South Carolina USATF Association Seals Spot for Meet

South Carolina USA Track and Field Youth Chair Valerie Beesley announced on Friday that University of South Carolina Columbia is allowing the use of Weems Baskin Track and Field complex for the 2004 South Carolina USATF Junior Olympic State Track and Field Championships.

The University of South Carolina confirmed to Beesley that the organization is allowed to use the university's track from June 11-13 for the South Carolina Junior Olympic meet. Beesley also announced the Junior Olympic Regional Meet is taking place at Weems Baskin Track from July 8-11.

The top five athletes from each association meet move on to the regional meet. In the case that the one of the top five athletes does not declare within one hour from the posting of results the sixth finisher has the chance to declare. The 2003 association meet was held at Clemson University's Rock Norman Track Complex and consisted of 500 competitors.

The USATF is comprised of 57 associations that cover the full geographic territory of the United States (usatf.org). Seven regions (East, Southeast, Midwest, Mid-America, Southwest, West, and Northwest) make up the USATF.

Potomac Valley (MD) was the 2003 regional host. The regional meet in July consists of the Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia associations. According to Beesley there can be up to 3,000 athletes at regionals. The top three per event at regionals move on to nationals. To go on to nationals you must be in the top three, no bumping is allowed.

In order to compete in the regional meet each athlete must be a member of the USATF. Athletes can become members online. A list of numerous USATF youth teams is available on the South Carolina association website. Entry forms and meet schedules will be posted on the associations page prior to the event. Meet entries do have deadlines and meet day entries is currently unavailable.

Each athlete must compete at the association level to move up to the regional level and beyond. In the past special grants have been given to athletes (to skip the association level) that are on the Junior USA Team.

"We have one of the strongest regions in the nation and have the top turnout of athletes at nationals every year," said Beesley. "We (usually) have athletes in the top eight (podium level) in each event."

The 2004 USATF Junior Olympic National Meet is scheduled from July 27-Aug. 1 in Eugene, Oregon on the campus of University of Oregon-Hayward Field.
