World Record holder Kaylin Whitney ends high school career

Kaylin Whitney, the Youth World record holder for 100m and 200m, will opt out of high school competition this spring to focus on training for the 2016 Olympic Games, according to Buddy Collings of the Orlando Sentinel.

The East Ridge junior will continue to train with Dennis Mitchell's Star Athletics club in Lake County, Florida. Mitchell, a three-time Olympic medalist, coaches the group of elite athletes that includes Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin.

Whitney's premature departure from the high school track circuit caps a career that includes two Class 3A State Championships (100m, 200m in 2013) and two Class 4A State Championships (100m, 200m in 2014).

She ran 11.10 for 100m and 22.49 for 200m to break the World U-18 Records for both events at the USA Track & Field Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon last July. At the time of her run, she ranked No. 8 in the world regardless of age for 200m, No. 17 for 100m.

At the World Junior Championships, Whitney won gold in the 200m and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay. She took bronze in the 100m.

More details coming soon.
