Marcus I Loaded With Storylines
- - -
1. Let's start in the boys field. Aledo's Grayon Morris, who opened the season No. 2 on the preseason MileSplit50, scored his first win at Marcus I, authoring a top time of 15:15.00, which was 17 seconds faster than his best on the course in 2016. Seven boys registered times inside the nation's top 20 marks as well.
2. But this wasn't a one-man race. In fact, the return of Flower Mound, which qualified for NXN last year out of NXR South, was probably the biggest story. The team's top two runners, junior Jarrett Kirk and senior Alex Maier, were third and fifth, respectively. That result opened up a great result for the program, which produced a big win over Southlake Carroll. Flower Mound scored 73 points and held a spread inside 60 seconds. The team's top five were all in through the finish through the top 30 places.

3. In the girls field, it was an impressive race within the lead pack, as four girls all finished with six seconds of each other. Plano Senior's Ashlyn Hillyard, the meet's returning champion, scored her second win with a time of 17:32.00. Keller's Isabel Van Camp was second (17:36.00), Denton Guyer's Brynn Brown was third (17:37.00) and San Antonio FEAST's Emma Heslop was fourth (17:38.00).
4. Yet again, though, Flower Mound's team performance was the story in the team race. Yes, that's right. Annual poweres Keller and Southlake Carroll were nowhere in the picture here. Instead, led by a fifth-place finish by sophomore Natalie Yook (17:47.00), the Flower Mound girls took the Marcus I title with 78 points, putting together a really solid 18:46 average. The squad had its bottom three packed together as they finished 27-28-29.
