Jenny Simpson's hopes for a third straight IAAF World Championships medal in the 1500m ended in heartbreak this morning, as the U.S. champion's shoe fell off about midway through the race. She ran 4:16.28 to place 11th, while teammate Shannon Rowbury was the top American finisher with 4:12.39 for seventh.

So, what happened? Scroll through the slideshow to see the photo sequence of the lost shoe as 1500m World Record holder Genzebe Dibaba cuts in front of the pack and defending champion Abeba Aregawi of Sweden makes contact with Simpson's foot.
