Colorado Buffaloes Nab Another Stellar Athlete In California's Alex Scales

The early period for national signing day is fast approaching on November 8, and college programs are locking down commitments left and right.

The University of Colorado men's program, though, seems to be having a pretty good month. On Wednesday, the Buffaloes received the commitment of another great talent in California with San Jose Bellarmine (CA) High's Alex Scales, whose range extends from middle distance events on the track to potentially the 8K at the college level.

The early period for all sports will take place from November 8-15 and close again before the regular window opens again in April -- which makes it important to sign, because sometimes the opportunity for athletic scholarship money can close after programs hit their specific allocations.

A few weeks ago, the Buffaloes also landed Flo50 No. 4-ranked Gabe Fendel of Hamilton Southeastern (IN) High.

Scales has the potential to help both the Colorado cross country and track programs. His bread and butter has been the 800m, in which he's clocked a 1:50.64 and the 1600m/1-mile, in which he's added great performances of 4:13.39/4:14.78, though his aerobic capacity extends far beyond that with PBs of 9:06.09/9:13.91 in the 3000m and 3200m. He's run a PB of 15:14.10 in the 5K this cross country season as well.

Scales was also part of the then-national-record-setting DMR with Bellarmine in April, when the team went 10:03.67. He finished 10th in a loaded Brooks PR 800m field this past June. He's also PB'ed a 400m best of 49.78.

The only accolade escaping Scales still, though, has been a state title. He finished second in the 800m at last spring's CIF Championships in 1:51.56, though his opportunity seems to be much greater this year.
