Poole Wins and Wilson Places 2nd at Junior Nationals


Cory Poole and Alyssa Wilson, two of New Jersey's biggest stars while in high school, both qualified for the World Junior Championships with sensational performances at Friday's USATF Junior National Championships at the Hayes Track at the Haugh Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. 

Poole, a rising sophomore at the University of Florida wo starred at East Orange High, won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.34 and ran 51.30 to qualify for today's 400 hurdles final. 

Wilson, who competed at Donovan Catholic High and just completed her freshman year at UCLA, finished second in the discus with a throw of 176-8. Wilson, the NJ state record holder in both the shot and discus, will be competing in the hammer throw today and the shot put on Sunday. She's the No. 1 seed in both events.

The top two finishers in each event who meet the qualifying standards qualify for the World Junior Championships, which will be held in Tampere, Finland from July 10-15. Poole and Wilson have met the standard in all their events.

Tennessee's Jordan West, who starred at Rahway High, is the third seed in today's men's shot put.
