Not much of a break for Oxford's Drew Eckman, but he came off an NIC 2nd place in the 400 indoor, to take the first win of the outdoor season in 47.69. Tyree Suber, Glen Mills, rebounded from a tough indoor finale to go 59-07.25 to take the Shot Put. Adam Breisch won the Mile by .01 in 4:21.56 over Lewisburg's Chris Spooner. Bradford hurdler Shawn Colligan took the 300 version in 38.43, while Martin Luther King's Dior Lowry took the 110 Hurdles in a quick 14.66. Junior Steve Hallinan,Cardinal O'Hara, posted a quick 9:23.03 in the 3200. PA's girls' relays continue to excel, with five teams logging nationally elite times in the DMR, led by Hatboro-Horsham in a meet record of 12:21.59. This spring will mark the end of Edra Finley\'s decorated high school track & field career--a career that began with two All-State finishes as a seventh grader and may climax with another team championship, five more golds, and even state records in each event she contests.

In what started off looking to be what has become typical late March track meet invitational weather on an annual basis with dreary, wet, and cold weather actually turned out to be a beautiful day. Early morning rains stopped and the sunshine showed it\'s face occassionally at the Manchester Relays as some great early season performances were put out by local Richmond area high school athletes and teams.

A wide range of criteria was used to select each respective athlete such as season best, consistency, performance in big meets, etc. To give more athletes recognition, we decided to limit each athlete/relay to only one selection each. Even with that rule, I still shake my head in dismay that I have to leave off a lot of deserving individuals and relays off the team. But that shows that Virginia truly is one of the top track states in the nation with a great depth of talented athletes.

Williams capped off an outstanding freshman season for the Wolfpack by placing in a tie for third in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The former high school national champion is setting the bar even higher this season.

As a multiple All-American in the weight and hammer throws, Dickerson is a strong favorite for the individual title once again this season. Being part of one of the top throwing programs in the country, Dickerson hopes to lead the Gators to a national title.

The University of Florida Women proved that they are indeed a national power, with a second place showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The 2003 NCAA Indoor Champion in the pole vault nearly broke the collegiate record with his clearance over 19-feet. The senior All-American from Washington looks forward to an even better performance outdoors.

There will be a major change in the air this season which will include adding regional qualifying meets, placing greater emphasis on the conference championships, dramatically increasing the field sizes for the 2003 Division I NCAA Outdoor Championships and pushing the national meet back one week.

Pelham senior Aaron Jones lept six feet in February to place third in the 6A Men's high jump. By finishing in the top three, Jones earned All-State honors for the first time in his career. This spring he'll try to add two more All-State medals to his trophy rack-- in the men's high jump and as a multievent athlete in the AHSAA State Decathlon

Ryan Deak's days as a Floridian are coming to a close. The nationally ranked junior will be moving out to Colorado following this season. But don't think for a second the move has anything to do with the recent incident at Maclay resulting in Ryan's dismissal from the team or gossip-fest that ensued.

The state of Virginia surely made it\'s presence felt at the fifth annual Nike Indoor Championships, held at the Prince George County\'s Sports and Learning Complex. Over the two day contested national meet, seven national titles and dozens of All-American medals were brought home by Virginians.

While a smaller group up Virginians headed even farther north to compete at the New York Armory for the NSIC, the other national indoor championship meet, a talented and competitive group it was.

Grissom junior Dominique Robinson has won three of the four 6A State shot put championships she\'s competed in since joining the Tiger track & field team in the spring of 2001.

Kate Niehaus is a freshman at Spring Valley High School. Niehaus holds the girls state meet best for cross country in South Carolina.

The Arkansas men and LSU women claimed the team titles at NCAA Division I Indoor Championships hosted by Arkansas.

The Abilene Christian men and St. Augustine's women won the team titles at the 2003 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The Wheaton College women claimed their fifth straight national championship, while the University of Wis.-La Crosse men won their third straight at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University.

Already proving to be one of the best middle distance runners in the country today, Brannen looks to cap off his outstanding season with an NCAA title. A former rommate with Alan Webb, Brannen looks to step out into the spotlight on his own.

On the surface, Georgia Tech freshmen track and field standouts Jessica Graff and Chaunte Howard don't seem to have a lot in common.

Fast times, an outgoing personality, and an unmistakable head of auburn hair make Scottsboro junior distance runner Will McGee one of the best-known and most-recognized track athletes in the state this year.

