The last weekend of high school track & field meets for 2013 across the country. A busy stretch of days at the Armory with major meets on Thursday (North Shore Invite), Friday (Marine Corps Holiday Classic), and Saturday (Colgate Women's Games) following Christmas day.  The Reggie Lewis Center in Boston has two major invites as well this weekend (MSTCA Holiday Qualiifer & Boston Holiday Challenge). Prince George's Sports & Learning Center in Maryland has another mega meet scheduled for Saturday with the F.I.T. Invite.

Marine Corps Holiday Classic (NY)

December 27, 2013 The Armory Track & Field Center in New York, NY

Boys Highlights

  • With all four legs under 50 seconds, Union Catholic (NJ) wins the boys 4x400 meter relay in a new US #1 of 3:17.87! The quartet is knocking on the door of becoming a US top 20 all-time indoor relay in the event with the current cut-off at 20th best all-time being 3:17.06.
  • With a 4:15 split for 1600 meter anchor leg Sean Kelly (which would be a nation's best if an open race), Chaminade boys (NY) were able to run away with the DMR victory in easily the US #1 time in the event at 10:15.87.
  • The Union Catholic boys (NJ) are the first 4x200 relay to dip under 1:30 this indoor season nationally as they rolled to improve their US #1 time down to 1:29.69 in the prelims. They showed they had another gear for the finals as the reigning nationals champs finished 2013 with a bang in 1:28.71!
  • After winning the Bishop Loughlin Games 600 last weekend in 1:19.20, Richard Rose of the Boys & Girls (NY) ran another US #1 performance with a 1:55.08 win in the invitational 800 meter race. 
  • The Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) boys, coming off a very strong cross country season, went to work on the track running a US #2 time of 8:08 to win the 4x800 meter relay following a 3rd place finish in the DMR earlier in the meet.
  • In the rarely contested steeplechase indoors (at the mile distance), Jeremy Miekley of Miller Place (NY) is able to run a 4:44 mile with barriers in front of him.

Girls Highlights

  • Garden City (NY) junior Emma Gallagher won the Marine Corps 800 for the second straight year with a US #1 time of 2:13.61. She had tuned up for the race yesterday in winning the 300 at the North Shore Invite, also held at the Armory.
  • Warwick Valley girls (NY) anchored by state champion Megan Reilly won the DMR by a big margin of 20 seconds with their US #1 time of 12:24.33.
  • In the finals of the girls 4x200, Philly area school Cheltenham (PA) defeated the NY/NJ relays for a US #2 time of 1:42.26.
  • The Strath Haven girls from PA lowered their season best time by 8 seconds with a US #2 performance in the 4x800 meter relay at 9:31. 
  • The quickest qualifiers from the 4x200 prelims went to the Union girls at 1:44.46 (US #9) with similar named schools Uniondale (1:45.36) and Union Catholic (1:45.55) as the next fastest qualifiers from the finals after all 3 schools won their qualifying heats.
  • Kalleigh Forrester of Newburgh Free Academy (NY) was able to gruel out a victory in the girls steeplechase mile with a winning time of 5:43.

Tight finish in battle for boys' ticket to Milrose Mile!

 

Boys Highlights

  • Smithtown West's Ben Bonhurst (NY) improved his national lead in the shot put with a US #1 mark of 64'1"! After throwing over 62 feet in his first two meets of the season and previous personal best of 63'8" last week, Bonhurst continued his season progression into Thursday at the Armory.
  • Bronxville's John Flannery wins by a nose over Eastport-South Manor's Tom Meehan in the Millrose Mile qualifier with both runners timed at 4:21, which should put Flannery at US #1 and Meehan at US #2 currently.
  • Todd Uckermark of Warwick Valley (NY) backed up his recent US#1 16-2 in the pole vault with a 16-0 clearance on Thursday night at the Armory.
  • The Warwick Valley boys established a new meet record in the 4x200 meter relay with a US#9 performance of 1:32.50.

 

Girls Highlights

  • Denise Branch of Benjamin Cardozo (NY) followed up her 5:03 win last weekend in the mile at the Bishop Loughlin Games with a two second improvement and another victory to qualify for the Millrose Mile in a US #2 time of 5:01.04 on Thursday afternoon in NYC.
  • US#6 Long Jump from Valley Stream North SR Anointing Onuoha 18-04.75.
  • Half Hollow Hills West SR Oyin Adewale US#8 Shot Put  41-08.25.
  • Garden City sophomore Emma Gallagher (NY) broke the meet record in the 300 meter dash with a 40.3 clocking. Gallagher has great range in the middle events as she has run sub 2:10 in the 800 and as fast as 2:53 in the 1000.
  • With a late kick, Alex Osman of North Shore (NY) won for the host school in the 3K with a winning time of 10:39, which puts her just ouside of the top 10 nationally in the event.
  • Connecticut middle distance runner Katie Foley from Trumbull High School posted a winning time of 1:40.8 in the girls 600.

