Schmitt has worked as the squad's lead runner all season, helping the program to big wins at the Roy Griak Invitational, the Naperville Twilight and its second consecutive IHSA Cross Country Class 3A Championship.
It was in the state race at Detweiller Park where Schmitt rattled off the best 3-mile time of her career, going a US No. 19 time of 16:33.0 to finish fourth overall. It came a week prior from her win at the sectional meet in Aurora where she went 17:17.0.
Schmitt's also gone a personal best of 17:49.0 at the 5K distance from September.
On the track, the senior has posted PBs of 4:58.0 in the 1600m and 10:31.74 in the 3200m. She finished third in the 3200m at the state championships in May.
