Friday Quick Highlights from Penn Relays:

  • Boys 4x800 Qualifying Heats - Nordhoff (CA) boys in heat 2 of the small schools were the fastest qualifiers in 7:52.12 featuring the fastest leg of the 4 heats in Cameron Kunde (1:53.08). Large school heat winners Arlington (NY) in 7:54.33 and Pennsbury (PA) in 7:54.98 were the next fastest with the next 2 fastest individual splits in James Asselmeyer (1:53.08) for Arlington and Alek Sauer (1:54.17) for Pennsbury.
  • Boys 4x100 Qualifying Heats - Kingston College (JAM) runs fastest time overall (41.12) with TC Williams (VA) running the fastest time (41.71) from an American school. Along with TC Williams, DeMatha Catholic (VA) and St. John's College (DC) will rep the USA in the COA Final tomorrow.
  • Championship of America Girls 4x800 Finals - The two Jamaican teams, Holmwood Teach & Vere Tech took the lead from the gun and it looked like they would go 1-2 but Amanda Thomas of Western Branch, VA dropped the fastest split (2:07.83) to reel in Vere Tech and get 2nd. Holmwood Tech held on for the win in 9:01.31.
  • Small Schools Girls 4x100 Finals - Brandee Johnson unleashed a kick that put all the other anchors at a stand still as she led her Nansemond River (VA) team to a 47.72 victory.
  • Large Schools Girls 4x100 Finals - Cheltenham, the Pennsylvania powerhouse, put up a strong fight, but the home field advantage didn't put the Panthers atop the podium as they fell short to St. Catherine's (JAM) flying 46.89.
  • Championship of America Girls 4x100 Finals - A bittersweet run for Long Beach Poly (CA) as they are the top American team in this event yet again, but are taken down by four Jamaican squads with Edwin Allen winning in 45.40.
  • Championship of America Girls 4x400 Finals - A quartet of four Jamaican teams separate themselves early. Edwin Allen (JAM) holds on for the win in 3:40.41 as Brandee Johnson of Nansemond River (VA) makes a late charge to sneak in for 3rd place (3:43.03).
  • Boys Distance Medley - Similarly to the 4xMile at NB Nationals Indoor, backed by his first three legs, Jake Salisbury of La Salle Academy (RI) timed his kick swimmingly as he outkicked McDonogh (MD), CBA (NJ), Fordham Prep (NJ), and Lake Braddock (VA) winning in 10:12.10.
  • Boys Mile Run - Drew Hunter (VA) becomes joins Matthew Centrowitz as the only pair to win the 3k at Penn Relays then come back a year later and win the COA Mile at Franklin Field. Hunter had a blazing kick taking the win by nearly 2.5 seconds in 4:07.15.
  • Boys 3K Run - With the reigning champ Drew Hunter in the Mile, the door was wide open for multiple All-American Alex Ostberg to find the finish line first. That is exactly what Ostberg did. Similarly to Hunter, the Darien, CT native had a fiendish kick over the last 200m and won in 8:23.95.
  • Boys Discus -Trevor Detillion (OH) wins with a US #2 launch of 203-6.5 and David Lucas (PA) throws a US #3 199-7.75
  • Boys Javelin - Denzel Pratt of St. Augustine's College (Bahamas) wins with a throw of 208-8.25, Michael Biddle (PA) gets 2nd with a US #8 200-1.25
  • Boys Shot Put - Jordan Geist (PA) wins with a US #3 67-1