 

 


Rhode Island Classic (RI)

  • Glastonbury (Conn.) sophomore Randy Neish won mile run in 4:21.87, tied for No. 5 nationally. Port Jefferson (NY) junior James Burke, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, placed second at 4:22.1.
  • Mount Vernon (NY) won 1600 sprint medley in 3:39.51, No. 2 nationally.
  • Barrington High (RI) set a meet record of 192-11 in the weight throw relay. (Adam Kelly 74-4.75, Bobby Colantonio 64-6.75, Mike Alvarnez 53-11.5). Kelly is the No. 1 ranked weight thrower in the country at 75-5.
  • Bay Shore (NY) senior Omari Buckmire, last year’s MVP for the field events, captured the long jump at 21-2.75 and the triple jump at 46-7.5, a distance that’s just short of his sixth-ranked 47-2 at the Bishop Loughlin Games on Dec. 21.
  • La Salle Academy (RI) freshman DJ Principe won freshmen mile in 4:34.88, fastest time nationally by a ninth-grader this season

Girls Highlights

  • Colonie (NY) girls captured the DMR with the third fastest time in meet history of 12:40.19 (US #1), Shaker (NY) US#2 12:40.56 (US #2) and La Salle (RI)  12:44.56 (US #4)
  • Lake Region (ME) junior Kate Hall improved upon her US #1 and Maine state record in the long jump with a leap of 19'11"! She continued her historic tear this winter in winning the 55 meter dash in another Maine state record and US #2 performance of 7.01!
  • Maddy Berkson of Classical High School gives us our first sub 5 minute girls mile of the season with a US #1 performance of 4:59.07. 
  • New Rochelle senior Ashley Wiggins (NY) steamrolled through the hurdles to a US #3 clocking of 8.15 in the 55 meter hurdles
  • Leah Triller of Holy Names posted a US top 5 time in the 800 meter run with her 2:15.23 victory.
  • Quashira McIntosh of Hope HIgh School ran one of the faster girls 300 times in the Northeast this season with a 40.73 clocking.

  • Forest Park's Mustaqeem Williams storms down the track in the 55 dash finals to a US #1 clocking of 6.34! Darryl Haraway of DeMatha Catholic was 2nd in the 55 finals at 6.50.
  • US #7 winning time by Kordell Williams of DeMatha Catholic (MD) in boys 55H finals. Moses Kennedy (McKinley Tech) 2nd at 7.80.
  • James Robinson's Nathan Schulte & Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett (VA) dueled it out in bell lap of boys 1000 with Schulte as the 2:33.73 winner and Corbett as the 2:34 runner-up.
  • Schulte ran a strong anchor leg to bring the James Robinson boys back from behind several places for the win in 4x800 in a time of 8:20.98. Forest Park boys were 2nd at 8:23 and Lake Braddock boys were 3rd at 8:24.

Girls Highlights

  • Javonne Antoine (Elizabeth Seton MD) broke a long-standing meet record by an inch with 39'8.50" TJ (US #2)
  • James Robinson (VA) senior Macey Schweikert wins girls 1000 in US #3 2:57.15. 
  • 3 girls under 11 in girls 3200 with Lake Braddock's Hannah Christen winning in a meet record time of 10:52 followed by Hereford (MD) freshmen Kelly Wesolowski in a 10:56 PR for second and Lake Braddock teammate Katy Kunc at 10:57 for third place to break 11 for the first time.
  • US #6 leap by Taylor Woods of Riverdale Baptist (MD) in the girls long jump with a mark of 18'5.50".
  • Battlefield girls win 4x800 in a VA state best time of 9:38.83 (US #4) at FIT Invite with a 2:16 anchor leg from Ellie Grove (31-1:04-1:40-2:16), who was coming back from traveling up to compete at the New York Armory yesterday in the Marine Corps Holiday Classic. The James Robinson Robinson girls were second at 9:53 with a 2:17 3rd leg from Macey Schweikert. 
  • North Point's Valencia MacDowell wins the girls 500 in US #8 1:17.80. Followed by James W. Robinson's Kacey Wheeler in 2nd at 1:18.38
  • South County's Morgan Knight improves upon her prelim time (8.48) in 55H with 8.38 clocking in finals for win. Season best by .01 for her.

  • Lundy Spinner of Shenendehowa (NY) launched a US#8 mark of 44'1.75" in the weight throw.
  • Hopkinton wins the girls 4x800 with a US#6 time of 9:48.29.
  • Karina Shepard from Dracut wins the girls one mile run with a time of 5:07.68.
  • Amy Piccolo from Ursuline takes first in the girls 1000meter run with a time of 3:00.35.
  • Amanda Henson from Barnstable takes first in the 55meter dash with a time of 7.24.
  • Ellen DiPietro from Marshfield takes first in the girls 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.66.
  • Michaela Smith from Newton North wins the girls shot put with a throw of 40-01.50.