Williamson senior Arthur Davis dominated the sprint events at the University of Southern Mississippi Invitational on Friday. With times of 11.00, 21.43, 47.54, and 3:24.94, Davis picked up wins in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x400m relay. The 200m time is a PR, moving him into 8th place on the AR All-Time Lists.

Currently ranked 14th on the state all-time 110m hurdle list and 25th in the 300m hurdles, Sewell looks to move up the charts this season while also contributing to his team\'s effort to defend their 6A team title any way he can, whether it be in the 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, the 100m, 200m, or even the javelin.

The state of Virginia expects to be well represented at this weekend\'s Nike Indoor Championships not only in numbers, but as well as in national titles and All-American performances with many hopefuls. In it\'s fifth running, NIC will be held for the third year in a row at the Prince George\'s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. The meet will be run as a two day event with a heavy schedule of competition on both Saturday and Sunday.

A true freshman from Australia, Church is the defending MAC Champion in the high jump and is ranked among the top in the nation. Looking forward to her first NCAA Championship competition, Church hopes to represent Kent State and her country well.

One of the top high jumpers in the country, Beasley looks forward once again to perform at the NCAA Championships. A former multi-eventer as well, Beasley has never been more focused on the event where it placed him above expectations.

The pace was fast and hard, and we put you there with Matt Paulk's interviews with some of the state's finest distance stars from the Bolles Classic. Episcopal alumn and state 5K record holder, Kara Scanlin was also there and said a few word about her first year at Virginia.

The defending MAC Champion in the long and triple jump, Soman now looks to bring home an NCAA title in the long jump for Ball State. Also excelling in the classroom as well, Soman defines what it means to be a true student-athlete.

As one of the top long sprinters in the country, Fortenberry looks to capture his first NCAA title in the 400 meters in only his sophomore season. The All-American looks to help the Gamecocks to a national championship as well.

Randy Curry enters the 2003 outdoor track season as the defending 6A 400m champion both indoors & out, as well as the fastest returning 200m runner in class 6A. If anyone takes the 6A 400m championship away from Randy Curry this season, he\'ll make sure they have to set a state record to do it.

Several athletes in last weekend\'s SEC Championships once competed in the Alabama prep ranks.

He ranks first in the state all-time for the 400m dash, 9th in 200m. He\'s set one 5A state record, won four 5A state championships, one team title, earned All-State seven times and been mentioned in football recruiting magazines without ever donning pads. Not bad for a man just starting his third year of varsity competition.

A former three-time All-American during his freshman year at George Mason, Simms now takes his talents to USC where he holds the best mark in the triple jump. Looking ahead to the outdoor season as well, Simms looks to compete with the best around the world.

At the Group AAA State Meet this past weekend at George Mason University, Thomas Dale senior Alex Tatu won two state titles in two distrinctly different racing styles. After winning the 1600 meter run with a drastic negative split (2:19-2:04) in 4:23, the University of Virginia bound Tatu did not take it as easy in the 1000 meter run as he regained his national lead with a 2:28.45 clocking to earn athlete of the week honors.

The sole freshmen at the Group AAA State Meet to come away with a state title, Bethel\'s Francena McCorory took the win in the 300 meter dash at 39.98 with teammate Britni Spruil (40.80) only a few strides behind in second to earn athlete of the week honors.

Not many people know about him. Not many people know his name. Not many people even know where his school is. Mardy Scales of Middle Tennessee State is looking to change all of that.

The defending Big 12 Champion in the 60 meter hurdles along with the school record is what Nichole Denby brings to the table for Texas. The Longhorn looks forward to even bigger and better things for the outoor season as well.

What does Michael Johnson, Darold Williamson, and Jeremy Wariner all have in common? For starters they all have been trained at some point by the great Clyde Hart at Baylor. They also have performed gold medal performances in the 200 and 400 at a championship meet.

The Eastern Michigan men and Kent State women came away with the team titles at the 2003 MAC Indoor Championships hosted by Kent State.

Form does not always hold true in track and field but certainly did this past Saturday as the Eastern Region put forth a dominating performance at the AAA championships at the GMU Fieldhouse. In a couple of early season meets in December, the CNU Showcase in Newport News and the Metro Run and Walk Invitational in Prince George's MD, teams from the Tidewater area sent an early season message with particularly strong showings.
