Parkville, MO) showed the steel that had earned her three All-American accolades as she raced to All-East honors as 2004 CAA Champion William and Mary women's track and field competed Friday at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

reshman Keith Bechtol (Alexandria, VA) won the 10,000m, leading three All-East Tribe performers in the race, as 2004 CAA Champion William and Mary men's track and field competed Friday at the IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

PennTrackXC.com could be entering its last month online (but there's a glimmer of hope)

The Philly Public League held their Divisional meets 5/11 and 5/12. On Tuesday at Roxborough HS, Divisions B and C competed. Central dominated the Division B boys and girls meets. Dobbins captured both Division C titles at stake. Gratz did likewise in Division A, while Overbrook\'s girls and Engineering & Science girls won Division D.

At the PCL Northern Division Champs on 5/10, LaSalle nipped Archbishop Ryan by just two points, 161-159. Bonner won the boys' Southern Division with 144-1/2. O'Hara was second with 129-1/2. In the Girls Northern Division on 5/11, also at LaSalle, Ryan easlily took top honors with 181-1/2 points with just three individual wins, but a lot of depth. At the Southern Division Girls meet at Widener on 5/11, Cardinal O'Hara outscored West Catholic by 70 points.

What hasn\'t Nicole Leach done during this remarkable junior season? Well, just more of the same, and the same is excellent. She won the 400 in 54.75 after a 55.20 qualifier. She took 3rd in the 200 in 24.98, with qualifiers of 25.76 and 25.48. And she helped her 4x400 to a 2nd place 3:57.76. Teammate Latavia Thomas took the 800 2:13.03. Archbishop Ryan\'s Sara Brown was 6th in the 100, going 12.85. And the Ryan boys took 4th in the 4x800 in 8:15.38.

USC junior Chelsea Hammond was recently named United States Track Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week for NCAA D-I track and field.

Kelli Buck(#9)will try and lead her team to victory at the Harford County Track Championships which will be held Thursday and Friday at CMW.

The South Carolina State Track and Field Championships took place from May 7-8 at Spring Valley High School in Columbia. The 3A/4A portion of the meet started on Friday and concluded early Saturday afternoon. A and 2A action took place on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Holding the pole at 12-4 on a 13\' 150 Carbon, Lindsay Regan came within a half-inch of the PA state record set by Emily Tharpe in 2001, and 2\" of the US sophomore class record, clearing 13-02 from 7 lefts to win the Lehigh Valley Conference Championship at Allen HS in Allentown. And it\'s the new US#1 vault, with only one other girls over 13. It marks a two-inch improvement on her 13-0 mark May 5th at the Liberty Last Chance Meet in Bethlehem. Observers said she had room to spare, and nearly made 13-04.5 on both her second and third attempts in a cross wind.

Virginia Tech director of track and field and cross country Dave Cianelli has announced the signing of Western Albermarle High School\'s Jessica Fanning to a national letter of intent today, May 11. The latest addition to this year\'s recruiting class will come to Tech as one of the top middle distance talents in the state.

Jeff Crane is a senior at Wade Hampton High School, located in Greenville. Crane talks about his tenure as a General and the teams five consecutive years as state champions.

Fleet Feet Greenville, located on Augusta Road is hosting a monitoring and performance clinic on May 12, from 7-9 p.m. Nike Timing is sponsoring the event, where Coach Roy Benson is speaking.

In one of the best prep 2-miles in history, Chris Spooner joined four other runners under 9 minutes for 2-miles at the Hartford Invitational, taking 4th in 8:56.56. Spooner\'s run is a new state record in the two-mile, eclipsing Mike Connelly\'s, (Upper Perkiomen) 8:58.9 3200 set in 1983. Spooner\'s 8:56.56 converts to about 8:53.5 for 3200.

The next generation of athletes shined brightly today at Bolles. The Middle School State Championship produced a whopping 16 New Meet Records and that\'s not including new marks for the 3000M, 1500M, and 200M Hurdles.

