The latest edition of New Balance Outdoor Nationals is in the books with Kentucky seeing our biggest group ever compete with one of our biggest successes ever as well.
Jacob Thomson (Holy Cross) led the group with a second place finish in the 5000 Meter Run as reported on Thursday. He ran a 14:34.78 to set a new best time. (Interview) He came back tonight in the Championship One Mile Run with a 4:12.32 which finished 8th overall. It was a slow paced race from the start with the group opening in 63 seconds. The winner, Jacob Burcham was only a 4:08.80 which tells you a lot about the pace.
The other male championship contender was Tretez Kinnaird (Butler.) Tretez coming in off running a best time of 1:49.31 went out hard and was in second through the 400 with the pace right at 54 seconds. But on the back stretch with 250 to go the field starting moving on him and he was caught up with the big group with no room to move. He fell back to 10th in his heat and 20th overall with a 1:55.60.
Not to forget the girls, the distance crew from Manual combined together in the Distance Medley with a 12:37.56. The foursome of Mary King, Christina Rucinski, Kristen & Cassidy Hale finished 13th overall and 5th in their heat. Ballard's 4x200 was 9th in the Championship with a 1:45.24. The group was senior heavy with seniors Kaysee O'Bannon, Cidnei Johnson, Linesha Clemons, and sophomore Taylor Jones. Sayre's Maddox Patterson in just her third time in the 2000 Meter Steeplechase was 20th overall with a 7:38.92.
