Although they competed in separated races at the Reebok Manhattan Invitational, state powerhouses Bishop Hendricken and La Salle Academy nearly had identical team performances Saturday afternoon at New York’s famed Van Cortlandt Park.

Hendricken senior Colin Tierney led his teammates to a 74-114 win over St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) in the Varsity E  race by capturing individual honors with a time of 12 minutes, 38 seconds for the demanding 2.5-mile layout. Junior Michael Potter was fourth for the Hawks with a time of 12:52.3. Junior Grant Gauthier (22nd, 13:28.3), sophomore Avery Ingegneri (23rd, 13:29.1) and senior Collin Manning (24th, 13:29.8) completed the scoring for Hendricken, who collectively averaged a time of 13:11.5.

That time was just a half a second slower (13:10.94) than the average clocking posted by a La Salle squad that was sixth overall in the elite Eastern States Championship. Sophomore Jack Salisbury was the top finisher for the Rams, taking 25th overall at 12:54.6. West Chester (Penn.) senior Tony Russell won the race with a time of 12:20. Continuing his strong season, La Salle freshman D.J. Principe also cracked 13 minutes on the hilly terrain, running 12:58.7 to place 32nd overall. Junior Jake Grundy was 43rd at 13:09., junior Dave Paiva placed 52nd in 13:21.8 and junior Christopher Notarianni was 68th with a time of 13:30.4. Christian Brothers Academy (N.Y.) copped the team plaque with 90 points, while La Salle collected 220 for its placement.

The girls’ race of the Eastern States Championship featured a fourth-place finish by La Salle sophomore Eliza Rego, who was timed in 14:27.4. Classical senior Maddy Berkson was next for R.I., placing 11th at 14:54.8. As a team, La Salle was sixth with 209 points. Unionville (N.Y.) took the plaque with 89 points.

Rounding out the scorers for La Salle were sophomore Katrina Tavares (20th, 15:10.6), sophomore Elise Papazian (64th, 16:11.7), senior Caroline Falvey (69th, 16:14.1) and sophomore Audrey O’Neill (72nd, 16:17.8).