Woodlawn destroys the boys field while the girls championship was still up in the air with two events to go. Sam Henry and Ron Bias lead the boys varsity, but even more impressive was Woodlawns complete domination of boys and girls varsity and junior varsity races.

The Loucks Games held in New York saw a southern invasion for this year's meet with a talented contigency from Virginia coming to compete. Meanwhile, looking for a meet with great competition to replace the absence of the Southern Track Classic, more than a handful of distance stars from Virginia went as far north as Connecticut to compete in the Hartford Public Invitational.

Frances Fox, Episcopal Academy, took the High Jump, clearing 5-0, The Long Jump with a 15-09.75 effort, and the Triple Jump, leaping 32-00.50. Hanamirian, also of Episcopal Academy, posted a 1:00.3 400 win.

Pennridge athletes Shane Tobin (22.9), Jon Coopersmith (1:58.1) and Scott Sherwood (14-00) all won events at their home invitational. Duane Hynes, Central Bucks East, took the High Jump (6-0) and the Long Jump (20-07.50). His teammate, Brad Vierling, threw the Discus 156-05; while Quakertown's Tony Mitchell tossed the Jav 175-00.

John Vellenoweth, Linsly School (West Virginia), won three events, a 14-0 Pole Vault,5-08 High Jump, and 41.4 300 Hurdles. Teammate Mark Plumby also took, three, the 110 Hurdles in 14.7, the 100 in 11.5, and the 200 in 23.2.

That unbelievable 1600 wasn\'t the only record falling at the 31st Baldwin Invitational. Male athlete of the meet Calvin Littlejohn, Butler, took three events, while Female Athlete of the Meet Nicole Smith of McDowell also won three events. Auston Papay merely shrugged off numerous rain delays to win two events. Seven guys busted 2 minutes behind a 1:55.84 by Shaler\'s John Balouris. Katie Orchowski, Upper Saint Clair, won the 800 in 2:19.14 after anchoring her team to a come-from-behind win in the 4x800 in 9:29.75. Ringold\'s Bev Rogers sent the Javelin flying 146-10 in cold, windy conditions. Valley\'s Mycaiah Clemons went 14.51 in the 100 Hurdles, and took the 200 in 25.56 seconds. More...

In what will long be remembered as one of the best 1600 in PA high school history, West Mifflin senior Mike Booth not only beat Ian Fitzgerald in a head-to-head duel, but the meet record of one Sam Bair of Shaler. Booth\'s 4:07.77, and Fitzgerald\'s 4:08.37 are the 2nd and 3rd PA high school times under 4:10 this season, following Chris Spooner\'s winning mile at the Penn Relays. Fitzgerald immediately went to the front and set the pace, hoping to run 4:08. Booth tucked in behind for two laps, and had his sights set on a PR of 4:12. He passed Fitzgerald after the 600 meter mark \"because he has better leg speed than me, and I just couldn\'t wait for him to use it.\" But use it he did, and Fitzgerald almost caught Booth at the line. When Booth looked up, expected to see 4:12, and was shocked at the 4:07 on the clock. His splits were 62.5, 63.1, 61.8 and 60.3. Brookville senior Brent Puller cleared 13-03 for the Pole Vault win. Clarion senior Dave Larson won two events, taking the Discus with a toss of 158-09, and the Shot Put at 47-01. Kenny Foster, Brookville, won the 1600 and 3200, while Clarion\'s Corey Corbett took the 100 and 20 sprints. Clarion junior Molly Smathers won the 400 in 1:01.8, and the 800 in 2:29.4.

Wisshahickon\'s Krista Simkins 11.7-23.4 double broke her own meet records. She also helped her team\'s 4x100 go 47.2 and 4x400 clock 3:50.5, both meet records. Sirita Lachesis, Wissahickon, set a meet record 2:12.1 in the 800. In the boys competition, Kevin Clark of Hatboro-Horsham cleared the elite 15-0 mark in the Pole Vault. Julian Edwards, McDevitt, won the 200 in 22.0 and the 400 in 50.0. And Steve Tyson, Upper Merion, won the Shot and Discus, while Scott Simonovich, North Penn, was triumphant in both hurdle events.

