Knights highlight Day 1 of NBNI

It was a quiet day for Rhode Island athletes at the New Balance Nationals on Friday, but it certainly didn't go without some great efforts.

The most impressive performance of the day was turned in by Central High in the Emerging Elite 4x400-meter relay. Spurred by a sub 49-second anchor from sophomore Donatien Djero, the Knights placed fifth overall with a time of 3 minutes, 25.02 seconds, less than a second from the winning time posted by Thomas Jefferson (N.Y.).

Donatien, the state's 55m and 300m champion, was timed in 48.57. The remainder of the squad with their splits was sophomore Austin Walo (51.3), sophomore Dametrius O'Connor (51.97) and senior Lemar McFadden (53.18).

In the boys' EE weight throw, Woonsocket had two of its athletes place among the top six. Sophomore Jared Briere was third overall with a toss of 61 feet, 2 inches and classmate Dylan Cote placed sixth with a distance of 56-1.

Narragansett senior Carly Timpson was fourth in the girls' EE weight throw with a 47-9 effort. The reigning high-jump titlist didn't fare quite as well in her specialty with a leap of 5-2.5.

Cumberland finished 23rd overall in the Championship distance medley relay with a time of 12:33.75. The quartet consisted of senior Nichole Barger (1,200m, 3:47.2), junior Meaghan Scullin (400m, 1:00.05), sophomore Julia Dempsey (800m, 2:30.32) and junior Amy Laverty (1,600m, 5:14.66).

North Kingstown junior Bethany Nunnery was 20th in the EE two mile with a time of 11:18.44.
