Chauncy Smart Transferring to Miami, Makes Switch From Football To Track

One of the nation's top high school sprinters from 2016 is making the jump full-time to track and field.

In doing so, he's moving on to another program.

Auburndale (FL) High graduate Chauncy Smart committed on Sunday to the University of Miami, where he will focus on competing in the 100m, 200m, and sprint relays in the ACC.

Smart, who clocked the No. 11 best 100m wind-legal time this past season nationally, originally signed his letter of intent last year to compete in football and track and field at the University of South Florida, ranked No. 16 in the AP's most recent college football poll.

But after Smart weighed his options in both sports this fall, he decided transfer out of the Bulls' program. The school recently granted Smart his release.

Smart took an official visit to the University of Tennessee over the weekend, but has decided to enroll with Miami this spring and compete for the Hurricanes.

Smart will learn under the guidance of sprints coach Diego Flaquer, who joined Miami's staff in 2016 from Oklahoma State, where he worked previously with Tyreek Hill and John Teeters, both of whom became All-Americans.

Smart has an all-conditions PB in the 100m of 10.26 and a wind-legal mark of 10.40 seconds. He has run a wind-legal mark of 21.79 seconds in the 200m. This past spring, Smart won his first Florida class 3A championship in the 100m, was first at Flo Golden South, third at adidas Boston Boost Games, and second in the 100m at Brooks PR.

Smart has worked previously with renowned coach Gary Evans.
