The bad luck for US relays at major international events continued in the Olympic 4x100m prelim. On the second exchange of the 4x100m, Allyson Felix and English Gardner were unable to complete the handoff. Gardner went back, picked up the baton, and the USA team jogged home in last place.
Upon further review, Felix stumbled into the exchange after what looks like the Brazil second leg impeded her progress. The USA team should file an official protest.
After the race in the mixed zone Allyson Felix said that she was bumped and USA will appeal.
Team USA line up was: Tianna Bartoletta->Allyson Felix->English Gardner->Morolake Akinosun
UPDATE: At 6:00pm EST, Team USA women will get a chance to hit the track and run a 4x100m time trial to qualify for the 4x100m final on time.
The time to beat will be 42.70. Both China and Canada ran identical 42.70 times in the prelims, but China's time was 1/1000s of a second slower. If USA qualifies on time, China will be bumped out of the final. China has filed a protest of the decision to allow the Americans to run again.
*UPDATE: The US team ran solo out of lane 2 and the team definitely played the exchanges safe. Not only did they get the stick around smoothly this time, but they ended up with the fastest qualifying time going into the final with a 41.77*
