Weekend Rundown: Great Oak Boys Power Past Competition For Win At Mt. SAC

The newest star in Wyoming has won her first state title, and she did it in remarkable fashion.

Rawlins (WY) High freshman Sydney Thorvaldson, ranked No. 12 in the Flo50 national rankings, ran the second-fastest time at the state championships -- according to our database -- by posting a winning effort of 17:49.31 to demolish the field by two minutes

It was her best overall performance of the season in the 5K by two seconds. Just three athletes posted times under 20 minuets on the VA Hospital Grounds course in Sheridan.

Former Jackson Hole (WY) High great Anna Gibson, now competing for Brown University, previously recorded a time of 17:35.20 at the state championships last year.

It was Thorvaldson's ninth straight victory this season and positions herself for a potential bid to a national meet if she chooses to run either an NXN or Foot Locker regional in the next few weeks. She would need to choose between NXN, which holds a Northwest qualifier on Nov. 11 in Boise, Idaho, and Foot Locker, which runs its West qualifier on the same date as NXN on Dec. 2.

Either way, we might not be finished hearing about Thorvaldson this fall.
