Not much of a break for Oxford's Drew Eckman, but he came off an NIC 2nd place in the 400 indoor, to take the first win of the outdoor season in 47.69. Tyree Suber, Glen Mills, rebounded from a tough indoor finale to go 59-07.25 to take the Shot Put. Adam Breisch won the Mile by .01 in 4:21.56 over Lewisburg's Chris Spooner. Bradford hurdler Shawn Colligan took the 300 version in 38.43, while Martin Luther King's Dior Lowry took the 110 Hurdles in a quick 14.66. Junior Steve Hallinan,Cardinal O'Hara, posted a quick 9:23.03 in the 3200. PA's girls' relays continue to excel, with five teams logging nationally elite times in the DMR, led by Hatboro-Horsham in a meet record of 12:21.59. This spring will mark the end of Edra Finley\'s decorated high school track & field career--a career that began with two All-State finishes as a seventh grader and may climax with another team championship, five more golds, and even state records in each event she contests.
In what started off looking to be what has become typical late March track meet invitational weather on an annual basis with dreary, wet, and cold weather actually turned out to be a beautiful day. A wide range of criteria was used to select each respective athlete such as season best, consistency, performance in big meets, etc. To give more athletes recognition, we decided to limit each athlete/relay to only one selection each. Even with that rule, I still shake my head in dismay that I have to leave off a lot of deserving individuals and relays off the team. But that shows that Virginia truly is one of the top track states in the nation with a great depth of talented athletes.

Williams capped off an outstanding freshman season for the Wolfpack by placing in a tie for third in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The former high school national champion is setting the bar even higher this season.
As a multiple All-American in the weight and hammer throws, Dickerson is a strong favorite for the individual title once again this season. Being part of one of the top throwing programs in the country, Dickerson hopes to lead the Gators to a national title.

The 2003 NCAA Indoor Champion in the pole vault nearly broke the collegiate record with his clearance over 19-feet. The senior All-American from Washington looks forward to an even better performance outdoors.
There will be a major change in the air this season which will include adding regional qualifying meets, placing greater emphasis on the conference championships, dramatically increasing the field sizes for the 2003 Division I NCAA Outdoor Championships and pushing the national meet back one week.

Pelham senior Aaron Jones lept six feet in February to place third in the 6A Men's high jump. By finishing in the top three, Jones earned All-State honors for the first time in his career. This spring he'll try to add two more All-State medals to his trophy rack-- in the men's high jump and as a multievent athlete in the AHSAA State Decathlon

The state of Virginia surely made it\'s presence felt at the fifth annual Nike Indoor Championships, held at the Prince George County\'s Sports and Learning Complex. Over the two day contested national meet, seven national titles and dozens of All-American medals were brought home by Virginians.
While a smaller group up Virginians headed even farther north to compete at the New York Armory for the NSIC, the other national indoor championship meet, a talented and competitive group it was.

In it\'s fifth running, NIC will be held for the third year in a row at the Prince George\'s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. The meet will be run as a two day event with a heavy schedule of competition on both Saturday and Sunday.

Randy Curry enters the 2003 outdoor track season as the defending 6A 400m champion both indoors & out, as well as the fastest returning 200m runner in class 6A. If anyone takes the 6A 400m championship away from Randy Curry this season, he\'ll make sure they have to set a state record to do it.
Several athletes in last weekend\'s SEC Championships once competed in the Alabama prep ranks.
He ranks first in the state all-time for the 400m dash, 9th in 200m. He\'s set one 5A state record, won four 5A state championships, one team title, earned All-State seven times and been mentioned in football recruiting magazines without ever donning pads. Not bad for a man just starting his third year of varsity competition.
A former three-time All-American during his freshman year at George Mason, Simms now takes his talents to USC where he holds the best mark in the triple jump. Looking ahead to the outdoor season as well, Simms looks to compete with the best around the world.
At the Group AAA State Meet this past weekend at George Mason University, Thomas Dale senior Alex Tatu won two state titles in two distrinctly different racing styles. After winning the 1600 meter run with a drastic negative split (2:19-2:04) in 4:23, the University of Virginia bound Tatu did not take it as easy in the 1000 meter run as he regained his national lead with a 2:28.45 clocking to earn athlete of the week honors.
The sole freshmen at the Group AAA State Meet to come away with a state title, Bethel\'s Francena McCorory took the win in the 300 meter dash at 39.98 with teammate Britni Spruil (40.80) only a few strides behind in second to earn athlete of the week honors.

Form does not always hold true in track and field but certainly did this past Saturday as the Eastern Region put forth a dominating performance at the AAA championships at the GMU Fieldhouse. In a couple of early season meets in December, the CNU Showcase in Newport News and the Metro Run and Walk Invitational in Prince George's MD, teams from the Tidewater area sent an early season message with particularly strong showings.
