Road to NBNI: Girls' Relay Events

Who are the best RI athletes that will be competing at the New Balance Nationals Indoor (NBNI) Championships, March 11-13? Leading up to the nationals at the New Balance Armory in New York City, MileSplit RI will feature what we consider the top athletes from the Ocean State in their respective events.

Last year at the Nationals, La Salle Academy swept the 4xMile Relay. By the looks of it, it could happen again this weekend. With the foursome of Eliza Rego, Karina Tavares, Emily Kane and Grace Connolly, the Lady Rams have, in order, a 4:52 miler, two capable of a time in the low five-minute range and another that can run between 5:10-5:15. That computes to a time close to 20 minutes, which only Saratoga Springs (NY) can match. It should be a neck-and-neck battle between these two powerhouses. In the DMR, look for Cumberland to contend with the front-runners in the unseeded section of the event. The Clippers bring a strong quartet of Julia Dempsey, Meaghan Scullin, Colleen Enestvdet and Amy Laverty. Hope, a state runner-up in the 4x400m relay, has potential for a low four-minute clocking in the Emerging Elite race. With May Stern as its anchor, Classical should do well in the EE 4x200m race.
