NB Nationals: Green, Davis-White, Ways Grab Indoor Titles

Davis-White Bounces Back for Victory

A chorus of boos rang down on officials at The Armory during the 60 meter semi-finals. Race favorite Kali Davis-White of Boys Anderson was waved off the track with an apparent false start disqualification. Only problem was even with all eyes on her lane, most in the crowd and media with cameras focused in did not see her move! And they let their displeasure be known.

Davis-White, now a seasoned veteran of these big national meets, did not let the DQ in the 60 phase her. She still had work to be done. The 200 meter championship finals were that afternoon.

As the race started with Kali in the outside lane six, junior Ariana Washington quickly made up the stagger just one lane to her left. The California outdoor 100 and 200 state champion took the lead early. She seem to extend it around the midway point and looked strong holding on to it around the final curve and into the home stretch. The race looked like it was all hers. But Davis-White refused to surrender! The Floridian overtook her within the last five meters of the race to win in a meet record and all-time high school indoor #7 time of 23.48 to Washington's 23.50.

Ways Beats Out National Favorite, Wins 200m Title

The announcer at the meet didn't seem to know what we already do: that Ceolamar Ways can run with anybody in the country. So sitting out there in the outside lane 6, Ways hid. And while the announcer was focused on Michael Cherry in lane five or Laray Smith in lane four (national leader), Ways was hitting his stride from the gun.

The Nease senior, who has committed to UNC-Chapel Hill, held off their advances and no one ever closed on his stagger as they rounded the 200 meter banked track. Over the final steps Cherry began to close in, but Ways held strong and with a lean maintained his NB Indoor national title in a US #2 21.37.

Ceolamar had this to say: "The race was very good, I was satisfied with my performance overall. The weekend was great, it was awesome seeing friends I met in Seattle and also making a lot of new friends. It was a great experience and I hope I have many more like it. It feels good to be a National Champion, but I just want to make sure I stay hungry and keep working hard. This gives me a lot of momentum for the rest of the season, I know where I stand and I just need to keep trusting In my training and running to the best of my abilities."

Jeremiah Green was already the national leader in the triple jump, after his performance in January at Jimmy Carnes that still stands as #1. And now he has extended that lead and added a national indoor title to his resume.

The Hillsborough High School senior jumped 51-6.5 to outdistance the rest of the field by almost two feet.
