Five Surprises From Nike Cross Nationals

The Strength Of The Southwest

Timpview's Aidan Troutner wasn't the only big finish to come from the Southwest region. Some were surprised when boys side was awarded two at-large teams, but the region proved why they deserved to have four teams there.

The guys from Mountain Vista had a big race to claim a podium spot in third. They were the winners of the Southwest as well. The big surprise came from the Desert Vista boys, who placed eighth with 227 points after finishing fourth in the Southwest.

Springville (UT) High also finished in the top five, scoring 200 points for fifth.

The big turnout for the Southwest region didn't stop there, though, as the girls race was also strong. The Battle Mountain girls made their presence known earning a third-place podium finish in their first ever NXN appearance.

The Mountain Vista and Broomfield girls were also in the top 10, finishing sixth and 10th, respectively. Combined, the Southwest region had six teams in the top 10 and nine individuals in the top 30 (nine boys and one girl).

According to Battle Mountian senior Elizabeth Constien, "You could say we started from the bottom now we're here."