Bensalem's relays are fine-tuning at a quick pace with 42.72 and 3:19.69 4x100, 4x400 wins. William Tennent's Nicole Kulp moved up to 4th in PA with an 18-04 Long Jump. She also triple-jumped 35-10.50. Council Rock South teammates MacKenna McClure and Andrew Dubs traded wins and 2nd, with McClure taking the Discus 165-08, and Dubs going 55-04.25 in the Shot Put.

The 2004 South Carolina High School Track and Field State Championships starts on May 7 at Spring Valley High School, located in Columbia.

Amanda Dortch recently finished her first year of running at TL Hanna High School. Dortch is a seventh grader at McCants Middle School.

John Blackburn was the head field judge at the 2004 Taco Bell Track and Field Classic. Blackburn will be the head field judge at the State Championships this weekend. Blackburn is one of 10 people that will serve as International Technical Official (ITO) at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Jennifer Hitt is a senior at Hillcrest High School. Hitt recently signed an NLI with D-II Anderson College. Hitt qualified for the 800 (seeded third) and 1600-meter (seeded fifth) events at this weekend\'s State Championship.

I know I am missing so many college performances. Maybe someday, with enough subscribers, I will have the staff (more than one) to add coverage of our former HS stars. But I did take a minute to go through the 1500-5k-10k Eastern Track Lists published by Walt Murphy, and noticed some athletes you\'d like to know are running quite fast this spring.

Thursday May 6, 2004 isn\'t just the last day of Friends, it\'s bigger. It\'s the 50th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister\'s historic sub-4-minute-mile. Walt Murphy has provided locations where recognitions (and races) will occur, plus links to more to read on the topic. Plus, Bannister will be one of several stories featured on \"The Barrier Breakers\" on ESPN Classic, at 8, 9, 10 and 11 p.m. ET. Enjoy.

Easton sophomore Lindsay Regan, a two-time PA state champ and this year\'s Penn Relays champ in the Pole Vault, cleared a major milestone Wednesday May 5 at the Liberty Last Chance Meet in Bethlehem. She made the first 13\' vault off her six left approach. The mark is currently US#2. Regan made two tries at 13-2.50, but retired because of some shin pain.

Thunder and lightnening couldn't stop Lauren Capone of Towson from leading her Towson teammates to wins in the 4x800 and 3200 meter runs. Great competition in the boys 4x800 and 3200 runs made for exciting viewing.

The sophomore class in western PA is getting a lot of attention, including Bradford's Erin Hannon. Her best triple-jump prior to Tuesday in a dual meet was 36-05.25 at the Indoor Championships. Her PR now is 38-08, which, if it had happened in an invitational, would be leading the state.

Wissahickon senior Alex Baptiste has selected Georgetown University to continue her academic and athletic careers. Baptiste has been a mainstay of the leading Wissahickon relays squads, and excelled in the Triple Jump and sprints. Her 37-10.25 PR triple came at this year's Indoor Champs, and she ran 57.80 at the May 1 Colonial Classic at Plymouth Whitemarsh. Wissahickon's 3:50.74 4x400 is 2nd in PA this season.

Council Rock South thrower Andrew Dubs has commited to the University of Connecticut (don\'t ask for B-ball tickets). Dubs has put the Shot 58-03.25 (Penn Relays) and thrown the Discus 161-0.

Here are the numbers: 11.90, 23.79 (US#3), 54.93 (US#10). Here\'s the person responsible for those gaudy stats: Krista Simkins. The Wissahickon junior cruised at high speed through the hyper-speed meet (just over two hours for track events) and set a meet record in the 100, 200 and 400. Hometown Chanel Williams ran a blistering 44.31 300 Hurdles. For the boys, Andrew Fries of McDevitt uncorked a 190-07 Javelin, a meet record.