Robert Burdette Indoor Classic (PA)

Boys Highlights

  • J'Von Jennings, out of Downington East High School in Exton (PA), claimed first in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with a US #2 time of 8.18. Donaldo Benjamin of Delaware Valley Charter ran 8.20 in the prelim, to finish the day at US#3.
  • Upper Moreland junior Tyler Whitmore (PA) rolled to a US #5 time and PA #1 clocking of 22.40 in the 200 meter dash. Another top 10 time was posted by Whitmore in his second victory of the day with a US #9 6.99 win in the 60 meter dash finals.
  • Cheltenham boys closed out the meet with a US #5 clocking in the 4x400 meter relay winning from the second fastest section in 3:26.20.
  • Only a sophomore, Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East was able to get under 9 minutes in his 3K victory with a US #8 performance of 8:58.64.
  • Upper Darby's Cecil SImpson nearly jumped himself into a US top 10 ranking and now is the PA state leader in the triple jump with a winning mark of 46'3" (US #11).
  • Eric Jones, a junior at Neumann Goretti, ran a Pennsylvania state leading time and US #13 clocking of 50.83 in the 400 meter dash.
  • Tra-C Davis of Coatesville cleared the bar at 6'6" in the high jump, a US #6 performance in the vertical jumping event.
  • Malvern Prep's Jaxon Hoey took the boys mile race in a PA #1 time of 4:26.81, which also ranks US #17.
  • Council Rock South boys were able to run under 11 minutes in the DMR with a US #15 10:56.04 finish time.
  • Donaldo Benjamin (Del Val Charter) clocked a US #3 time of 8.20 in the 60 meter hurdles prelims.
  • Springside Chestnutt Hill boys clocked a US #5 and PA #1 time of 3:42.83 in the sprint medley relay.

Girls Highlights

  • Markeeta Thomas of Paul Robeson continued her surge up the top of the national 60 meter hurdle rankings. The junior cruised to victory in the event, improving on her state leading mark and moving up to US#2 with her time of 8.86.
  • US #8 performance came in the girls 400 meter dash from Hanna Brosky of Emmaus High School in a time of 58.12.
  • Lauren Channer (East Stroudsburg Area South PA) dipped under 8 seconds for the first time in the 60 meter dash with a 7.85 finals victory (US #18). She later doubled back to win the 200 meter dash as well in 26.51 (US #25).
  • The Upper Darby girls ran a PA state leading time of 1:46.28 in the 4x200, which ranks US #18 in the relay event.
  • Neumann Goretti girls wrapped up the meet with a PA #2 and US #22 time of 4:07.00 in the 4x400 meter relay.
  • Quadisha Newkirk from Robeson High School leaped to a US #22 mark of 36'6" in the triple jump.
  • Macey Tanesco of Prkiomen Valley flirted with a 40 foot throw in shot put with a 39'9.75" mark (US #24).

  • Arlington senior Trentan Beram (NY) rolled in the 300 yard dash with a 31.9 clocking, which converts to a 35.68 for 300 meters.
  • Cornwall's Jill Decker (NY) wins the girls 600 yard dash in a time of 1:29 high, which converts to a 600 meter dash roughly around 1:40.

Passarelli Invitational (NJ)

Boys Highlights

  • Columbia's Josuah Nijman (NJ) launced a big personal best throw of 59'11.75", which now moves him to a US #3 in the shot put event.
  • Christian Kilda-Brandt of Mendham (NJ) broke an 8 year old meet record in the 600 meter dash with a US #9 performance of 1:23.11, which is also best in the state of New Jersey this season.
  • Morristown senior Sean Lyons won the 3200 meter run going away with a time that places him just outside of the top 10 in the United States with a 9:33.63 clocking (US #12).

Girls Highlights

  • Marlena Paz (West Morris Central NJ) established a new meet record in the girls pole vault with a  US #11 clearance of 11'4".
  • Mackenzie Barry, a senior at Mendham High School (NJ) ran a state leading time for New Jersey and US #4 time for 3200 meters in her 10:52.96 victory.
  • Two US top 10 times were produced in the girls 600 between race winner Emily Cowan of Columbia at a US #6 time of 1:37.27 and race runner-up Jennifer Edobi of Union High School at a US #9 time of 1:37.66. Cowan had also won the 300 earlier in the meet over Edobi in a time of 41.46.
  • Breisha Morton of Passaic County (NJ) is now tied with many others on the East Coast with a US #2 season best height of 5'6" in the high jump.
