The Scoop: Marlee Starliper Turns In Star Performance In Pa. And Much More

South Lakes Sophomore Hannah Waller Wasn't Playing Around

Heading into the VHSL Group 6A Championships, the Western Branch (VA) High girls had the most depth, and arguably the best sprint team assembled at the championships.

But South Lakes sophomore Hannah Waller made sure no one forgot about her.

While Bruins junior Shadajah Ballard was eyeing up three state championships in the 55m, 55mH and 300m, Waller stepped in her path and grabbed wins in the 55m and 300m.

Waller went 6.87 seconds and 38.50, besting Ballard by a hair in each race.

Ballard, though, did go on to win her coveted title in the 55mH in a career best 7.75 seconds.

The Bruins also won the 4x200 in 1:41.92, the 4x400 in 3:58.11 and junior Adriana Shockley won her second straight title in the 500m in 1:13.22.

It was an impressive outing for Waller, who was competing in her first indoor campaign and had yet to win a Virginia indoor or outdoor title. She also gave the Bruins a good deal of motivation heading into the outdoor season -- a name, perhaps, to prepare against.

Ultimately, Western Branch had the last laugh, though.

The Bruins dominated the team championships -- flying high in the sprints -- to a point total of 127 points, with Ballard scoring 36 of those points. Waller's 20 helped South Lakes to second with 56.
