Kate Murphy held the national junior class record in the 1K for exactly 27 days last year. The then-junior at Lake Braddock High School ran 2:45.36 to open her season at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games last January, No. 2 all-time in the event behind only fellow Virginian Sarah Brown, neé Bowman.
A month later, Sammy Watson would break Murphy's junior class record with her own No. 2 all-time mark of 2:45.32.
Murphy and Watson will face off in the 1K at the VA Showcase next weekend. But first, Murphy will return to the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games for a fast 3K -- where she could possibly challenge Mary Cain's national indoor record of 9:04.51.
